Experts Discuss Korean Security Token Market

Markets·April 19, 2023, 3:25 AM

Since the Korean financial regulator released regulatory guidelines on security tokens in February, many have anticipated that the introduction of security tokens would transform the concept of investment and give rise to new market strategies based on blockchain technology.

Industry professionals have expressed their opinions on the matter in interviews with media outlets.

Token issuance and distribution

Park Hyo-jin, vice president at Sejong Telecom, in a recent interview with Korean media outlet Digital Today, expressed his disappointment about the Korean government’s decision to separate token issuance from token distribution. Sejong Telecom is the developer and operator of the blockchain-based real estate fractional investment platform Bbric.

According to Park, the capital market law separates token issuance from token distribution in order to prevent conflicts of interest, as interested parties may attempt to control financial products according to their own preferences. However, things are different with security tokens, Park believes. With the help of blockchain technology, a mainnet can issue and distribute tokens without intermediaries.

Higher investment limits

Park emphasized the importance of increasing investment limits and cited the small size of the Korea New Exchange (KONEX), a stock exchange for small enterprises, as a reason for its lack of activity. He added that higher caps would result in positive ripple effects.

Regarding real estate security tokens, Park doesn’t expect more profitable products, but sees that more investment choices will be available. He is particularly interested in investment contract securities. One such example is renting a piece of land to farmers to distribute harvest profits.

Connection with virtual assets

The security token market will face limitations if it’s not connected with its virtual asset counterpart. He mentioned the need for a digital asset law to create an ecosystem that links security tokens with virtual assets.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Economic Review, Lee Kun-ho, former CEO of KB Kookmin Bank, showed a somewhat pessimistic view about the Korean security token market while admitting its potential.

Various uncertainties

In his opinion, while real estate holds potential as a security token investment, government policies may introduce uncertainties. Likewise, the markets for music and artwork are also subject to unpredictability. Consequently, security token strategies in these areas could encounter limitations.

Lee also sees that some of the services don’t necessitate blockchain technology. It is unlikely that any clear winners will emerge in the short term; therefore, it is vital for the industry to approach this issue with prudence, he added.

WazirX hack: Hacker launders $10M through Tornado Cash amid legal disputes and partial withdrawals

In the aftermath of the massive $235 million hack of the WazirX cryptocurrency exchange on July 18, users and stakeholders are grappling with its devastating consequences. The breach, which compromised a significant portion of the exchange’s reserves, has led to a series of legal, financial and security-related challenges, leaving millions of users uncertain about the future of their funds. The hack and its aftermathWazirX, once a leading Indian cryptocurrency exchange, lost approximately $235 million due to a breach in one of its multi-signature wallets. This included significant amounts of Shiba Inu (SHIB), Ethereum (ETH) and other assets. The hack crippled the exchange, forcing it to temporarily shut down operations and seek a restructuring process under Singapore's insolvency laws. The WazirX hacker has since begun laundering the stolen assets through Tornado Cash, a crypto mixer known for obscuring transaction details. According to blockchain security firm Cyvers, the hacker transferred over 5,000 ETH (approximately $12 million) to a new wallet and laundered $10 million in Ethereum through Tornado Cash. This mirrors the tactics of the North Korea-backed Lazarus Group, which has used similar methods in past high-profile crypto thefts. Photo by GuerrillaBuzz on UnsplashUsers seeking redress and government interventionAs the victims of the hack face uncertainty, over 4 million active WazirX users are expected to suffer a loss of at least 43% of their funds due to the restructuring process. Frustrated by the lack of action from Indian authorities, many users have sought help from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was visiting Singapore at the time. Users took to social media to air their grievances and demand justice, urging the government to intervene. WazirX co-founder Nischal Shetty, who is based in Dubai, added to the confusion by stating that he does not know who is responsible for safeguarding user crypto funds on the platform. His statement has fueled outrage among users, who feel abandoned by the exchange’s management. Legal and ownership disputesAmid the chaos, WazirX is also battling a legal dispute over its ownership with Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. Shetty has repeatedly claimed that Binance acquired WazirX, granting it significant control over the platform's operations. However, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) refuted these claims in 2022, stating that the acquisition deal was never completed. The uncertainty surrounding the ownership of WazirX has further aggravated users, many of whom are demanding a clear statement from Binance. So far, Binance has remained silent, neither confirming nor denying its involvement. This ambiguity has intensified calls for clarification, with users fearing that a lack of transparency may worsen their chances of recovering their funds. Partial withdrawals and restructuring effortsIn response to the crisis, WazirX has initiated phased withdrawals for users, allowing them to access 66% of their Indian Rupee (INR) token balances. Initially set for September 9, the withdrawal window was moved forward, offering some relief to users. However, many are dissatisfied with the partial access to their funds and are questioning when full crypto withdrawals will resume. WazirX’s legal team has indicated that users may recover only 55% to 57% of their crypto holdings, sparking further discontent. Meanwhile, the exchange has filed a moratorium application in the Singapore High Court, seeking a six-month reprieve from legal actions as it works on a restructuring plan. Looking aheadAs the WazirX saga unfolds, the future of the exchange and its users remains uncertain. The legal battles, ownership disputes and the ongoing laundering of stolen assets pose significant challenges to the platform's recovery. For now, users can only hope that the restructuring process will bring them closer to recovering their lost funds and that authorities will step in to provide clarity and resolution.

