Enhancing user experience

In an effort to elevate user experience and expand trading options, Bitget Wallet is committing to extensive product research, development initiatives and increased investments. The company plans on offering a wide array of services tailored to the Bitcoin ecosystem.

This includes robust support for BTC asset management, cross-chain swaps, on-ramping for externally owned account (EOA)-based wallets, multi-party computation (MPC) wallets, Taproot compatibility and streamlined asset transfers for both BRC-20 tokens and NFTs. In October, Bitget announced that it was taking the route of enhanced security by embarking on integrating MPC.

Integrated dApp browser

The platform also provides users with insights into macro and micro market trends through Bitget Swap, enabling interaction with popular projects via its dApp browser.

Bitget Wallet’s move has already garnered support from several Bitcoin ecosystem projects, with integrations on official websites such as Unisat, ALEX Lab, LifeRestart and Bitmap Explorer. The integrated dApp browser ensures convenient user access to these projects, fostering increased engagement and accessibility.

Looking forward, Bitget Wallet aims to capitalize on the medium to long-term market prospects within the Bitcoin ecosystem. The company is directing its efforts towards enhancing both technological infrastructure and product features, with a specific focus on critical areas such as Lightning Network, Nostr, Taproot Assets, BRC-20 and ARC-20 inscriptions.

Facilitating cross-chain transactions

An important facet of Bitget Wallet’s approach involves supporting multiple address formats, particularly within the Lightning Network. By doing so, the platform aims to improve asset transfer efficiency and introduce asset swaps between the Bitcoin mainnet and the Lightning Network. This move is geared towards facilitating cross-chain transactions between BTC and Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) assets on Bitget Swap, providing users with increased opportunities for portfolio diversification.

Alvin Kan, the Chief Operating Officer of Bitget Wallet, underscored the significance of Bitcoin as the foundational cornerstone of the crypto industry. He emphasized the platform’s commitment to becoming a key player in the growing Bitcoin ecosystem, providing users with robust and seamless ways to manage and grow their assets.

Formerly known as BitKeep, Bitget Wallet stands as Asia’s largest all-in-one Web3 trading wallet, boasting a five-year legacy and over 12 million users worldwide. On a global basis, the non-custodial wallet recently ranked fourth overall in terms of the number of wallet downloads.

Bitget acquired the Singaporean startup wallet project in June. Its addition helped the broader Bitget platform to achieve the milestone of 20 million users. The product was rebranded as Bitget Wallet shortly afterwards.

The company is keen to support other blockchain networks and ecosystems also. Earlier this month, the company announced an investment into Morph, a layer-2 blockchain that uses zero knowledge roll-up technology in an effort to focus on enhanced consumer experience.

Last week, the platform added support for ZKFair, a zero knowledge layer-2 network which is based on the Polygon CDK.

