Boosting ecosystem projects

The $250 million fund is aiming to boost key TON ecosystem projects, with a particular focus on DeFi. The TON Foundation is already canvassing projects to participate and apply for funding.

Successful applicants will be offered between $50,000 and $250,000. The scheme goes beyond funding. Projects will also get to avail of mentorship from partners like GotBit, a consulting service targeted at blockchain start-ups. Growth advisory firm Web3Port will also be available to successful candidates in that mentorship role.

UAE-based multi-strategy crypto investment firm Cypher Capital will also be at the disposal of the TON-based start-ups, while they will also have the ability to access the Tonstarter launchpad. Additionally, the scheme features participation from East Asia, with South Korea-based Boom Labs, an incubator for Web3 developers, lending its support.

Justin Hyun, Head of Incubation and Growth at the TON Foundation, had this to say about the development:

“This is the beginning of many different incubators which will be supported in the future. Funding forms part of our local hubs rollout strategy and our ecosystem will work to attract new developers as well as successful repeat founders, based across a variety of key global locations.”

$25M funding in first year

Funding will be allocated from the TONcoin.Fund, a $250 million TON syndicate which invests in teams and projects that build on The Open Network. In the first year of the program, $25 million will be allocated.

Bill Qian, Chairman of Cypher Capital, said that the program “is unique within the Web3 universe today.” “TON Accelerator Program is taking the well-known incubator principle from the Web2 ecosystem, refining it, and evolving it by incorporating the best practices of Web3 protocols and methodologies,” he added.

DoraHacks Hack-a-TONx

In its announcement the TON Foundation outlined its intention to select the first successful projects from those who took part in the DoraHacks Hack-a-TONx. Hack-a-TONx was a two-month-long hackathon, put together by the TON Foundation in coordination with global hackathon organizer and multi-chain Web3 developer community, DoraHacks.

Submissions are being accepted by the TON Foundation from projects that have built on TON, who already have a minimum viable product (MVP). Although originally promoted by the makers of the Telegram messaging app, since 2020, TON has harnessed the TON Foundation to develop the project as a community-run and community-led open source initiative.

The African nations of Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of Congo have all expressed an interest in adopting the TON blockchain. Earlier this month, the TON Foundation entered into a partnership with the Seychelles-based BIT crypto exchange. That collaboration will see BIT accepting TON tokens from its users for the payment of trading fees, with discounts offered to the exchange users who opt to pay using TON.

3AC Founders Vow to Donate Future Earnings

3AC Founders Vow to Donate Future EarningsThe co-founders of the Singapore-headquartered bankrupt crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC) have publicly committed to donating their “future earnings” to creditors who suffered losses during the fund’s dramatic collapse.Kyle Davies and Su Zhu made this groundbreaking announcement during a candid Twitter Spaces session hosted by Mario Nafwal, aiming to establish a “shadow recovery process” parallel to the ongoing liquidation proceedings.Photo by Josh Appel on UnsplashBelieving in karmaDavies explained that their intended donations would be separate from the formal recovery process, designed to supplement any reimbursements that creditors might receive through the liquidation proceedings. While acknowledging that some early creditors have already been made whole, he emphasized the founders’ unwavering belief in the concept of “karma.”They see their act of giving back as a way to balance the scales and provide an avenue for creditors to potentially recover their losses.Creditor skepticismHowever, these noble intentions expressed by Davies and Zhu have been met with skepticism from the crypto community and the very creditors they seek to assist. Teneo, the liquidator overseeing the 3AC liquidation, responded to Davies’ comments by expressing disappointment in the founders’ lack of cooperation during the ongoing process. They stressed that the founders should prioritize engaging in the court-ordered activities rather than making promises about future earnings from a new venture.Acknowledging concerns about optics, Davies addressed questions surrounding the launch of their new crypto exchange, Open Exchange (OPNX), while their previous company undergoes liquidation. He stressed the inherent connection between OPNX and the creditors, suggesting that the success of their new entrepreneurial endeavor would ultimately benefit those affected by the collapse of Three Arrows Capital.OPNX success requiredOPNX, the newly launched Dubai-based trading platform, is specifically designed to facilitate the trading of bankruptcy claims. Since its announcement in February, the platform has garnered significant attention, boasting an impressive user base of 20 million individuals holding a collective $20 billion in claims. It is worth noting that the collapse of Three Arrows Capital resulted in the loss of $2.5 billion in customer deposits, making the success of OPNX crucial for creditors seeking redress.Davies also revealed that OPNX currently records approximately $50 million in daily trading volume, showcasing promising early traction for the platform. However, the exact mechanics of the “shadow recovery process” were left unspecified. While OPNX currently only facilitates the trading of claims from lender Celsius, the platform has ambitious plans to include claims from other high-profile bankruptcies in the near future. The list of potential additions encompasses notable entities such as FTX, Genesis, BlockFi, Voyager, Hodlnaut, Mt. Gox, Vauld, Zipmex, and even Three Arrows Capital itself. When taken at face value, the founders’ pledge to donate future earnings to creditors takes on the appearance of a significant and commendable gesture. However, doubts persist within the crypto community due to the founders’ prior actions and the ongoing liquidation process. Only time will reveal the true impact of this “shadow recovery process” and whether it will genuinely alleviate the losses suffered by creditors in the wake of Three Arrows Capital’s collapse.

