Reuters: Coinbase already knows about customer data breach in January

Crypto exchange Coinbase was informed as early as January that its customer data had been leaked through an outsourcing company, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. An India-based employee of TaskUs, a U.S. outsourcing firm for Coinbase, is suspected to have secretly filmed her work computer and handed over customer information to hackers in exchange for bribes. The discovery was immediately reported to Coinbase, which has since fired hundreds of employees involved in the incident.
In a disclosure filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in May, Coinbase stated that the exchange has been aware of contractors viewing employee data "without business need" in recent months. However, Coinbase did not recognize this as part of a broader hack until it received an extortion demand on May 11.
