Combining CEX and DEX qualities

Pronounced “gravity,” GRVT is an innovative platform that attempts to seamlessly blend the advantages of centralized and decentralized exchanges. It promises users a Robinhood-like experience while integrating self-custodial features akin to Uniswap-style exchanges. Matter Labs, the developer brains behind zkSync, shared news of GRVT's imminent project milestone in an interview with The Block.

The introduction of GRVT as the first Hyperchain within the zkSync ecosystem has broadened the horizons of potential applications for this technology, according to Matter Labs. The project stated:

“There is nothing like GRVT being built, not in the zkSync ecosystem nor outside of it. By being able to design and deploy custom hyperchains connected through hyperbridges, teams like GRVT’s can build entirely new use cases.”

The ability to design and deploy custom hyperchains connected via hyperbridges opens the door to entirely new use cases, affording projects like GRVT the freedom to explore innovative possibilities.

A layer 3 Validium

GRVT will play a role as a Layer 3 Validium within the zkSync ecosystem. Validiums are Ethereum scaling networks that bear similarities to zk-rollups found in Layer 2 solutions. The critical differentiator is in how they handle data. Zk-rollups maintain data on-chain, whereas Validiums securely store it off-chain. This approach enhances user security by safeguarding against front-running and market manipulation.

GRVT’s alpha version is set to make its debut next month, followed by the mainnet release in the first quarter of the upcoming year. Promising a transaction speed of up to 600,000 trades per second and less than two milliseconds of latency, GRVT leverages zkSync’s “horizontally scaling” infrastructure to deliver enhanced performance.

Explaining the concept of horizontally scaling, Hong Yea, GRVT’s co-founder and CEO, told The Block:

“Horizontally scaling means to deploy additional underlying pairs as new hyperchains. Say BTC/USDT perpetual futures is one hyperchain and so on. And we can look to add other infrastructure components like this as new hyperchains to scale throughout, as they can interoperate. This allows high-frequency traders to trade more efficiently with high transactions per second similar to a central exchange.”

Token launch

GRVT enjoys the backing of CMS Holdings, Hong Kong’s digital assets wealth manager Metalpha, alongside Matter Labs and others. Yea founded the company alongside CTO Aaron Ong and CCO Matthew Quek. Although incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, the firm employs people who are based in Hong Kong, the UK, Lithuania, and Singapore.

It recently disclosed that it had successfully raised $7.1 million in pre-seed and seed funding in an equity with a token warrant round, achieving a $39 million post-money valuation. The launch of GRVT’s token is anticipated in 2024.

GRVT is also making a concerted effort to obtain trading licenses in various jurisdictions. Currently, it has attained a virtual asset service provider (VASP) license in Lithuania, with work ongoing to achieve licensing in Bermuda. The firm hopes to then expand in Europe and the Middle East going forward.

Myanmar Government in Exile Backs Crypto Bank Launch

Myanmar Government in Exile Backs Crypto Bank LaunchMyanmar is on the cusp of a financial revolution as the National Unity Government (NUG), the country’s exiled shadow government, introduces the Spring Development Bank (SDB), a crypto-based financial institution. With a mission to bestow long-awaited financial freedom and digitized sophistication upon the nation’s citizens, the SDB aspires to reshape Myanmar’s financial landscape.Built on PolygonThe bank derives its name from the Spring Revolution, an opposition movement that bravely challenges the ruling military junta. The goal of the SDB is to bring “freedom and democracy to the 55 million citizens of Myanmar,” a lofty ambition that reflects the NUG’s determination to empower its people through innovative means.Constructed on the Polygon Network, the SDB aims to revolutionize domestic and international payments, making them faster and more efficient. But the bank’s vision extends beyond just payments. Following a recent press conference, bank officials revealed plans to offer a diverse range of financial products, including fixed deposits, currency exchange services, cross-country remittances, and even digital gold savings options.Reaching the Burmese diasporaNotably, the SDB’s reach extends beyond Myanmar’s borders to the two-million-strong Burmese diaspora residing abroad. This diaspora frequently sends money back to their homeland, but the current remittance fees can soar as high as 30%. The bank intends to alleviate this burden, reducing the costs associated with sending money back to Myanmar. The Spring Development Bank operates under the licensing and regulation of the Interim Central Bank of Myanmar, which is under the control of the NUG. U Calvin, the bank’s CEO, emphasized that this launch marks the initial step towards restoring financial independence to Myanmar. The bank’s emergence comes amid Myanmar’s complex relationship with cryptocurrencies. While there is no specific legislation addressing cryptocurrencies, the Central Bank of Myanmar issued a ban on them in 2020, and the military junta later proposed a cybersecurity law that criminalized their usage in January 2022.Photo by Dan Gold on UnsplashJuly soft launchA soft launch of the SDB is scheduled for July 22, with 1,000 private beta users and 100 relationship managers. The bank expects to achieve a full launch in late August, with the goal of attracting 100,000 active users within the first six months of operation.Despite these regulatory challenges, Myanmar’s people have turned to cryptocurrencies as an escape from their dire financial situation. Since the February 2021 coup, the country’s economy has suffered significantly, with the World Bank estimating an alarming 18% annual contraction. Fading trust in the traditional banking system, controlled by the military, has further crippled the financial market. The Myanmar kyat (MMK) plummeted to an all-time low of 2,200 against the US dollar (USD) in September 2021, down from 1,330 in February 2020 (currently 1 USD = 2,100 MMK).The SDB’s arrival signals a glimmer of hope amidst these trying times, offering a beacon of financial opportunity for the citizens of Myanmar. With the support of the NUG, the bank is looking to take an innovative approach to better serve Burmese citizens, both at home and abroad.

