Reuters: Coinbase and Gemini likely to secure licenses in EU

June 14, 2025, 12:41 AM
U.S. cryptocurrency exchanges Coinbase and Gemini are likely to secure licenses to legally offer crypto-related services across the European Union (EU), Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. However, there is a growing divergence among regulators over the pace and criteria for regulatory approval in some countries. Under the new rules of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), a regional crypto regulation law in the EU that took effect earlier this year, member states can issue licenses that allow crypto firms to operate across all 27 EU countries. Gemini and Coinbase are expected to receive their first EU crypto licenses in Malta and Luxembourg, respectively.
