Crypto adoption surge

The report, the fifteenth such report produced by KuCoin as part of this series, reveals that there has been a substantial surge in crypto adoption among Turkish adults, with an impressive 52% of the adult population participating in crypto investments.

Since November 2021 there has been a 12% increase in the number of crypto investors aged 18 to 60. These statistics underscore the growing interest and acceptance of cryptocurrencies in Turkey. It’s not likely to be a coincidence that this surge in adoption has come about against the backdrop of the local currency, the Turkish lira, losing more than 50% of its value against the US dollar.

Here are some of the key insights that the report identified:

Growing Crypto Adoption Among Turkish Adults: The survey indicates a significant upswing in the number of Turkish adults investing in cryptocurrencies. The percentage of adults embracing crypto has surged from 40% to 52% over the last year and a half, despite the overall crypto market finding itself in the doldrums within that time frame.

Increased Female Participation: While male investors continue to dominate at a rate of 57%, the survey points to a notable trend of increasing participation among women, particularly in the younger age brackets. Approximately 47% of female crypto investors are between the ages of 18 and 30.

Youth-Driven Growth: Younger generations are leading the crypto adoption charge, with investors aged 31 to 44 constituting the largest group at 48%. Furthermore, a significant proportion of investors under 30 joined the market within the past year, indicating the influence of youth within the crypto space.

Many have expressed the view that crypto adoption will come about through the younger demographic. It’s a factor that has not gone unnoticed by crypto platforms, including fellow Seychelles-based exchange Bitget.

Motivations for Crypto Investments: The report delves into the motivations behind crypto investments among Turkish adults. A substantial 58% express the desire to create long-term wealth, transcending generational boundaries. This suggests a widespread belief in crypto’s potential as a tool for financial freedom.

Popular Cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin remains a favored choice, capturing 71% of overall investor interest. Ethereum follows closely with 45% interest, while stablecoins garnered the attention of 33% of surveyed participants.

Crypto Trading Dominates: A significant 70% of Turkish participants use crypto for trading, indicating the prevalent use of cryptocurrencies as investment instruments. Meanwhile, 22% have ventured into buying NFTs.

Influence of Personal Connections: Personal relationships play a pivotal role in driving crypto adoption in Turkey. About 57% of participants learned about crypto through family and friends, highlighting the significance of these connections in introducing newcomers to the crypto world.

This finding resonates with a similar finding relative to a recently published report covering crypto adoption in Vietnam.

The report has been based upon online surveys carried out by KuCoin between May 5 and May 12 of this year.

U.S. seizes web domains tied to Burma-based crypto investment fraud ring

The U.S. Department of Justice said on Dec. 2 that it had seized the web domain tickmilleas.com, which was used to facilitate cryptocurrency investment fraud (CIF) schemes, adding to two others seized last month as part of actions against the same Burma-based network. According to the announcement, the domains were operated by scammers based in Kyaukhat, Burma, who presented the site as a legitimate investment platform in order to solicit deposits from victims.Photo by Markus Spiske on UnsplashPromises of high returns as baitVictims who reported the activity to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) indicated that the recently seized website displayed fabricated investment returns and showed purported deposits credited to their online accounts. These figures appeared during guided walkthroughs of falsified trades, creating the appearance of a functioning platform. The Justice Department said the domain seizures are among the first actions taken since it established its first district-level CIF strike force, known as the Scam Center Strike Force, three weeks earlier. The unit operates under the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. According to the DOJ, the group behind the scheme is known as the Tai Chang scam compound. The network is described as being affiliated with the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) in Burma, Trans Asia International Holding Group Thailand Company Limited, and other entities. The U.S. Treasury listed these parties as specially designated nationals on Nov. 12, citing their ties to Chinese organized crime and their involvement in developing scam hubs across Southeast Asia. Russia probes crypto briberyWhile the U.S. case focused on fraud targeting individual investors, a separate development in Russia involved alleged corruption tied to cryptocurrency. DL News, citing a local media report, said Russian prosecutors are seeking to seize a portfolio of luxury assets linked to Georgy Satyukov, a fugitive former employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, after investigators concluded he had accepted illicit payments in Bitcoin and Ethereum, described as the world’s largest cryptocurrencies. Russian authorities allege that between March and October 2021, Satyukov received $184 million in Bitcoin and $30 million in Ethereum from operators of the failed WEX crypto exchange in return for shielding them from a criminal investigation. WEX had taken over the operations of the BTC-e trading platform in 2017. Investigators say Satyukov liquidated much of his cryptocurrency holdings and used the proceeds to purchase residential and commercial properties in several cities, as well as high-end cars, luxury watches, and jewelry. They have identified $29.6 million in assets believed to be linked to the alleged bribes, which could be transferred to the Federal Treasury if prosecutors win a conviction. The U.S. domain seizures and the separate corruption investigation in Russia illustrate the varied ways cryptocurrency has been implicated in recent criminal cases. Both developments underscore the continued attention authorities are giving to the risks surrounding digital assets.

