Crypto boom drives $17.5B surge in demand deposit at Korean banks

Markets·March 06, 2024, 8:20 AM

Among various accounts within a bank, a demand deposit account is considered a “station” where people can temporarily store their money and easily withdraw it for future investments. These accounts are highly liquid, since users can deposit or withdraw funds at any time without having to pay a penalty to a bank.

Following the recent cryptocurrency boom, the five major banks in Korea – KB Kookmin Bank, Shinhan Bank, Hana Bank, Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank – are seeing a significant influx of funds into their demand deposit accounts, according to local media outlet Money Today. This is partly attributed to an increasing number of youths who are seeking to invest in crypto assets, parking their money in these banks’ demand deposit accounts. Shinhan Bank and Nonghyup Bank have seen the highest increase in their deposits, owing to their affiliation with local crypto exchanges that have access to real-name accounts from these banks.

BTC’s surge attracting young investors to crypto

Experts say that these deposits could be potentially transferred to the crypto market by owners as Bitcoin’s value continues to climb. An insider from a crypto exchange noted that the bullish crypto market, spurred by the U.S. approval of spot bitcoin ETFs, is driving a number of young investors to turn to crypto investments, encouraging them to channel their deposits into buying crypto tokens.

Data from these five major banks shows their total demand deposits by the end of February exceeded KRW 614 trillion ($460 billion), seeing a month-over-month increase of about KRW 23.5 trillion. During the same period, the banks’ combined regular savings grew by KRW 23.6 trillion, while their combined installment savings saw a decrease of KRW 13.3 trillion. This came after the government-led savings product “Youth Hope Installment Savings” reached its maturity, which returns users their principal with relatively large interest gains.

Banks scrambling to attract crypto investors with new savings products

In response to the potential decline in interest rates in the second half of this year, an increasing number of customers are seeking to put their money into savings products with an interest rate of as low as 3%, according to a banker. In a bid to attract more users, local banks are busy introducing new savings products.

KB Kookmin Bank launched a savings product offering a relatively high annual interest rate of up to 4%, and Shinhan Bank rolled out a savings product targeting youths with an annual interest rate of up to 3.85%.

Meanwhile, Kbank, an online-only bank, is deemed among the largest beneficiaries of the crypto boom, as the bank saw its average daily new customers triple compared to last year. Since 2020, Kbank has served as the provider of real-name accounts to Upbit, the leading crypto exchange in Korea.

Ha Joon-kyung, a professor at the Department of Economics at Hanyang University, said the sudden surge in demand deposits means that a significant portion of these funds will be invested in high-yielding but risky assets, including cryptocurrencies, stocks and real estate.

Japan’s HashPort Group Raises $8.5M in Funding Round

Japan’s HashPort Group Raises $8.5M in Funding RoundHashPort, a leading blockchain developer based in Japan, has successfully raised 1.2 billion Japanese yen (approximately $8.5 million) in a Series C funding round. The funding was secured through key investors, including Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), The University of Tokyo, Edge Capital Partners, and Japanese billionaire entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa. With this latest infusion of capital, HashPort’s total funding has now reached an impressive 2 billion yen (about $14.2 million).Global expansion plansThe announcement, which was made on Friday, revealed that these fresh funds will be instrumental in driving HashPort’s global expansion plans, particularly in the face of complex regulatory environments. The company aims to fortify its business operations and establish a robust compliance management system, essential for navigating the intricate web of global regulations. At the core of HashPort’s ecosystem are two significant components. The first is its namesake blockchain-related consulting and system solution, which has gained substantial recognition in Japan. The second is HashPalette, a public chain specially designed for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), tapping into the booming NFT market. Additionally, HashPort is set to unveil an exciting metaverse game called The Land Elf Crossing in the upcoming fourth quarter.Coincheck collaborationHashPort’s previous collaboration with Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck garnered considerable attention. Together, they launched Japan’s first initial exchange offering (IEO), which raised an impressive 22.45 billion yen (approximately $160 million) in commitments for the Palette (PLT) token. As a testament to the success of this venture, PLT Place, the official NFT marketplace of Palette Chain, now boasts over 370,000 users.President Seihaku Yoshida expressed HashPort’s future ambitions, revealing plans to cooperate with Expo 2025, a highly anticipated event scheduled to take place in Osaka. HashPort aims to develop digital wallets and digital passports linked to soulbound tokens (SBTs) for Expo 2025. With an estimated 28 million visitors expected to attend the expo, the company sees this as a historic opportunity to introduce Web3 technology to a broader audience.Soulbound tokensIn December 2022, one of HashPort’s current investors, SMBC, joined forces with the company to explore the potential applications of SBTs. Proposed by Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin, SBTs represent the characteristics or reputation of individuals or entities, much like the concept of soulbound items in the popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), World of Warcraft. As part of that collaboration, SMBC and HashPort were discussing the possibility of creating a “safe and secure Web3 economic zone.” No further details were given beyond that, but the idea may have been along the lines of creating something like Cyberport, an innovative digital community which has been created in Hong Kong, featuring over 1,900 start-ups and technology companies. The successful funding round marks a significant milestone for HashPort, providing the necessary financial resources to accelerate its expansion plans and drive innovation in the Web3 space. As the company continues to pioneer advancements in the blockchain and NFT sectors, its collaboration with Expo 2025 and ongoing exploration of SBTs showcase the company’s efforts in attempting to contribute towards shaping the future of decentralized technologies.

