SafePal invests in & partners with Switzerland’s Fiat24

Singaporean crypto wallet provider SafePal has announced a strategic investment in Swiss bank Fiat24, together with the launch of a number of financial services. The partnership is a significant milestone in bridging the gap between the crypto world and real-world financial utilities.

Visa card and in-app banking

The company outlined in a blog post on March 7 that the centerpiece of this collaboration is the introduction of a crypto-focused Visa card and in-app banking services, both designed to streamline the integration of digital assets into everyday transactions. The default deposit currency for these services is the dollar-pegged stablecoin USD Coin (USDC), providing users with a stable foundation for their financial activities.

 

Through the SafePal mobile wallet app, users can convert their cryptocurrency holdings into USDC via Ethereum layer two scaling network Arbitrum, making for an efficient and reliable process. Once converted, the USDC can be stored in multiple fiat currencies, including USD, EUR and CHF, enabling seamless utilization in various transactions and expenses.

 

Enabling Swiss bank account access

One of the standout aspects of this initiative is the opportunity for users to establish individually owned, fully compliant bank accounts directly within the SafePal mobile wallet app. By completing the necessary know-your-customer (KYC) and onboarding procedures through Fiat24.

 

Opening such bank accounts will be free, with no account creation or annual management fees being applied. However, transfer and deposit fees will be applied starting from a base rate of 0.6%. The project believes that the integration of NFT technology on Arbitrum will ensure the security and transparency of all related transactions.

 

Veronica Wong, CEO and co-founder of SafePal, emphasized the importance of addressing the accessibility challenges faced by crypto users in a communication with CoinDesk. She highlighted the significance of providing a crypto-friendly banking experience that eliminates the hurdles imposed by traditional financial institutions.

 

Additional payment platform partnerships

In addition to the crypto Visa cards, SafePal has forged partnerships with leading payment platforms such as Paypal, Google Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, expanding the usability and convenience of its services.

 

While the Visa card will initially be available in select European regions, plans are underway for its gradual expansion across the continent. Similarly, the in-app banking gateway will cater to users outside the United States and in non-U.S. sanctioned countries, fostering greater accessibility on a global scale.

 

Working towards market growth through a partnership strategy is a route that SafePal has taken in the past. In May 2023 the company attempted to make further inroads into the Korean market by partnering with South Korean enterprise blockchain project Klaytn. In that instance, the wallet provider added support for digital assets that run on the Klaytn network via its mobile app, hardware wallet and browser extension-based wallet.

 

In light of these developments, SafePal's SFP tokens have experienced a modest increase in value. At the time of writing, the token unit price stood at $0.8026, representing a 4.62% increase over the course of the past 24 hours.

OKX and HashKey plan partnership to promote industry development

The partnership will encompass various industry initiatives, including blockchain infrastructure development, product diversification and virtual asset investment education within the region. First regulated exchangeNotably, HashKey Group achieved a significant milestone last year by becoming the first Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC)-regulated crypto exchange authorized to serve retail users. The firm secured Type 1 and Type 7 licenses from the SFC, in line with the  "compliance first” approach the company is taking. Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Hong Kong, with operations in Singapore and Tokyo, HashKey Group caters to a diverse clientele, including retail investors, institutions, family offices, funds and professional investors. The services offered by the company encompass a Hong Kong SFC-regulated virtual asset exchange, global asset management and wealth management, with a focus on blockchain and digital assets, blockchain node validation, tokenization and Web3 incubation and community operations. Its Singaporean subsidiary, digital asset fund manager HashKey Capital, secured a regulatory license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in December. Unicorn statusOKX Ventures, the investment division of OKX, played a crucial role in supporting HashKey's Series A financing. That Series A funding round saw HashKey achieve unicorn status with a $1.2 billion valuation earlier this month. OKX Ventures focuses on investing in projects that nurture sustainable growth within the global virtual asset ecosystem. OKX, already serving over 50 million users worldwide, has a notable presence with sponsorships that include Manchester City FC in the English Premier League (EPL) and the McLaren Formula 1 racing team. Earlier this month, the company expanded its sponsorship with McLaren. The digital asset exchange began onboarding customers in Hong Kong a month before officially launching operations there, aligning with the city's new virtual asset service providers (VASPs) regime implemented on June 1 of last year. In March 2023, OKX established a Hong Kong entity to launch virtual asset services, with plans to apply for the virtual asset service provider (VASP) license and Type 1 & 7 licenses under the Securities and Futures Ordinance. Approval is anticipated by early 2024. The collaborative effort between HashKey Group and OKX marks a significant stride in advancing compliant virtual asset innovations in Hong Kong. This partnership aims to enhance service offerings and customer experiences, further solidifying Hong Kong's position as a regulated virtual asset industry hub. By leveraging their respective strengths, these industry leaders are well placed to assist in elevating Hong Kong's standing in the global virtual asset landscape, fostering growth and compliance in this rapidly evolving sector.

Huobi Rebrands as HTX to Mark Tenth AnniversaryIn a move marking its 10th anniversary, Seychelles-registered cryptocurrency exchange Huobi has decided to rebrand itself as “HTX.”Rebranding confusionIn crypto-centric discussions on social media, the decision has sparked controversy and raised eyebrows, drawing comparisons to the now-defunct exchange FTX.The announcement of Huobi’s rebranding to HTX was made on Wednesday. According to the company, the new name is a combination of symbolic elements. The “H” represents the first letter of “Huobi,” the “T” is a nod to Justin Sun’s blockchain project Tron, and the “X” stands for the exchange itself.Alternatively, some interpret “HT” as a reference to the exchange’s native Huobi Token (HT), while the “X” symbolizes the Roman numeral for 10, commemorating the company’s 10th anniversary. Huobi’s new slogan accompanying the rebranding is “HTX, Just Trade It.”Before the official announcement, Huobi changed its social media account names to align with the new brand. It didn’t help the firm that in August, rumors swirled that some of the company’s executives were subject to an investigation by Chinese authorities.This isn’t the first time a crypto-related entity has seemingly borrowed part of its name from FTX. In January, the founders of the collapsed cryptocurrency hedge fund Three Arrows Capital announced plans to raise $25 million for a proposed crypto exchange called “GTX.” Huobi’s rebrand has amused some FTX creditors who had faced criticism from some in the crypto sector for wanting to resurrect the business while maintaining the same branding.In early August, Huobi refuted reports suggesting insolvency and the arrest of senior executives by Chinese authorities. Additionally, the exchange had previously been ordered to cease operations in Malaysia following regulatory actions by the country’s securities regulator in May.International marketing effortHuobi’s rebranding to HTX has undoubtedly stirred debate and curiosity within the cryptocurrency community. Justin Sun, an advisor to the project, stated at a media briefing at Token 2049 in Singapore that the HTX brand will be marketed towards Huobi’s international English-speaking users.Sun said: “It’s very hard for foreigners, Westerners, to pronounce ‘Huobi’… It doesn’t make any sense to them,” Sun said, explaining that the word Huobi means fire and coin in Chinese. “That’s why we rebranded as HTX for international branding.”As the crypto industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this new identity will impact Huobi’s reputation and standing in the market. Regardless, the crypto world is known for its surprises, and Huobi’s marketing move serves as a reminder that the industry is in constant flux, filled with unexpected developments.
