Given the distributed nature of the teams behind decentralized networks and projects, it can be difficult at times to determine where project teams are based, albeit in the case of MetisDAO, according to LinkedIn, its primary location is Singapore despite having a Canadian Co-Founder and CEO.

Aave’s move to ZK networks

The move comes following a vote taken by Aave’s user community, who voted in favor last month of a proposal to deploy the liquidity protocol on zero knowledge-based networks. In a social media post, the Metis team referred to the decentralized lending market going live on the network as “a new era of Decentralized Finance.”

The development is significant for Metis, given that Aave is the third largest project in crypto based on the total value locked (TVL) metric. Within DeFi lending, it’s the biggest project in the sector, holding a TVL of $5.4 billion.

One of the keys of Aave’s dominance is its multi-chain strategy. Metis marks the eighth network upon which it has been deployed. The others include Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Fantom, Harmony and Avalanche.

Metis technical roadmap

While there’s a lot of uncertainty as to how various crypto projects will pan out over the longer run, most agree that Ethereum is here to stay. Metis stands a good chance of contributing to that ecosystem over the long term as layer two scaling networks are likely to be part and parcel of the Ethereum environment for some time to come.

Last month, the project set out a technical roadmap, detailing what the project has in store, while claiming that in general, 2023 would be a great year for Ethereum. Metis is a layer two network based on Optimistic Rollup architecture. It has grown into the third largest scaling network relative to Ethereum.

The project plans to roll out Bedrock, a technical upgrade that will enable improved network security. Furthermore, it plans on bringing about consensus and execution separation. Also in its sights are faster deposit times, which the project claims, will enable better UX.

Many DeFi networks are under scrutiny in terms of the centralized elements that they incorporate. Metis plans to make improvements in this regard, with the intention of decentralizing the sequencer pool. The project claims that “Metis Andromeda will be decentralized to the core.”

Hybrid rollups

Demonstrating further ambition, Metis is aspiring to bring about hybrid rollups, combining the features of optimistic rollup architecture with zero-knowledge proofs. In a tweet, Head of Marketing and MetisDAO Co-Founder Kevin Li said that “by combining the best traits from both schemes, hybrid rollups will offer the unmatched scalability and EVM-equivalence of optimistic rollups, together with the censorship resistance and fast finality enabled by zero-knowledge proofs. The best of both worlds.”

MetisDAO believes it adds value for users of its network through Aave’s offering, enabling them to borrow assets with less collateral via Aave’s High-Efficiency mode. Furthermore, the deployment makes for improved risk management through supply and borrow caps, and siloed borrowing, reducing the risk in the event of market contagion.

Hong Kong Setting High Bar on Crypto Rules

Hong Kong Setting High Bar on Crypto RulesLucy Gazmararian, a Fintech Advisory Group member of Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and founder of crypto venture firm Token Bay Capital has said that the standards for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) in Hong Kong are incredibly high.©Pexels/Brayden LawThe Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has established these strict guidelines as they want the crypto industry to adhere to the same compliance standards as traditional financial firms.Gazmararian made the comments in discussion with Cointelegraph on the fringes of the Hong Kong WOW Summit. Although the bar is set high, Gazmararian maintains that it is not without good reason. The SFC’s approach is to ask VASPs to apply the same standards that existing financial institutions such as huge banks and asset managers must comply with.Short term challengesAccording to a consultation paper released by the SFC on February 20th, licensed VASPs may serve retail investors, but the standard of investor protection measures imposed needs to be considered. Additionally, Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) policies were also discussed. While these high standards may benefit the industry in the long run, Gazmararian believes they may pose challenges for the crypto industry in Hong Kong over the short term. She explained that many crypto businesses are in the startup phase and have funding but not huge amounts. Therefore, complying with the framework may incur significant costs. Gazmararian mentioned the need for local VASPs to have insurance, independent assessment reports, and store crypto in cold storage. It is important to note that these costs may prevent some startups from entering the market, which may have consequences on the industry’s growth in Hong Kong. The Token Bay Capital founder believes that with a solid regulatory framework in place, more well-capitalized financial firms will be willing to help promising startups get off the ground. In her opinion, the companies that receive a license will be upholding the most stringent standards.Ambitions to be global crypto hubThe SFC has encouraged individuals, corporations, and crypto firms to review the 361-page consultation paper and provide feedback. The securities regulator wants these entities to share their views and point to things that may have been missed. According to Gazmararian, the SFC is “absolutely focused” on getting everything right, so they are seeking input from a wide range of sources.Submissions for feedback on the consultation paper closed on March 31. Hong Kong has made significant strides in recent months to establish itself as the world’s next crypto hub. According to a March 20 statement by the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Christian Hui, more than 80 digital asset firms have expressed interest in establishing a presence in Hong Kong over the last few months. This interest is a testament to the growing importance of the crypto industry and the favorable environment that Hong Kong is creating for its growth.