Bitget Report Finds Gen Z Dominates Crypto Copy Trading

Bitget Report Finds Gen Z Dominates Crypto Copy TradingA recent report by Bitget, the Seychelles-headquartered crypto exchange, sheds light on the growing trend of copy trading among younger investors, particularly Gen Z.Photo by rc.xyz NFT gallery on Unsplash44% under 25The report, released on Thursday, reveals that an impressive 44% of all copy traders on the platform are under the age of 25, indicating a strong inclination among this generation towards this type of investment and trading strategy.Copy trading, or social trading, involves emulating the trading activities of established investors. Bitget’s findings indicate that the younger demographic is more receptive to this approach, with individuals aged 25 to 35 constituting just under one-third of all copy traders. Comparatively, individuals aged 35 to 55 represented 17% of copy traders, while those over 55 constituted a mere 7%.Reliance on influencersInterestingly, this trend aligns with Generation Z’s penchant for seeking advice from social media influencers. Bitget’s report highlights that Gen Z’s tendency to turn to these influencers for investment decisions could be a driving factor behind their affinity for copy trading.A survey by Forbes Advisor in January found that approximately 80% of both Gen Z and millennials rely on financial advice from social media platforms. Notably, platforms like YouTube, Reddit, and TikTok have gained their trust, with half of the respondents claiming to have profited from advice received. The report also reinforces crypto’s status as the preferred investment choice among Gen Z. A joint study by the CFA Institute and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Foundation in May revealed that crypto was the most popular investment option for Gen Z in the United States, a striking 44% of Gen Z investors initiated their investment journey with cryptocurrencies, surpassing the 35% of millennials who did the same.Geographical differencesThe trend extends beyond the US, with 43% of British and 35% of Canadian Gen Z investors indicating crypto as their inaugural investment.Geographically, Bitget’s report showcases intriguing patterns among its copy-trading user base. While nearly a third of users hail from Western Europe, almost half originate from East or Southeast Asia. This distribution highlights the global reach of the platform and the appeal of copy trading across diverse regions.Of note, despite constituting only 1% of Bitget’s global copy traders, a remarkable 62% of African users expressed interest in copy trading. This proportion stands as the highest among all regions surveyed, reflecting a growing appetite for innovative investment methods on the African continent.Bitget’s report underscores the evolving landscape of investment practices, with Generation Z at the forefront of embracing new approaches like copy trading. It also builds on prior initiatives and research undertaken by the firm. In May Bitget launched a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project titled “Blockchain4Youth.” That initiative revealed that Bitget understands that the younger generation is where the greatest opportunity for mass market adoption lies for crypto and Web3.As the influence of social media on financial decisions continues to rise, the crypto industry may see further shifts in investment patterns and strategies among different demographic groups.
