First Toyota vehicle in Bolivia purchased with USDT as inflation bites

Web3 & Enterprise·September 23, 2025, 6:30 AM

In a first for Bolivia, Japanese automaker Toyota saw one of its vehicles purchased with the stablecoin USDT, according to a recent X post by digital asset trust company BitGo. The transaction underscores growing cryptocurrency adoption in the Latin American country, which is grappling with soaring inflation and a shortage of U.S. dollars.

The transaction was facilitated by a partnership between Toyosa (the official Toyota distributor in Bolivia), BitGo, and Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin. The sale highlights the increasing use of digital assets for commercial and retail payments, as the global stablecoin market cap recently reached an all-time high of $293 billion at the time of publication.

Confirming the milestone, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated on the social media platform X that, in addition to Toyota, the USDT stablecoin is now also accepted by distributors of BYD and Yamaha vehicles in Bolivia.

Crypto use surges amid inflation and dollar shortage

The development comes as Bolivia faces 25% inflation, the highest in 34 years. With the local economy under pressure, many Bolivians are moving their money into cryptocurrencies in an effort to protect their savings, according to Bloomberg. U.S. dollars have become increasingly scarce. Unofficial exchange rates have jumped to 14 bolivianos per dollar, nearly twice the government's rate. That gap is pushing people toward stablecoins like USDT, which are easier to access and hold their value. The shift is already showing up in payment trends. Digital transactions surged more than fivefold in the first half of 2025, reaching nearly $300 million.

Regional adoption and Toyota’s blockchain push

The rise in crypto use in Bolivia is part of a broader shift across Latin America. According to a recent report from analytics firm Chainalysis, crypto adoption in the region jumped from 53% to 63% in the 12 months ending June 2025. The only region to outpace this growth was Asia-Pacific, which saw a 69% year-over-year increase. El Salvador stands as another prominent example in the region, having adopted Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender in September 2021 and currently holding over 6,300 BTC in its treasury.

Separately, Toyota Motor Corporation has been actively exploring applications for blockchain technology. In March, its subsidiary Toyota Financial Services, in collaboration with Daiwa Securities and MUFG Bank, launched its first security token bonds on Progmat, a platform founded by MUFG with backing from other big banks like Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) and Mizuho. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the Toyota Group’s ties with individual investors and supporting the growth of the digital bond market.

Hong Kong’s GSBN Takes Lead in Blockchain Logistics

Hong Kong’s GSBN Takes Lead in Blockchain LogisticsIn recent years, the logistics industry has seen an increase in the use of blockchain technology to streamline supply chains and provide greater transparency to customers. While some major players, like Danish firm Maersk, have terminated their blockchain-based platforms, others are bullish on the long-term potential of the technology.©Pexels/Ben CheungA blockchain-based shipping platformOne such player is the Hong Kong-based Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), a nonprofit consortium focused on blockchain trade applications. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, GSBN operates one of the world’s largest platforms as an alternative to Maersk’s TradeLens tool. Since launching its blockchain-based shipping platform in 2021, GSBN has partnered with major shipping companies and terminal operators such as Cosco, Orient Overseas Container Line, Hapag-Lloyd, Hutchison Ports, SPG Qingdao Port, PSA International, Shanghai International Port Group, and Cosco Shipping Ports. The platform, based on a permissioned blockchain with strong data governance, allows only authorized parties to contribute and consume shipping-related data. The organization believes that blockchain is a crucial logistics tool in the long term, and its adoption may take another decade.Blockchain inevitable amid continued digitizationGSBN CEO Bertrand Chen is confident in the potential of blockchain technology, saying that global trade will not continue to rely on “pen and paper” by 2032. He believes that blockchain has the potential to help the industry transform in response to supply issues triggered by events such as COVID-19.“Because of COVID-19, because you have to change the process, I think this is one of the regular use cases of blockchain” . . . “Probably that’s better than NFTs of digital art. NFTs of documents for global trade — this will be the real killer use case.”While Chen acknowledges that China has taken the lead in blockchain logistics due to its significant investment in the industry, he believes that GSBN has global ambitions and is working to attract more European shipping lines. The nonprofit even hopes to onboard Maersk one day, but Chen admits that such a scenario “may be slightly challenging.”Emerging Web3 hubHong Kong has also emerged as a major hub for Web3 and cryptocurrency, with the local government taking action to adopt clear industry regulations. Despite a blanket ban on crypto in China, some Chinese government-related firms have reportedly been growing interested in crypto investment, with state-owned firms like insurer CPIC launching crypto-related funds in early April.Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize global trade and supply chain management, providing greater transparency and efficiency. However, widespread adoption may still be years away, and companies will need to navigate regulatory and technical challenges to fully leverage the benefits of blockchain. While some logistics firms may have terminated their blockchain-based projects, others like GSBN remain optimistic about the potential of blockchain technology in global trade. With major shipping partners and terminal operators already onboard, GSBN has a solid foundation to build on as it continues to attract more players to its platform. As the world becomes increasingly digitized, blockchain may be a crucial tool for the logistics industry to transform and adapt to new challenges.

In addition, the firm has followed up on March 4 with the publication of financial results for Q4 2023.Photo by Thought Catalog on UnsplashSealminer A1The company revealed on X that its inaugural crypto mining chip, known as the SEAL01, destined to drive the Sealminer A1 mining rig, was engineered utilizing four-nanometer process technology, a feat achieved in collaboration with a semiconductor fabricator. Bitdeer boasts that this chip exhibits a power efficiency ratio of 18.1 J/TH. At the heart of Bitdeer's latest achievement lies the SEAL01 chip, the culmination of years of dedicated research and development. By harnessing state-of-the-art technology and meticulous planning, Bitdeer aims to tackle the pressing challenges confronting Bitcoin miners, including skyrocketing operational costs and environmental implications. The company claims that the efficiency of the SEAL01 chip not only promises a shift towards more sustainable mining practices but also holds the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption, thereby bolstering profitability and return on investment for miners. "This powerful chip offers enhanced Bitcoin mining performance with minimized power consumption, leading to lower operating costs and a reduced environmental footprint for miners," Bitdeer affirmed in the X post. The firm stopped short of disclosing the launch timeline for its upcoming mining rig. On the financial front, Bitdeer disclosed its financial results for Q4 2023, on March 4. The company reported a total of 111,966,634 outstanding ordinary shares as of Dec. 31, 2023, including class A and class V ordinary shares. Additionally, Bitdeer revealed key operational metrics for Q4 2023, including total Bitcoin mined, power usage across its mining data centers, average cost of electricity and miner efficiency. Bitdeer's shares closed up 2.11% at $6.76 on Nasdaq on Friday, indicating a positive market response to its recent newly developed Bitcoin mining chip. However, trading outside regular hours, going into March 4, have seen the share price peak at $7.52, yet having retraced to $6.9 at the time of writing. As mining activities continue to gain traction and market dynamics evolve, the adaptability of hardware solutions becomes paramount. Bitdeer's strategic emphasis on innovation with the SEAL01 chip aims to pave the way for future advancements in cryptocurrency mining technology, ultimately fostering the growth and sustainability of the industry. Moreover, Bitdeer asserts that the newly developed chip enables it to optimize efficiency, stability and performance in anticipation of the upcoming Bitcoin halving event slated for April. Last month, the company’s founder Jihan Wu was installed as CEO, in a move that is understood to better position the company as it transitions to a growth phase.
