In response to a White House fact sheet published on April 15 stating that China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the U.S., Niutanqin—a WeChat account affiliated with China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency—dismissed the claim as a “global joke” and a “word game.” The post argued that the figure is a combination of preexisting tariffs and new ones, suggesting there is no substantive change in policy. It also reiterated China’s earlier stance that further U.S. tariff hikes would be economically meaningless and ignored.
