Indian Railways to issue NFT train tickets for world’s largest religious festival

Policy & Regulation·January 14, 2025, 6:20 AM

Indian Railways (IR), the state-owned manager of India’s railway network, plans to issue non-fungible token (NFT)-based train tickets to transport pilgrims to Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious festival.

The Hindu festival is of particular significance given that it only occurs once every 144 years.

ChainCode Consulting partnership

According to a report published by Indian news outlet Pune.news on Jan. 13, IR has collaborated with ChainCode Consulting, a Bangalore-headquartered enterprise blockchain development and consulting firm, to provide the digital tickets.

The Polygon blockchain has been chosen as the network upon which the NFT tickets will be minted. The tickets will then be made available to end users via NFTtrace, a real-world assets (RWA) tokenization and traceability platform run by ChainCode Consulting.

Long-running collaboration

Service users and railway personnel will be free to check the validity of tickets on the public blockchain.

This announcement is just the latest installment of a long-running collaboration between ChainCode Consulting and IR. In March 2024, a similar project was pursued by both parties. On that occasion, the collaboration involved the release of a series of NFT tickets for use on a train line running from Lucknow, the capital of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, to the Indian capital, New Delhi.

In that instance, NFTs were minted on the Hyperledger blockchain. A previous collaboration, earlier in 2024, saw NFTs minted on Polygon for digital tickets covering journeys to the sacred Hindu city of Ayodhya.

Commenting on the choice of Polygon relative to this latest collaboration, Alok Gupta, CEO of ChainCode Consulting, stated:

“By partnering with IRCTC and leveraging the Polygon blockchain, we are enabling a digital-first experience that complements the spiritual and traditional significance of the Mahakumbh while introducing a new level of engagement through NFTs.”

Polygon is an Ethereum ecosystem scaling network. With that, it has fast throughput and low gas fees and it's on this basis that it’s understood that Polygon was chosen in this instance. Aishwary Gupta, global head of payment and fintech at Polygon Labs, the key developer behind the Polygon blockchain, told Cointelegraph that public blockchains are playing an important role in doing away with middlemen and intermediaries.

The Polygon Labs executive stated that at both state and central government levels in India, Polygon has been used on a number of projects. He added:

”With its low cost and high throughput, we are sure that the NFTs being issued around Maha Kumbh Mela would be yet another great success.”

$94 billion market opportunity

Ticketing remains one of the proposed use cases for blockchain technology that has the potential to gain traction. That potential hasn’t gone unnoticed by ticketing industry leader Ticketmaster. In 2023 the company rolled out token-gated ticket sales. The feature enables artists to reward fans who hold NFTs with access to exclusive pre-sale events, prime concert seating and many other incentives and rewards.

NFT technology offers a solution to a number of issues experienced within the events industry, including ticket scalping, fake tickets and security issues. The live events business is a $94 billion industry, underscoring the opportunity available to be exploited by innovative NFT-based ticketing startups.

Metaplanet issues more bonds to buy Bitcoin & opens U.S. subsidiary

Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has opened a U.S. subsidiary company in Florida while also issuing 3.6 billion Japanese yen ($24.7 million) in bonds for the purpose of buying more Bitcoin.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashAccelerating the Bitcoin strategyIn an announcement on May 1, the company outlined that it had established Metaplanet Treasury Corporation in Miami, Florida. The firm cited the purpose of the subsidiary as a means through which it can accelerate its overriding strategy of accumulating more Bitcoin. Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich commented on X on the rationale behind locating the U.S. subsidiary in Florida, stating:”The reason for choosing Florida is clear: the state is rapidly emerging as a global hub for Bitcoin innovation, corporate adoption and financial liberalization.” Gerovich added that the newly formed company will enhance Metaplanet’s “around-the-clock operational capabilities across time zones.” The Metaplanet CEO sees the development as part of the firm’s evolution as a global Bitcoin treasury company.  $250 million capital raiseThe company stated that it had already established a corporate entity in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), with the U.S. addition enhancing the company’s ability “to respond to market dynamics with speed and precision.”  Metaplanet intends to raise $250 million in funding through the Miami-based entity, having launched it with initial capital of $10 million. It’s envisaged that the U.S. subsidiary can act as a vehicle to attract institutional investment.  Back in March it was reported that Metaplanet was investigating the idea of listing its stock in the U.S. At the time, Gerovich stated that the firm was “considering the best way to make Metaplanet shares more accessible to investors around the world.” As part of that process, Gerovich met with officials from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq.  In further U.S.-related developments, the company appointed Eric Trump, second son of U.S. President Donald Trump, to its strategic board of advisors in March. Last week, Metaplanet appointed David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, to its strategic board of advisors. Bond issuanceIn a separate development, Metaplanet has issued 3.6 billion Japanese yen ($24.7 million) in 0% ordinary bonds to purchase additional Bitcoin. The company used its EVO FUND as the mechanism through which it issued the bonds.  It has set out a goal of accumulating 10,000 BTC by the end of the year. Currently, the company holds 5,000 BTC. One community member believes that Metaplanet could hit this target as early as July on the basis of ongoing share dilution.Appearing on The Bitcoin Treasuries Podcast earlier this year, Metaplanet’s Director of Bitcoin Strategy, Dylan LeClair, described how prior to adopting its Bitcoin treasury strategy in 2024, the firm was a “zombie” on the Tokyo stock exchange with the pandemic having had a negative impact on the company’s fortunes.  He outlined that the company consolidated and dealt with some debt issues, but at that point it lacked a clear strategy. It then set out to replicate the success of U.S. Bitcoin treasury pioneer, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy). On May 1 Gerovich posted on X that the company had achieved unrealized gains on Bitcoin exceeding six billion yen ($41.68 million).

