CMCC Global leads funding round

The funding, announced via a blog post published to the firm’s website on Monday, was spearheaded by CMCC Global, a Hong Kong-headquartered venture capital firm that focuses solely on blockchain-related investments. Additionally, the round saw participation from prominent investors including Kingsway Capital, Liberty City Ventures, and GameFi Ventures.

Prominent individuals within the industry also contributed, including Aleksander Larsen, Co-Founder of Sky Mavis, the developer of well-known blockchain play-to-earn game Axie Infinity, and Gabby Dizon, Founder of Yield Guild Games.

Mocaverse, Animoca Brands’ ambitious project, is dedicated to the development of Web3-native tools catering to the gaming and entertainment sectors. This funding round points to the growing recognition of Web3’s potential to transform digital identities, particularly so within the areas of gaming, culture, and entertainment.

Aiming to redefine Web3 user engagement

Mocaverse aims to redefine how users engage with these sectors by providing innovative solutions and unique experiences. One noteworthy aspect of this funding initiative is Animoca Brands’ commitment to granting investors “a free-attaching utility token warrant on a 1:1 dollar basis.” This strategic move not only bolsters investor confidence but also aligns their interests with the long-term success of Mocaverse.

The injection of capital will be instrumental in advancing the Mocaverse project, with the imminent launch of Moca ID being a key milestone. Moca ID, a non-transferrable NFT collection, empowers users to create and nurture their on-chain identities, offering exclusive access to the Mocaverse ecosystem and the opportunity to earn loyalty points through active participation.

Yat Siu, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Animoca Brands, who also participated in this funding round on a personal basis, expressed his vision for Mocaverse, stating:

“The ongoing evolution of the Internet involves a shift from hierarchical power structures to autonomous ones, and the DAO-based approach of Mocaverse ensures that its community will be focused on driving innovation and collaboration across the broader Animoca Brands ecosystem.”

Siu emphasized that Mocaverse’s scope extends beyond individual empowerment. It is poised to serve as a digital identity, reputation, and loyalty system for various decentralized organizations.

Web3 thought leadership

The Animoca Brands Co-Founder is catching the public eye with his commentary and thought leadership relative to the fledgling Web3 sector. In an interview last week, Siu voiced his belief that Saudi Arabia is proactively nurturing blockchain gaming, revealing that Animoca itself has partnered with the Gulf state on a Web3-related project.

Giving a keynote speech at the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in Paris in July, he voiced his opinion that Hong Kong’s recent crypto development has been sanctioned by mainland China.

The $20 million raised signifies a significant stride toward realizing the potential of Web3 technology in shaping the future of gaming, culture, and entertainment. With Mocaverse at the forefront, Animoca Brands is poised to attempt to create a vibrant ecosystem where users can actively engage, redefine their digital identities, and unlock new economic opportunities, all within a collaborative and decentralized framework.

Korea’s FSC Opposes Other Agencies’ Involvement in Virtual Asset Bill

Korea’s FSC Opposes Other Agencies’ Involvement in Virtual Asset BillAhead of the National Assembly’s passage of the virtual asset bill, the Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) has repeatedly opposed the involvement of the Bank of Korea (BOK) and the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) in regulating cryptocurrencies, according to the Korean newspaper Kukmin Ilbo.©Pexels/LukasFSC’s oppositionIn a document submitted to the National Assembly’s National Policy Committee, the FSC opposed stipulating the BOK’s right to request documents in the virtual asset bill. The agency argued that the bill is indirectly related to the BOK’s monetary and credit policy and that explicitly mentioning monetary and credit policy in the bill could lead to the misinterpretation of virtual assets as possessing the characteristics of currencies. The FSC also objected to stipulating the FSS’s right to inspect crypto enterprises. According to law, the purpose of the FSC is to inspect and supervise financial institutions. Explicitly stating the FSS’s right to inspect crypto enterprises could cause confusion to the public that they are financial entities. However, there are growing concerns about the FSC’s perceived intention to dominate virtual asset jurisdiction. At a small meeting held under the National Policy Committee last month, Lawmaker Yoon Han-hong of the ruling People Power Party expressed the view that the FSC should consider incorporating the BOK and the FSS in the virtual asset bill for crypto regulations. During the meeting, the FSC objected to the inclusion of a stipulation that excludes central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) from the definition of virtual assets. Meanwhile, the BOK agreed to include such a stipulation.Allowing class action suitsAccording to an internal document obtained by Kukmin Ilbo, the FSC also intends to allow class action suits for crypto investors. It seeks to add cryptocurrencies to a bill proposed for class action suits, which also deal with securities. Class action suits provide a means for victims to receive redress in cases where a representative is successful in winning the lawsuit against the offender. The FSC stated that it will follow the majority on the issue of whether the purpose of the virtual asset bill should include the phrase “to contribute to the development of the nation’s economy,” although it left a cautionary note that some might raise objections to this, considering the speculative nature of virtual assets.

Legislator calls for Bitcoin reserve in Hong Kong

In an interview with local media, Hong Kong legislator Johnny Ng called for the Chinese autonomous territory to implement a national Bitcoin reserve. Ng made the comments in a discussion with Hong Kong-based state-owned Chinese language media outlet, Wenweipo. The legislator believes that there is an opportunity for Hong Kong to take advantage of China’s “one country, two systems” approach to governance, which gives it the freedom to implement such a reserve despite mainland China remaining much less enthusiastic where Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are concerned.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashSpot Bitcoin ETF impactThe Hong Kong Legislative Council member suggested that as a first step, Hong Kong needs to assess the impact that spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States have had. Spot Bitcoin ETFs were launched in the U.S. in January. The leading spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT, provided by asset manager BlackRock, has achieved a growth rate five times faster than any other ETF launched in the past. El Salvador and the Kingdom of Bhutan are examples of nations that have made Bitcoin a significant component within their national reserves. A recent report suggests that El Salvador currently holds 6,000 Bitcoin which it purchased at an average price of $45,465. In November, Arkham Intelligence reported that Bhutan was holding Bitcoin with a dollar value which had exceeded $1 billion at that time. Ng also referred to a move by individual states in the U.S. towards holding Bitcoin as a reserve asset. In August, the state of Wisconsin increased its holdings of shares in BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT. Last month, the state of Pennsylvania introduced a bill to make Bitcoin a strategic asset. Ohio has proposed similar legislation while Alabama’s State Auditor, Andrew Sorrell, has suggested that his state should establish a Bitcoin reserve. Reducing price volatilityNg believes that furthering the Chinese autonomous territory’s dealings relative to Bitcoin could prove beneficial, given that Bitcoin has the potential to play a role in attracting more talent and investment to Hong Kong. Additionally, he feels that the development of Bitcoin reserves at state level could help in reducing the price volatility of the asset as it goes through the process of global adoption. The Hong Kong lawmaker also believes that there is an opportunity for the Chinese antonymous territory to benefit from first mover advantage, stating that “the value of Bitcoin will be more stable, causing more and more other countries to follow suit and reduce their holdings of traditional assets.” Ng's latest interview follows a similar comment he made on X in July, where he suggested that Bitcoin is worth considering as an official financial reserve for a country. David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, took to X stating: “Hong Kong making moves, SBR here we go. President Trump must make the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve his top priority the day he enters the White House.”In recent days, soundings from Japan and Russia suggested that neither of these countries was prepared to establish Bitcoin reserves. However, just like with the advent of the Bitcoin ETF in the U.S., following Trump’s expression of interest in the establishment of a strategic Bitcoin reserve, the level of consideration of the matter has increased considerably among governments around the world.
