Web3 & Enterprise·February 07, 2024, 1:54 AM

Oobit, the mobile crypto payment app based in Singapore, has raised $25 million in a series A funding round with the assistance of leading stablecoin issuer Tether.

Funding global expansion

The company aims to broaden its reach across Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, with a strategic focus on bringing its platform to more mainstream users. While the company’s primary markets currently lie within the European Union and the UK, Oobit will be targeting the Asia Pacific (APAC) region and specific jurisdictions such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Canada and Australia. This expansion aligns with the company's goal of accelerating the development of a Web3 gateway.

The funding round was led by Tether alongside Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana Labs. Additionally, Germany’s 468 Capital, a technology investment firm, and Hong Kong-headquartered CMCC Global joined as contributors. CMCC invested through its $100 million Titan Fund, which it established last year to support blockchain startups in the Asian region.

Enabling users to spend crypto

Oobit's mobile payment app allows consumers to make purchases using cryptocurrencies, while merchants receive payments in fiat currency. The tap-and-pay feature enhances accessibility, enabling users to pay at any point of sale accepting Visa or MasterCard funds from their Oobit wallet. Furthermore, Oobit facilitates the direct purchase of bitcoin, ether and more than 35 other popular cryptocurrencies within its app.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino expressed support for Oobit's development, emphasizing a shared vision for driving widespread cryptocurrency adoption globally. Oobit's co-founder and CEO, Amram Adar, highlighted the funding round as a pivotal moment, propelling the company forward in its mission to offer a straightforward way to pay with digital assets worldwide.

Introducing non-custodial payments

The company plans to extend its capabilities to third-party wallets, transitioning into a non-custodial crypto payments app. This move will allow payments to and from external e-wallets, bridging the gap between Web3 and real-world spending.

A company spokeswoman stated via email:

"We have several partnerships in the pipeline that will be announced in the coming months," hinting at Oobit's commitment to ongoing collaboration and expansion.

Oobit's vision is to empower crypto holders to Tap & Pay at over 100 million retailers globally, accepting Visa and MasterCard. Merchants can seamlessly embrace digital assets as a form of payment, and customers can conveniently use their digital assets for transactions. Future updates to Oobit will enable customers to make crypto payments, ensuring merchants receive fiat currency in return, mirroring the simplicity of credit card transactions.

The native cryptocurrency of Oobit is the OBT token through which the platform rewards its growing community and ecosystem. The token is used for transaction fees and payments. The OBT token is currently trading at $0.0992, according to CoinMarketCap data.

With the backing of industry leaders and a user-centric focus, Oobit is attempting to position itself to make significant strides in its mission to facilitate frictionless transactions and promote the adoption of cryptocurrencies on a global scale.