Legislator calls for Bitcoin reserve in Hong Kong

In an interview with local media, Hong Kong legislator Johnny Ng called for the Chinese autonomous territory to implement a national Bitcoin reserve. Ng made the comments in a discussion with Hong Kong-based state-owned Chinese language media outlet, Wenweipo. The legislator believes that there is an opportunity for Hong Kong to take advantage of China’s “one country, two systems” approach to governance, which gives it the freedom to implement such a reserve despite mainland China remaining much less enthusiastic where Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are concerned.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashSpot Bitcoin ETF impactThe Hong Kong Legislative Council member suggested that as a first step, Hong Kong needs to assess the impact that spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States have had. Spot Bitcoin ETFs were launched in the U.S. in January. The leading spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT, provided by asset manager BlackRock, has achieved a growth rate five times faster than any other ETF launched in the past. El Salvador and the Kingdom of Bhutan are examples of nations that have made Bitcoin a significant component within their national reserves. A recent report suggests that El Salvador currently holds 6,000 Bitcoin which it purchased at an average price of $45,465. In November, Arkham Intelligence reported that Bhutan was holding Bitcoin with a dollar value which had exceeded $1 billion at that time. Ng also referred to a move by individual states in the U.S. towards holding Bitcoin as a reserve asset. In August, the state of Wisconsin increased its holdings of shares in BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT. Last month, the state of Pennsylvania introduced a bill to make Bitcoin a strategic asset. Ohio has proposed similar legislation while Alabama’s State Auditor, Andrew Sorrell, has suggested that his state should establish a Bitcoin reserve. Reducing price volatilityNg believes that furthering the Chinese autonomous territory’s dealings relative to Bitcoin could prove beneficial, given that Bitcoin has the potential to play a role in attracting more talent and investment to Hong Kong. Additionally, he feels that the development of Bitcoin reserves at state level could help in reducing the price volatility of the asset as it goes through the process of global adoption. The Hong Kong lawmaker also believes that there is an opportunity for the Chinese antonymous territory to benefit from first mover advantage, stating that “the value of Bitcoin will be more stable, causing more and more other countries to follow suit and reduce their holdings of traditional assets.” Ng's latest interview follows a similar comment he made on X in July, where he suggested that Bitcoin is worth considering as an official financial reserve for a country. David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, took to X stating: “Hong Kong making moves, SBR here we go. President Trump must make the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve his top priority the day he enters the White House.”In recent days, soundings from Japan and Russia suggested that neither of these countries was prepared to establish Bitcoin reserves. However, just like with the advent of the Bitcoin ETF in the U.S., following Trump’s expression of interest in the establishment of a strategic Bitcoin reserve, the level of consideration of the matter has increased considerably among governments around the world.