As a DAO LLC approved by the state of Wyoming in the US, Elysia will leverage its RWA tokenization system to bolster security within the protocol and provide legal safeguards to investors. In addition, tokenized tangible assets are expected to offer small investors a chance to invest in markets that were previously out of reach due to the requirement of a significant amount of capital.According to Aju Business Daily, an Elysia official said that an RWA-based lending protocol would not only appeal to retail investors but also to institutions and projects. These entities are expected to park their excess funds and introduce RWA liquidity pools into their DeFi, the official added.Better liquidity of physical assetsElysia’s RWA tokens can be liquidated on its DeFi platform Elyfi. Users can create RWA tokens based on their tangible assets and visit Elyfi to sell those tokens or borrow virtual assets against them. OKX and KuCoin lead $9M investment into UXLINK

UXLINK, a Web3 social network headquartered in Singapore, has announced a successful funding round raising $9 million, supported by a mix of private crypto and publicly listed companies including OKX and KuCoin. UXLINK announced details of the funding round in a social media post published to X on March 13. The startup, known for its innovative approach to social networking merging with transactions, has seen its user base grow to 3.5 million users. Among the investors contributing to this round are OKX Ventures, Web3Port Foundation, Cypher Capital, KuCoin Ventures, Gate Labs and Matrixport Ventures. ZhenFund, 7UPDAO, Signum Capital, ECV and GGV Capital were also participants. In a blog post Dora Yue, Founder of OKX Ventures, expressed enthusiasm about UXLINK's concept, stating:"This innovative concept merges social networking and transactions, creating a robust ecosystem where people can fully leverage their digital assets."Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on UnsplashAcquaintance-based social networkingYue described UXLINK as a game-changer in the field of Web3 social infrastructure. The project differentiates itself by relying on acquaintance social networking. Other Web3 social protocols such as Farcaster, Nostr, Cyberconnect and Lens Protocol are structured around one way follower relationships between key opinion leaders (KOLs) and followers. By contrast UXLINK takes a different approach, building a social network by placing emphasis on the existing social relationships of users with acquaintances. The idea is that real-life acquaintances are established through trust and implicate a much deeper personal connection by comparison with opinion leaders and followers. Speaking to that unique approach, pseudonymous crypto trader and investor Bull Flash stated on X on March 13: “Forget one-sided connections! UXLINK focuses on REAL-WORLD social interactions. Users can connect with each other AND with dApps in real-time through innovative Groups – a game-changer for web3. UXLINK is more than just a platform – it's a MOVEMENT.” Potential for further fundingWhile the exact valuation post-funding remains undisclosed, UXLINK indicated a potential for further funding rounds before its token generation event, signaling continued investor interest in its growth trajectory. With the freshly secured capital, UXLINK aims to introduce the "Social Liquidity Chain," leveraging Optimism and EigenDA technologies to support third-party developments. This initiative is expected to enhance the platform's capabilities and foster a more dynamic user experience. Since its establishment in April 2023, UXLINK has seen rapid adoption, hosting more than 75,000 decentralized groups. The vast majority of its users are located in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, South Asia and Africa. The platform's unique approach to social finance, facilitated by its Web3 "UXGroups” on Telegram, emphasizes bridging real-world trust dynamics with decentralized applications. In addition to being an investor in the company, last month the OKX Wallet was integrated with UXLINK in an effort to improve user experience, allowing UXLINK users to manage their Web3 assets more efficiently. UXLINK's successful funding round underscores growing investor confidence in the potential of Web3 social networks and belief in their ability to revolutionize traditional social interactions and financial transactions. As the platform continues to expand and innovate, it is positioning itself to make further strides in reshaping the landscape of digital social interactions and finance.