LG CNS Chooses Six Startups to Foster Innovation in Digital Transformation

LG CNS Chooses Six Startups to Foster Innovation in Digital TransformationLG CNS, the information technology (IT) arm of South Korean conglomerate LG Group, said Tuesday that it has chosen six startups to nurture under its sixth annual Startup Monster program — a program dedicated to supporting technology startups that are capable of pioneering consumer values in the realm of digital transformation (DX). By directly contributing to their growth as startups, LG CNS also aims to secure them as future business partners.Photo by Milad Fakurian on UnsplashAmong those startups is Zkrypto, a company specializing in zero-knowledge proof technology — a method of providing the validity of a statement without revealing the statement itself. Zkrypto will work with LG CNS on security solutions and privacy protection services necessary for operating digital finance services such as digital wallets and security tokens. The two companies already established their relationship earlier last month when they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop blockchain-powered business models.Investing in startup growthUnder the program, the companies will undergo a six-month technology assessment as well as receive KRW 100 million (approximately $75,000) in funding to demonstrate the feasibility of technology integration into their businesses. LG CNS said that it would carry out the assessment by leveraging its extensive business references and technical resources along with assistance from other IT experts.“Through the Startup Monster program, we will continue to discover and nurture promising startups with innovative technologies and create an ecosystem where we can grow together,” said Jeon Eun-kyung, Executive Director of LG CNS’ Convergence Technology Research Institute.Participants from diverse industriesThis year’s recruitment attracted over 240 applicants, resulting in a highly competitive selection ratio of 40:1. Other selected startups besides Zkrypto include GradeHealthChain, Quantum Universe, Delivery Lab, mAy-I, and Circle Platform, which specialize in emerging DX technologies, such as big data analysis, artificial intelligence (AI) modeling, and extended reality (XR).GradeHealthChain is known for its health management app LOG, which analyzes health checkup results and medical information to allocate an overall health score. Users can provide these scores and other medical information to insurance companies partnered with GradeHealthChain to receive premium discounts on insurance. In turn, the insurance companies can use this data to accurately assess the customer’s health status and recommend optimal insurance products. LG CNS plans to work with GradeHealthChain to create services for insurance product recommendations. On the other hand, Quantum Universe specializes in the planning, production, and distribution of XR content. With LG CNS, the company will jointly develop digital twin technology that replicates physical objects in a digital environment for applications in smart factories and manufacturing. They are also pursuing marketing projects using metaverse technology.mAy-I and Circle Platform were chosen for the program for their impressive technical capabilities in data collection and AI modeling. Survey Reveals Favorable Public Opinion on Binance’s Acquisition of Korean Exchange Gopax

Survey Reveals Favorable Public Opinion on Binance’s Acquisition of Korean Exchange GopaxCratos, a South Korean blockchain-based polling app, conducted a survey from June 12 to June 14 to gauge public opinion on whether the Financial Services Commission (FSC) should approve the request of Korean cryptocurrency exchange Gopax’s operator Streami to change its representatives, as reported by local news outlet The Stock. This change is necessary for global crypto exchange Binance to acquire Gopax. The survey, which involved 2,093 participants, revealed that 64.6% of respondents favored approving the acquisition, while 35.4% opposed it. More than half of the participants believed that approving the acquisition would safeguard investors’ assets deposited in Gopax.Photo by Heesang Park on PexelsSurvey resultsWhen analyzed by age group, the survey found that respondents in their teens and 20s were more likely to disagree with the acquisition, with 69.4% and 52.3%, respectively. However, those in their 30s were more inclined to support it. Notably, over 70% of respondents in their 50s agreed with the acquisition.Among those who favored Binance’s acquisition, 55.5% chose investor protection as their reason. 33.5% believed there were no legal grounds to refuse the acquisition (33.5%), and 11.0% expressed concerns about the potential shrinkage of the crypto market (11.0%).On the other hand, the most common reason given by respondents for opposing the acquisition was the risk of Binance’s opaque business and financial structure (45.8%). This was followed by the ineligibility of executives, representatives, and other major shareholders (37.4%) and the risk of disrupting the crypto market (16.8%).Consensus on investor protectionCratos CEO Kang Dong-won explained that the crypto winter, characterized by declining crypto asset values, has been prolonged due to a series of negative news at home and abroad, including the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) lawsuits against Binance and Coinbase, poor performance of crypto exchanges, and controversy over a Korean lawmaker’s alleged holding and investment of crypto assets. Kang believes that the survey findings reflect falling crypto yields, leading to a growing consensus on the need for investor principal protection and victim relief. On March 7, Streami submitted a report to notify the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) under the FSC about the change of its representatives. However, the Korean financial watchdog has been pending its decision amid Binance’s legal issues. The concern is that if Binance fails to acquire Gopax, investors could suffer losses since their assets worth KRW 56.6 billion are held in GoFi, the exchange’s crypto deposit service. On June 8, GoFi users sent a public inquiry to the FIU regarding the reasons for the delay in approving the exchange operator’s request. In the meantime, Streami is exploring ways to address this challenge by announcing its board meeting scheduled for next week. The meeting will discuss changing its CEO from Leon Sing Foong, Asia Pacific Head at Binance, to Lee Joong-hoon, Gopax’s current Vice President, as it is believed that appointing a Korean national as the CEO would facilitate smoother communication with the government.