Victory Securities granted approval for retail crypto trading in Hong Kong

Victory Securities granted approval for retail crypto trading in Hong KongHong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has given the green light to Victory Securities, a well established investment firm headquartered in the Chinese autonomous territory, for retail virtual asset trading.Photo by Carlos Alberto Gómez Iñiguez on UnsplashFirst licensed corporationThe license will allow the investment firm to expand its crypto trading and advisory services to retail investors. The publicly traded company announced its crypto licensing achievement via a press release published to its website on Friday. In that statement, the company expressed the hope that “by connecting traditional finance with virtual assets, customers can configure assets in a flexible and convenient way, and [we] can provide general investors with investment advice on virtual assets and publish relevant research reports.”This approval marks Victory Securities as the first licensed corporation in Hong Kong to offer such services to the retail market, joining the ranks of already approved firms like HashKey Exchange and OSL Digital Securities. It builds upon previous licensing approval that the company received from the SFC to offer a full range of trading and advisory services in respect of virtual assets to institutional clients in November 2022.The move reflects Hong Kong’s commitment to crypto regulation, as earlier this year, the region established a framework enabling the provision of crypto services to retail clients. This development positions Hong Kong as a key player in the Asian crypto market, where firms seem to be receiving more regulatory clarity compared to their counterparts in the United States. The regulatory initiative gains significance in light of the recent JPEX scandal, involving an alleged HK$1.6 billion ($204 million) fraud.Bringing retail into cryptoVictory Securities, currently listed as an applicant on the SFC’s recently published roster of virtual asset trading firms, is navigating this regulatory landscape to bring retail investors into the crypto market. In parallel, HashKey Group, another Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency firm, has launched the city’s first SFC-approved trading app since the JPEX incident. HashKey Exchange’s app, boasting “full mobile trading capabilities,” became operational this month, a notable progression given its prior limitation to professional investors.Through HashKey’s app, local traders can now engage in bitcoin and ether transactions using funds from their Hong Kong or U.S. dollar bank accounts. In addition to pioneering retail crypto trading, HashKey has introduced its crypto over-the-counter (OTC) trading service, HashKey Brokerage, aligning with local securities regulations and the recently implemented cryptocurrency regulatory framework by the SFC.The Hong Kong regulator is also believed to be currently weighing up whether to allow retail investors the ability to access spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Despite these advancements, the SFC maintains restrictions on retail traders engaging in stablecoin transactions until new regulatory arrangements are established. This decision follows the SFC’s consultation paper on regulating crypto activities, emphasizing the need to address risks associated with stablecoins and their regulation. The regulator aims to ensure appropriate management of stablecoin reserves to maintain price stability and safeguard investors’ redemption rights, underscoring the potential significant implications for stablecoin stability if these risks are not effectively managed. As Hong Kong solidifies its position in the evolving crypto landscape, Victory Securities’ approval signifies yet another milestone in the region’s journey toward fostering a regulated and inclusive crypto market for retail investors.

B. Riley Financial Agrees Strategic Bitdeer Share Purchase

B. Riley Financial Agrees Strategic Bitdeer Share PurchaseBitdeer, the Singapore-based crypto mining firm that emerged as a spin-off from the renowned mining manufacturer Bitmain, has solidified a significant pact with financial services firm B. Riley Financial, through a share purchase deal. This accord entails the sale of up to $150 million worth of Bitdeer’s Class A ordinary shares.Photo by Kelly Sikkema on UnsplashOption to buyIn a filing dated August 9 with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the terms of the agreement unveil a strategic arrangement. B. Riley will possess the option, albeit not the obligation, to procure a designated quantity of Bitdeer’s shares over a span of three years. Parameters of this agreement include a maximum acquisition of either 1 million shares or 25% of the shares of Bitdeer traded on the Nasdaq throughout this stipulated purchase timeframe. The filing states: “Pursuant to the Purchase Agreement, the Company has the right to sell to B. Riley Principal Capital II, up to US$150,000,000 of its Class A ordinary shares, par value US$0.0000001 per share (the “Class A Ordinary Shares”), subject to certain limitations and conditions set forth in the Purchase Agreement.”Amplified voting privilegesIn essence, this arrangement affords B. Riley a distinct position within Bitdeer’s echelons. Class A shares, which typically elude public trading, grant shareholders amplified voting privileges in contrast to their Class B counterparts. Ergo, this deal furnishes B. Riley with a tangible stake in the domain of crypto mining.Underpinning this transaction, Bitdeer has committed to compensating B. Riley with 0.5% of the deal’s total value in acknowledgment of its commitment to procuring these shares. Additionally, B. Riley will be indemnified for legal expenses and outlays, extending up to a cap of $50,000.Broader mining interestIt’s not the first time that B. Riley has shown an interest in crypto mining. It signed a $100 million equity deal with Iris Energy last year. Additionally, it’s one of the largest creditors of Core Scientific.Noteworthy is the fact that Bitdeer embarked on its journey to public status via a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) deal with Blue Safari Group back in April. This strategic maneuver enabled Bitdeer to become public without taking the conventional route of an initial public offering (IPO).Marking a departure from the throes of the crypto winter, this SPAC deal entailed the fusion of a special purpose acquisition company with a private entity. Bitdeer’s subsequent Nasdaq debut wasn’t without its problems. Investors were lukewarm in the interest shown in the Bitdeer proposition, resulting in an immediate 30% price drop.Bhutan mining collaborationNotably, Bitdeer made headlines when it inked a partnership with Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) in May, signifying a collective stride towards establishing an ecologically-conscious, carbon-neutral digital asset mining venture within the realm of the Kingdom of Bhutan.Rooted in the visionary pursuits of Jihan Wu, the former Co-Founder of Bitmain, Bitdeer is distinguished for its cloud-mining services, a pursuit realized through its data centers stationed in Tennessee, Washington, and Texas. The company’s most recent operations report attests to the mining of 220 Bitcoin (BTC) via its self-mining enterprise in July, constituting an impressive year-over-year escalation of 41%.

