Thai Opposition Party Offers Election Crypto Sweetener

Policy & Regulation·April 11, 2023, 2:22 AM

Thailand’s opposition party, the Pheu Thai Party (PTP), has made a controversial move ahead of next month’s general election by offering 10,000 baht (approximately $300) in digital assets to citizens above 16 years old in exchange for their votes.

The stated intention of the policy is to spread the use of blockchain-based assets and attract international digital currencies, as well as to distribute products made in Thailand abroad using blockchain technology. Prommin Lertsuridej, who runs the party’s economic policy committee has claimed that 55 million Thai citizens will benefit from the measure if the PTP wins the election.

Populist policies

The plan will cost $15 billion and it is claimed that it will serve to revive the country’s struggling economy while providing relief to those struggling with debt. Additionally other populist measures will be pursued including an increase in the minimum wage and a minimum monthly household income guarantee.

The policy has been met with mixed reactions from citizens, with some welcoming the extra cash and others accusing the party of blatant, cynical manipulation. The PTP has tried to sidestep accusations of manipulation by stating that the money will be limited to spending on local economic stimulus projects. Additionally, it cannot be used for gambling or debt repayment, and must be spent within a four-kilometer radius. The party’s chief adviser on public participation and innovation, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, called this policy an attempt to draw the attention of international currencies to Thailand.

New crypto regulations

This policy announcement comes just two months after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand issued new regulations for crypto service providers. The regulations were implemented to prevent a situation similar to the recent FTX collapse and hack, which resulted in the loss of millions of dollars’ worth of digital assets. The SEC has required service providers to establish a digital wallet management system to ensure efficient custody and to have a contingency plan in case of a security breach.

Unintended consequences

While the PTPs policy has been met with criticism, it has also been seen as a bold move towards promoting the use of blockchain-based assets and digital currencies in Thailand. By offering citizens an incentive to use digital assets, the policy may encourage more people to explore this emerging market, which has the potential to create new opportunities for investment and economic growth.

Populist politics and policy comes with a heavy longer term cost. The PTPs policy may be successful in achieving its intended goals, or it could ultimately lead to unintended consequences. Regardless of the outcome, the PTPs policy is a significant development in Thailand’s growing digital asset market and may set a precedent for other countries seeking to promote the use of blockchain-based assets and digital currencies.

From an international perspective, even if the move backfires economically within Thailand, ever greater use and normalization of digital assets as in this case can only lead to greater overall adoption.

Intella X Explores Ways to Integrate YGG’s Soulbound Reputation Tokens into Its Wallet

Intella X Explores Ways to Integrate YGG’s Soulbound Reputation Tokens into Its WalletIntella X, a South Korean Web3 gaming platform, has announced its partnership with Yield Guild Games (YGG), a leading DeFi-powered gaming guild.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashBoosting Intella X’s global presenceThis collaborative effort is expected to boost Intella X’s presence in the global Web3 sector. YGG, boasting a membership base of over 450,000 worldwide and collaborating with more than 80 gaming companies, recently launched Superquest, a new way to earn in-game rewards. Superquest awards soulbound reputation tokens to gamers based on their level of community engagement and contributions. The two organizations will explore ways to integrate YGG soulbound reputation tokens into Intella X Wallet (IX Wallet), a Web3 wallet designated for the Intella X platform. In an attempt to expand its ecosystem, Intella X has soft-launched the Android and web versions of IX Wallet. Furthermore, the Korean Web3 platform in February joined forces with IndiGG, a sub-decentralized autonomous organization of YGG in India.Neowiz’s Q2 financialsIn the midst of these developments, Neowiz, the parent company of Intella X, last week disclosed its financial performance for the second quarter. The company garnered revenues amounting to KRW 70.1 billion ($52.7 million), signifying a year-on-year decrease of 0.2%. Neowiz incurred an operating loss of KRW 4.9 billion during the same period, venturing into negative territory in Q2. This setback can be attributed to escalated marketing expenditures associated with the launch of the mobile role-playing game “Brown Dust 2” and the third-year anniversary celebration of the MMORPG title “Kingdom.” The latter is the brainchild of game developer FOW Games, a company Neowiz acquired in May.Meanwhile, Neowiz’s Q2 net income recorded an 8% year-over-year increase, totaling KRW 22.4 billion. This one-time gain is due to the sale of certain shares the company owned in another entity as part of the wider FOW Games acquisition strategy.Path to recoveryIn the latter half of this year, Neowiz is gearing up for recovery, channeling its focus into in-house developed titles. A key highlight among these is the imminent launch of “Lies of P” on September 19. As the launch date of this soulslike video game, inspired by the narrative of Pinocchio, draws near, the company is poised to offer game packages for pre-sale commencing September 17. These packages will be accessible both online and in-person through the e-commerce platform SSG.com and the warehouse chain E-Mart Traders. An extensive global marketing campaign is also in the works, with Neowiz set to participate in Germany’s Gamescom 2023 later this month.

Superscrypt Backs Airstack’s Web3 Developer Platform

Superscrypt Backs Airstack’s Web3 Developer PlatformSingapore-based Superscrypt, an early stage blockchain investment company founded by state-owned global investment conglomerate Temasek, has led an investment round into Web3 developer platform, Airstack.Photo by Giorgio Trovato on UnsplashIndian influenceAirstack closed out the second tranche of its pre-seed funding round, having raised the largest portion of the $7 million raise via Superscrypt. Although based in Miami Beach, Florida, Airstack has a strong Indian influence. Three of its five founders, Deepesh Kumar, Vysakh Nair and Sarvesh Jain originate from the world’s most populous country. The firm’s main offering is to enable developers to be able to easily query on and off-chain data and integrate that same data into the Web3 apps that they are building. Airstack enables this functionality by featuring GraphQL, a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries with the user’s existing data, as a core component of its platform.Achieving greater functionality still, the start-up enhances that use of GraphQL by incorporating the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The company’s Miami Beach-based CEO and Co-Founder, Jason Goldberg, elaborated on the technology it is using in an interview with CoinDesk: “We did extensive interviews with developers over the past year, gaining insights into their previous tool usage and the challenges they faced. Airstack was built to directly address those pain points.”Recent platform launchThe product offering was launched last month and has already lured in over two hundred developers to use the platform. Those developers are harnessing the functionality of Airstack’s platform to assist them in their efforts to bring a broad range of dApps to market.Developer projects are grounded in areas such as marketing engines, decentralized finance (DeFi) portfolio optimizers, customer resource management tools, advertising platforms, and decentralized social media apps, together with messaging applications. With just a straightforward query and response approach, developers can use Airstack platform functionality to query, combine, and integrate on-chain or off-chain, cross-chain, and cross-application data. The offering applies to queries relative to the Ethereum and Polygon blockchain networks. The project intends to support additional blockchain networks going forward, while also intending to increase the level of query complexity made available to platform users.Joining Superscrypt on the Airstack cap table are Hashed Emergent, NGC, Primal Capital, UOB Ventures, Signum Capital, and others. Goldberg articulated the firm’s strategy going forward: “Our immediate focus is to onboard thousands of developers onto Airstack in the coming months. We aim to identify the areas where we add the most value and where genuine business use cases emerge before finalizing our pricing model.”Social app upgradeAt the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status. That functionality can be extended further, so that data can be gathered across projects, creating bespoke user profiles relative to the user’s blockchain activity and presence. At the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status.