Animoca Brands Remains Bullish on Blockchain Gaming

Animoca Brands Remains Bullish on Blockchain GamingBlockchain-based games have gained significant attention within the cryptocurrency space, witnessing remarkable growth and daily activity across various protocols despite challenging market conditions. Hong Kong-based Animoca Brands, the Web3 and metaverse company, recently pronounced its bullishness where blockchain gaming is concerned. In 2022 alone, Web3 gaming attracted approximately $4.5 billion in funding, as asset managers, investment funds, and venture capitalists sought to capitalize on the flourishing sector. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Yat Siu, Co-Founder of Animoca Brands, expressed the company’s renewed optimism in the blockchain gaming sector and provided an update on its eagerly anticipated metaverse fund, which made headlines in late 2022.Photo by julien Tromeur on UnsplashAnimoca’s metaverse fundThe metaverse fund, originally planned to have a budget of up to $2 billion in November 2022, aimed to invest in mid to late-stage startups focused on developing metaverse products and experiences. However, due to recent volatility affecting the cryptocurrency space, Animoca Brands scaled back its investment target to $1 billion in January 2023. Reports in March suggested a further reduction to $800 million. While awaiting the required license to launch the metaverse fund, Siu emphasized that Animoca Brands has been actively investing in early-stage startups through its venture arm, with additional investments directly from the company’s balance sheet. Currently, the company boasts a portfolio of over 450 companies.AAA blockchain games anticipatedDespite the challenges, Siu anticipates the release of several “AAA” blockchain games, in which Animoca Brands has made investments, by the end of 2023 or early 2024. Titi Financial Announces $TITI Airdrop

Titi Financial Announces $TITI AirdropTiti Financial, the team behind Titi Protocol, a project that aims to further its $TiUSD algorithmic stablecoin, announced that it is currently distributing the first round of airdrops of its $TITI governance token.Taking to social media, the Singapore-based project encouraged interested parties to check their eligibility for the airdrop on the project’s website. In a Medium blog post, the project stated: “In order to give back to the users who have supported us all the way, TiTi protocol has decided to conduct the first round of airdrops to community users.”An algorithmic stablecoinTiTi Protocol is a decentralized, 100% collateral-backed, ‘use-to-earn’ algorithmic stablecoin. It aims to provide diversified and decentralized financial services based on the crypto-native stablecoin system, with an autonomous monetary policy.Alongside $TITI as the project’s governance token, $TiUSD is the accompanying stablecoin issued by TiTi Protocol.Initial DEX offering (IDO)The airdrop runs until May 9. Once that process has been completed, the project intends to launch on mainnet through an initial DEX offering (IDO). IDO volume will be 10 million $TITI, 1% of total issuance, with an initial price per token of $0.06.Launching on the Ethereum blockchain, the IDO commences on May 10, with the sale running until 8:00 UTC on May 13. Buyers have until 08:00 UTC on May 14 to claim their tokens. Total token supply has been set at 1,000,000,000 $TITI. Purchase amount parameters have been set, with a minimum to maximum range extending from $100 to $3,000. The $TITI token can be purchased using USDC, USDT or DAI stablecoin. The project has advised participants to prepare by having an Ethereum compatible wallet available, such as MetaMask, Gnosis Safe or WalletConnect.$3.5 million fund raiseLast month, the project disclosed that it had been successful in raising $3.5 million in funding. The funding round was led by California-based Spartan Group, a blockchain advisory and asset management firm. Other venture investors included SevenX Ventures, Incuba Alpha, DeFi Alliance, Agnostic Fund, Fourth Revolution Capital and Solidity Venture. A number of individual investors associated with Alpha Venture DAO and 0x1b from Fold Finance also participated.Overcoming algorithmic design shortcomingsIt’s interesting to see a renewed interest in algorithmic stablecoins after the epic collapse of Terra Luna in 2022. Additionally, it’s noteworthy that an institutional investment appetite exists given that backdrop. Lead investor Spartan Group cited the depegging risk alongside poor liquidity as being a known problem where algorithmic stablecoins are concerned. However, the investor believes that the Titi Protocol has the necessary design elements incorporated to counteract these issues. One of the key features of the protocol is that liquidity providers only need to provide single sided liquidity to Titi automated market makers (AMMs). The protocol itself covers the other side of that process, doing the math to mint the equivalent value of TiUSD.In April, the project also announced a partnership with Alpha Venture DAO. The decentralized venture capital fund is financed by its own community. Furthermore, Titi Finance can call on the expertise and skills of the DAOs members.Photo by CoinWire Japan on Unsplash