Lion Group secures $600M facility to fund HYPE token treasury

Lion Group Holding Ltd (LGHL), a Nasdaq-listed financial services firm that provides an all-in-one platform for traders, has announced that it has secured $600 million to fund a Hyperliquid (HYPE) treasury. In a press release published by PR Newswire on behalf of the firm on June 18, the company outlined that a $600 million funding facility has been put in place by ATW Partners, a New York-headquartered investment firm that manages a number of private equity funds. Global investment bank Chardan Capital acted as the placement agent in facilitating the funding, with the first closing of $10.6 million, as per the subscription agreement.Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on UnsplashCorporate treasury strategyLion Group will use that money to launch a new corporate treasury strategy built around Hyperliquid’s HYPE token. Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange (DEX) which was created by Hyperliquid Labs, a startup founded by Jeff Yan.  The HYPE token is the native token of the Hyperliquid platform. It’s used to secure the network through staking and for project governance. The token is also used to provide transaction incentives, while the Hyperliquid platform buys back HYPE tokens using trading fee revenues. Lion Group’s platform offers its users access to contract-for-difference (CFD) trading, total return swap (TRS) trading, over-the-counter (OTC) stock options trading, while also acting as a futures and securities brokerage. Up until 2022, the firm was based in Hong Kong, opting to relocate to Singapore at that point. Primarily, the company serves corporate clients, individual professional investors and retail investors located in China and throughout the Southeast Asian region. Future of trading is on-chainIn explaining its rationale for pursuing a HYPE treasury strategy, the company’s CEO, Wilson Wang, stated: “Hyperliquid represents a natural extension of LGHL's existing derivatives business into decentralized markets, and reflects our conviction that decentralized on-chain execution is the future of trading." Going forward, the company will pursue a strategic accumulation of HYPE, with the token serving as the firm’s primary reserve asset. In addition to HYPE, Lion Group outlined that it may also allocate funds to purchase Solana (SOL) and Sui (SUI), with these tokens to be staked and custodied with institutional-grade digital asset custodian, BitGo. Lion Group asserted that both of these assets would form “key pillars” of a treasury strategy “focused on execution-first protocols.” Wang added that the company views “protocols like HYPE, with decentralized sequencing, as foundational to building scalable DeFi systems.” The company is not the first mover in terms of launching a HYPE-based corporate treasury. On June 17, Eyenovia, Inc. (EYEN), a Nasdaq-listed ophthalmic technology firm, announced that it had entered into a securities purchase agreement with a view towards financing a $50 million HYPE treasury. Additionally, the firm plans to change its name to Hyperion DeFi and its stock ticker to HYPD later this week to reflect its new HYPE-based reserve strategy. Shares in Eyenovia closed at $4.83 on June 18, down 30.7% over the course of 24 hours. Lion Group shares closed at $3.33, up 19.78%.