Vietnam launches five-year pilot to regulate crypto asset trading

Vietnam has launched a five-year pilot program imposing stringent new rules on the cryptocurrency industry, signaling a move toward tighter control over the rapidly growing sector. According to a Sept. 9 report from the Government Electronic Newspaper, cited by Cointelegraph, the resolution put the regulatory framework into immediate effect. The move aims to establish clear rules for the trading and issuance of crypto assets in the country.Photo by Silver Ringvee on UnsplashLocal currency and licensing requirementsUnder the new pilot program, all crypto transactions must be conducted in the local currency, the Vietnamese dong. The rules stipulate that only Vietnamese-registered enterprises may issue digital assets, while foreign investors can access them only through crypto asset service providers (CASPs) licensed by the Ministry of Finance. Firms seeking a license face high barriers to entry. Applicants must demonstrate profitable business operations for the two consecutive years preceding their application. Furthermore, CASPs are required to maintain a minimum capital of 10 trillion dong (approximately $379 million). The pilot also places firm restrictions on the nature of crypto assets themselves. They must be backed exclusively by real, tangible assets. The issuance of assets backed by fiat currencies or securities is prohibited. Broader legal contextThis pilot program follows the country's decision in June to officially legalize digital assets, with the new law set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2026. The legislation categorizes digital assets into two types: virtual assets, used for exchange or investment, and crypto assets, which rely on encryption for validation. The law clarifies that neither category includes securities, digital representations of fiat currency, or other financial instruments already defined under existing civil and financial laws. The framework also mandates that regulatory agencies implement robust measures to ensure cybersecurity and combat money laundering and terrorism financing. High adoption and tech initiativesThe government's focus on regulation comes as no surprise, given Vietnam's position as a global leader in cryptocurrency adoption. A recent study by Chainalysis ranked Vietnam fourth in its 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index, highlighting widespread grassroots activity across both centralized and decentralized platforms, similar to trends seen in India and Pakistan. Beyond regulation, Vietnam is actively leveraging blockchain technology for national infrastructure. The government has deployed NDAChain, a national blockchain platform designed to authenticate and trace data origins. Developed by the National Data Association, it aims to provide a decentralized layer of trust for critical systems in e-government, finance, healthcare, and education, addressing the vulnerabilities of centralized data models. Hanoi's crypto ambitions also extend beyond its borders. Last month, Vietnam's Military Bank signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Dunamu, the operator of South Korea’s largest crypto exchange, Upbit. The partnership is aimed at developing Vietnam’s financial landscape, with Dunamu providing expertise on establishing a crypto exchange, building a regulatory framework, and implementing investor protection measures.

USDT stablecoin receives full regulatory approval in Abu Dhabi

The Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA), a regulatory body within the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) economic free zone and financial center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has fully approved USD₮, the world’s leading U.S. dollar stablecoin by market cap, as an accepted virtual asset (AVA).Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashPre-approved USDT servicesUSDT issuer Tether publicized details of the approval via a statement published to its website on Dec. 10. The company outlined that the approval means that “Authorised Persons” operating and licensed by the FSRA can offer pre-approved services related to USDT. The company stated that the approval facilitates the integration of USDT into regulated financial ecosystems in Abu Dhabi while also claiming that the move helps to advance the region’s leadership relative to digital asset innovation. The FSRA has acknowledged acceptance of the leading stablecoin with recognition of its issuance on various blockchains including Ethereum, Solana and Avalanche. Validating the importance of stablecoins With the ADGM regulator now fully accepting and recognizing the stablecoin, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said that the move goes beyond just “validating the importance of stablecoins as critical tools for modern finance,” as he believes it opens the door for collaboration and growth across the Middle East. Stablecoins are increasingly playing a significant role in bridging the gap between traditional finance (TradFi) and the Web3 sector. In October, crypto asset fund manager Bitwise identified a number of key insights that point to the ongoing development and use of stablecoins.  It outlined that the top five stablecoin projects are currently holding more U.S. Treasury bonds than some G20 countries. Tether recorded profits last year that surpassed those of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager. Bitwise identified that leading payments firms like Visa are adopting stablecoins and incorporating them into their platforms for the purpose of effecting transactions. A month prior to that, Wall Street investment bank Bernstein highlighted the fact that stablecoins are playing an increasingly important role relative to the global financial system as a whole.  It’s thought that this latest development in Abu Dhabi may act as a further driver of USDT’s market cap. At the time of writing, the stablecoin asset had a market cap in excess of $140 billion. Its inclusion as an AVA reinforces the crypto asset’s position as the most used stablecoin within the industry. AE Coin licensing In a further boost for further roll-out of stablecoins in the Middle East, the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) awarded the final license to fully approve AE Coin, a UAE dirham-denominated stablecoin. Commenting on the development, AE Coin General Manager Ramez Rafeek said, "AE Coin harnesses the speed and efficiency of blockchain technology, offering instant, secure, and cost-effective transactions. It simplifies transfers, making them faster and more seamless." In an effort to bring about greater adoption of the stablecoin, the AE Coin project intends to engage in partnerships with payment gateways, financial institutions and technology providers going forward. Tether also has plans to launch a dirham-backed stablecoin, having recently partnered with UAE-based entities to bring that about.
