Tracking carbon emissions

Today, Hyundai Motor and Kia, two affiliates of the group, have introduced the Supplier CO2 Emission Monitoring System (SCEMS), a carbon emission tracking solution based on blockchain technology. This system marks a pivotal step towards intensifying their efforts to reduce carbon emissions across their extensive supply chain.

The SCEMS is designed to record and manage carbon footprints at every stage of the manufacturing process, starting from the extraction of raw materials to the production and delivery of parts and vehicles. This comprehensive approach allows Hyundai and Kia to gain better control over their carbon reduction initiatives.

The urgency of addressing climate change has made it essential for organizations of all sizes to manage and decrease their carbon emissions. However, calculating carbon footprints requires an understanding of complex standards and intricate mathematical processes.

Supply chain

To address these challenges, Hyundai Motor and Kia are providing the SCEMS to hundreds of their suppliers free of charge, offering them the necessary tools to effectively curb carbon emissions. The SCEMS employs artificial intelligence modeling, which automatically computes carbon emissions and predicts future projections as suppliers from various industries input their data into the system.

Previously, these suppliers had to rely on external experts to perform such calculations. By adopting Hyundai’s new system, suppliers can now independently set their carbon reduction goals and efficiently manage their activities, thereby cutting costs and enhancing their competencies.

Incorporating blockchain

Moreover, Hyundai Motor and Kia anticipate that the incorporation of blockchain technology into their operations will bolster the reliability of their data, increasing their credibility among global evaluators of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management.

A Hyundai official emphasized that the scope of eco-friendly products now encompasses their entire lifecycles and supply chains. The company aims to lead the charge in building a sustainable and green supply chain.

In line with this commitment, Hyundai Motor and Kia in February joined the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) Supply Chain Program, a nonprofit organization that oversees a global disclosure system for investors, companies, and regions to manage their environmental impacts. As part of this initiative, the Hyundai affiliates have also provided education to their suppliers to aid them in achieving carbon neutrality.

Under the CDP’s Supply Chain Program, Hyundai affiliates’ suppliers need to submit data on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, along with carbon neutrality strategies, sustainability objectives, and renewable energy transition plans to the nonprofit organization.

Binance partners with Bhutan on tourism payment system

The government of Bhutan, the Buddhist kingdom nestled in the Himalayas, has partnered with cryptocurrency payment service Binance Pay to launch the world’s first national-level crypto tourism payment system. In a recent blog post, Binance outlined details of the collaboration. Alongside the government and Binance, Bhutanese digital bank DK Bank will also play a role. The payment system enables international visitors to Bhutan who also happen to be Binance account holders to pay for a range of services within the kingdom.Photo by Mariia Shalabaieva on UnsplashFacilitating spending of over 100 cryptosUsing the Binance app, tourists visiting Bhutan can use dynamic or static QR codes in order to complete secure transactions via participating merchants in real time. The system supports users in spending over 100 cryptocurrencies to pay for goods or services, including hotel stays, tour guides and entrance fees to touristic sites. Payment using these digital assets will be settled instantly in Bhutan’s sovereign currency, the Ngultrum (BTN), with that settlement facilitated by DK Bank. Binance also asserted that the initiative facilitates inclusion and innovation by enabling small businesses in remote areas to accept crypto and in that way, to go digital. Bridging ‘cultures and economies’Binance CEO Richard Teng said that the initiative not only advances the use of crypto in the tourism sector, it also sets a precedent for “how technology can bridge cultures and economies.” Teng added:“This initiative exemplifies our commitment to innovation and our belief in a future where digital finance empowers global connectivity and enriches travel experiences.” Damcho Rinzin is also of the opinion that the initiative adds value beyond just being a tourism-related payment system. He stated:“This is more than a payment solution – it’s a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience.” Binance described the new payment system as the first of its kind to offer end-to-end crypto-based payments at a national level, in a fully integrated manner. It added that previous systems established elsewhere had limitations and that by offering real-time confirmations, near-zero fees and a regulatory-compliant bank handling settlements, this system overcomes past limitations. Early adopterWhile Bhutan appears to have established a world-first with this system, it is no stranger to being innovative related to crypto. The kingdom has amassed a Bitcoin holding with a value in excess of $1 billion. It has collaborated with Bitcoin miner and Bitcoin mining equipment manufacturer Bitdeer on crypto-related ventures. In January it was announced that the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a special administrative region within Bhutan, is moving forward with plans to hold Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB, a digital asset that was created by Binance back in 2017, within its strategic reserve. Bhutan’s early interest in crypto hadn’t gone unnoticed by Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ). Last November, CZ commented on the X social media platform, in response to the news that Bhutan had accumulated in excess of $1 billion in Bitcoin, that many countries will use Bitcoin as a strategic asset going forward. The following month he visited the kingdom, meeting with the King of Bhutan.  During a panel discussion at Token2049 in Dubai in April, CZ commented that Bhutan is already advanced in its efforts to implement a national Bitcoin strategic reserve.

Superscrypt Backs Airstack’s Web3 Developer PlatformSingapore-based Superscrypt, an early stage blockchain investment company founded by state-owned global investment conglomerate Temasek, has led an investment round into Web3 developer platform, Airstack.Photo by Giorgio Trovato on UnsplashIndian influenceAirstack closed out the second tranche of its pre-seed funding round, having raised the largest portion of the $7 million raise via Superscrypt. Although based in Miami Beach, Florida, Airstack has a strong Indian influence. Three of its five founders, Deepesh Kumar, Vysakh Nair and Sarvesh Jain originate from the world’s most populous country. The firm’s main offering is to enable developers to be able to easily query on and off-chain data and integrate that same data into the Web3 apps that they are building. Airstack enables this functionality by featuring GraphQL, a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries with the user’s existing data, as a core component of its platform.Achieving greater functionality still, the start-up enhances that use of GraphQL by incorporating the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The company’s Miami Beach-based CEO and Co-Founder, Jason Goldberg, elaborated on the technology it is using in an interview with CoinDesk: “We did extensive interviews with developers over the past year, gaining insights into their previous tool usage and the challenges they faced. Airstack was built to directly address those pain points.”Recent platform launchThe product offering was launched last month and has already lured in over two hundred developers to use the platform. Those developers are harnessing the functionality of Airstack’s platform to assist them in their efforts to bring a broad range of dApps to market.Developer projects are grounded in areas such as marketing engines, decentralized finance (DeFi) portfolio optimizers, customer resource management tools, advertising platforms, and decentralized social media apps, together with messaging applications. With just a straightforward query and response approach, developers can use Airstack platform functionality to query, combine, and integrate on-chain or off-chain, cross-chain, and cross-application data. The offering applies to queries relative to the Ethereum and Polygon blockchain networks. The project intends to support additional blockchain networks going forward, while also intending to increase the level of query complexity made available to platform users.Joining Superscrypt on the Airstack cap table are Hashed Emergent, NGC, Primal Capital, UOB Ventures, Signum Capital, and others. Goldberg articulated the firm’s strategy going forward: “Our immediate focus is to onboard thousands of developers onto Airstack in the coming months. We aim to identify the areas where we add the most value and where genuine business use cases emerge before finalizing our pricing model.”Social app upgradeAt the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status. That functionality can be extended further, so that data can be gathered across projects, creating bespoke user profiles relative to the user’s blockchain activity and presence. At the same time as this funding announcement, Airstack also revealed a separate development related to its Jam social app. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Goldberg provided details on an update to the app which utilizes Airstack functionality in order to create social groups based on NFT ownership and collector status.