GRVT Debuts zkSync’s Inaugural ‘Hyperchain’

GRVT Debuts zkSync’s Inaugural ‘Hyperchain’GRVT, the hybrid crypto exchange incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, is all set to debut as zkSync’s inaugural “hyperchain,” marking a significant milestone in the zkSync ecosystem’s evolution.zkSync represents Ethereum’s second layer solution offering cheaper and faster transactions.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashCombining CEX and DEX qualitiesPronounced “gravity,” GRVT is an innovative platform that attempts to seamlessly blend the advantages of centralized and decentralized exchanges. It promises users a Robinhood-like experience while integrating self-custodial features akin to Uniswap-style exchanges. Matter Labs, the developer brains behind zkSync, shared news of GRVT's imminent project milestone in an interview with The Block. The introduction of GRVT as the first Hyperchain within the zkSync ecosystem has broadened the horizons of potential applications for this technology, according to Matter Labs. The project stated:“There is nothing like GRVT being built, not in the zkSync ecosystem nor outside of it. By being able to design and deploy custom hyperchains connected through hyperbridges, teams like GRVT’s can build entirely new use cases.”The ability to design and deploy custom hyperchains connected via hyperbridges opens the door to entirely new use cases, affording projects like GRVT the freedom to explore innovative possibilities.A layer 3 ValidiumGRVT will play a role as a Layer 3 Validium within the zkSync ecosystem. Validiums are Ethereum scaling networks that bear similarities to zk-rollups found in Layer 2 solutions. The critical differentiator is in how they handle data. Zk-rollups maintain data on-chain, whereas Validiums securely store it off-chain. This approach enhances user security by safeguarding against front-running and market manipulation.GRVT’s alpha version is set to make its debut next month, followed by the mainnet release in the first quarter of the upcoming year. Promising a transaction speed of up to 600,000 trades per second and less than two milliseconds of latency, GRVT leverages zkSync’s “horizontally scaling” infrastructure to deliver enhanced performance.Explaining the concept of horizontally scaling, Hong Yea, GRVT’s co-founder and CEO, told The Block:“Horizontally scaling means to deploy additional underlying pairs as new hyperchains. Say BTC/USDT perpetual futures is one hyperchain and so on. And we can look to add other infrastructure components like this as new hyperchains to scale throughout, as they can interoperate. This allows high-frequency traders to trade more efficiently with high transactions per second similar to a central exchange.”Token launchGRVT enjoys the backing of CMS Holdings, Hong Kong’s digital assets wealth manager Metalpha, alongside Matter Labs and others. Yea founded the company alongside CTO Aaron Ong and CCO Matthew Quek. Although incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, the firm employs people who are based in Hong Kong, the UK, Lithuania, and Singapore. It recently disclosed that it had successfully raised $7.1 million in pre-seed and seed funding in an equity with a token warrant round, achieving a $39 million post-money valuation. The launch of GRVT’s token is anticipated in 2024.GRVT is also making a concerted effort to obtain trading licenses in various jurisdictions. Currently, it has attained a virtual asset service provider (VASP) license in Lithuania, with work ongoing to achieve licensing in Bermuda. The firm hopes to then expand in Europe and the Middle East going forward.