Ethereum Foundation targets Asian expansion with Bangkok set for Devcon 7

The Ethereum Foundation is set to make a significant impact on the Southeast Asian Ethereum community as it announces Bangkok as the location for Devcon 7.Photo by Viktor Forgacs on UnsplashFocusing on Southeast AsiaThe Ethereum developer conference will be held in the Thai capital from Nov. 12 to 15. The decision signifies a broadened vision for the event, shifting from a city-focused approach to embracing the entire Southeast Asia region as the backdrop for this community gathering. To underscore the Foundation’s intent, it has renamed the event from Devcon 7 to "Devcon Southeast Asia." Expressing enthusiasm about the potential and rapid growth of the Ethereum community in Southeast Asia, the Ethereum Foundation sees the scheduling of Devcon 7 for 2024 as an opportunity to deeply engage with local communities, providing meaningful support and empowerment. This shift aims to make Devcon 7 a more inclusive and regionally focused event, aptly named "Devcon Southeast Asia" to highlight its broader reach and impact. There has already been a positive reaction from crypto community members in the region in response to the choice of Bangkok for the conference. Navaporn Nalita, the founder of Crypto City Connext in Thailand wrote that “Bangkok's collaborative ecosystem, welcomes Devcon 2024 with open arms (and open blockchains)! Thailand's vibrant dev scene is primed to ignite alongside the world's brightest minds.” In short order, community builders have been looking to make the most out of the opportunity. Aligning with crypto growth potentialAccording to the blog post published by the Ethereum Foundation outlining the announcement, the choice of Bangkok as the host city aligns with the region's crypto adoption growth. Countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand have shown remarkable positions in the Global Crypto Adoption Index, underscoring the pivotal role of Southeast Asia in the global Ethereum landscape. To support Ethereum events, grassroots communities and educational initiatives in Southeast Asia, the Ethereum Foundation (EF) initiated the Road to Devcon (RTD) Grants round on June 29. This grant round is specifically aimed at individuals in Southeast Asia actively building communities, developing educational activities, and contributing to the growth of the Ethereum ecosystem. Encouraging smaller meet-ups over large events, the EF set the maximum grant at $1,000. The initiative aims to empower the Southeast Asian Ethereum community by providing support along the Road to Devcon. In a recent Chainalysis research report, Vietnam has emerged as the leader in cryptocurrency adoption within Southeast Asia, claiming the top spot in the region and ranking third globally in the Global Crypto Adoption Index for 2023. This index considers transaction volumes, protocols, web traffic patterns and factors like population size and purchasing power. The competition among Southeast Asian countries to establish themselves as crypto hubs is evident. Each nation adopts different regulatory approaches, with Singapore and Thailand implementing stricter measures. There has been a steady stream of Ethereum developer-centric conferences in recent years. 2022 featured EthDenver, Avax Barcelona, Devconnect Amsterdam, Devcon Bogota and EthSF (San Francisco). EthDenver, EthCC Paris and Devconnect Istanbul followed in 2023. As Devcon Southeast Asia approaches, the Ethereum Foundation anticipates fostering deeper connections and collaboration in this vibrant and evolving ecosystem.
