Enabling e-CNY exchange

China initiated its CBDC pilot trials over a year ago, with it being much further ahead of other CBDC initiatives internationally in terms of development. It has now expanded its trials to include more lenders, with Standard Chartered China becoming the latest participant.

This development means that Standard Chartered Bank’s users in the Asian nation will soon have access to the digital version of the Chinese yuan by seamlessly integrating its platform with China’s dedicated CBDC app. According to an announcement by Standard Chartered Bank (China) Ltd. on Monday, the bank will be enabled, through partner firm City Bank Clearing Services Co., to offer its clients the ability to purchase, exchange or redeem e-CNY.

In its announcement, Standard Chartered China’s President, Zhang Xiaolei, stated:

“As an international bank rooted in the Chinese market for 165 years, Standard Chartered is optimistic about the development prospects of digital renminbi.”

Joining e-CNY testing program

The e-CNY pilot testing program in China has been extended to 26 cities and provinces. Standard Chartered’s Chinese subsidiary will involve itself with supply chain financing, trade financing and cross-border merchant payments as part of that pilot program.

The adoption of CBDCs is anticipated to reduce reliance on physical currency notes while ensuring transparent and tamper-proof transaction histories. China’s CBDC, known as the digital yuan or e-CNY (digital renminbi), has garnered international attention for its progressive approach to digital currency.

Broader digital assets sector involvement

Standard Chartered’s involvement in China’s CBDC pilot marks a milestone, emphasizing the bank’s commitment to digital innovation. However, the British banking conglomerate has had a broader approach to digital assets beyond this CBDC collaboration. A report by Nikkei Asia last month suggested that the banking group was making a concerted effort to develop its digital assets-related business within the Asian region through its Singapore-based investment arm, SC Ventures.

Earlier this month, SC Ventures unveiled Libeara, a platform which plans to offer the first-ever tokenized Singapore dollar government bond fund. Subsidiary companies include digital asset custodian Zodia Custody and institution-first digital asset marketplace Zodia Markets.

China has been at the forefront of CBDC experimentation, with initiatives like testing offline payment systems integrated with SIM cards. This innovative approach allows users to initiate CBDC payments by simply bringing their phones close to sale terminals. The trials, initially launched in major cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen, have encouraged residents to embrace e-CNY for everyday transactions.

While China’s advancements in CBDC trials are noteworthy, other nations, including India, Japan and the U.S., are also actively engaged in the advanced phases of CBDC-related research and development. These global efforts seek to diversify financial settlement options, providing individuals with a broader range of choices in the evolving landscape of digital currencies.

CoinGecko expands data offering through Zash acquisition

CoinGecko expands data offering through Zash acquisitionCoinGecko, the Malaysian crypto data aggregator, has intensified its focus on the non-fungible token (NFT) market through the recent acquisition of London-headquartered Zash. The move forms part of CoinGecko’s initiative to enhance its API offering by providing comprehensive data on digital collectibles.Photo by Andrey Metelev on UnsplashSolving for crypto data fragmentationIn a statement published to its website on Wednesday, CoinGecko provided further details on its acquisition of the enterprise-grade NFT and blockchain analytics company. Separately CoinGecko Co-Founder Bobby Ong told Tech in Asia that the crypto data sector is fragmented. As a consequence, it leads to inefficiency as market participants are forced to navigate multiple crypto data APIs. It’s in an effort to solve that issue that Ong and CoinGecko have moved to acquire Zash.Zash Co-Founder and CEO Parit Patel expressed optimism about the evolving nature of NFTs and their potential to unlock new use cases globally, creating value for both companies and consumers. The company plans to introduce new services derived from the acquisition by the second quarter of 2024.Enriched data offeringIn its own statement, CoinGecko emphasized its commitment to offering more NFT-related metrics. The acquisition aims to enrich CoinGecko’s data offerings with information such as metadata, historical trades and lending data related to NFTs. The specific financial details of the deal were not disclosed. With the integration of Zash, users can expect access to a broader range of data across multiple blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Chain (formerly Binance Smart Chain), Bitcoin Ordinals and Solana. The extended services will cover NFT lending information indexing various marketplaces, such as Blend, X2Y2 and NFTfi.In reflecting on the acquisition, CoinGecko Co-Founder TM Lee considered the move in terms of the ongoing process of asset tokenization. Taking to the X platform, Lee wrote:“Any asset that can be tokenized, will be tokenized. Like tokens, NFT is a core primitive to the crypto economy stack. We’ve been building http://coingecko.com/nft earlier even in the bear market and I’m excited on possibilities within the NFT industry with @zash_api joining us!”Monitoring wash tradingOne notable feature introduced through Zash is the ability for users to monitor wash trading, an illegal form of market manipulation that gives the false impression of market activity. CoinGecko clarified that this feature would be available for “major collections” minted on Ethereum.Wash trading, involving the simultaneous buying and selling of assets, has been associated with the NFT bubble of 2022. Blockchain forensic firm Chainalysis reported that over 100 profitable wash traders collectively earned nearly $9 million from this activity. However, it noted that the majority of NFT wash traders have been unprofitable, resulting in losses exceeding $416,984 from more than 150 wash trades. While the NFT market has faced challenges, with total sales currently at $80.8 million, significantly lower than the peak in August 2021 when daily sales exceeded $2 billion, CoinGecko’s strategic move positions the company to provide users with enhanced tools for assessing and ranking their cryptocurrency holdings. Established in 2014, CoinGecko operates as a platform offering comprehensive data and information on digital currencies, contributing to the quantitative evaluation of cryptocurrency portfolios.

Binance Thailand launches exchange services to the public

Binance, in collaboration with Gulf Innova, a subsidiary of Gulf Energy Development, has officially opened its joint venture crypto exchange, Binance Thailand, for public trading. Challenging the market incumbentThis move had been eight months in the making, signaling Binance's entry into the Thai crypto exchange market, following an announcement in 2023 that it intended to extend its offering to Thailand. While Binance is the largest global crypto exchange platform, in Thailand it will be challenging the dominance of an incumbent exchange. Bitkub is based in Bangkok, currently holding around 77% of the market share, with a daily volume of approximately $30 million, primarily trading the Thai baht and Tether USDT pair.Photo by Sara Dubler on UnsplashRegulatory approvalThe launch comes after Binance received regulatory approval from the local Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2023. Initially introduced on an "invitation-only" basis, the exchange is now accessible to all eligible users, with Binance having followed through on its plans to expand its presence in the region. In a statement released on Tuesday, Binance TH announced the implementation of a dedicated order book tailored for Thai baht trading pairs. Users can seamlessly deposit and withdraw local currency through integration with domestic banking systems. Binance has managed to push its service offering forward in Thailand despite regulatory concerns. In the aftermath of the company’s $4.3 billion settlement in relation to securities law violations with the authorities in the United States in November, concerns had been expressed that the charges brought against the firm in the U.S. would challenge the feasibility of the Binance TH venture. At present, the platform focuses solely on spot trading, with a Binance spokesperson revealing ambitious long-term plans for additional services pending regulatory approvals. Nirun Fuwattananukul, CEO of Gulf Binance, expressed gratitude, stating:"We are deeply humbled to finally announce the launch of our local platform to the general public in Thailand. Over the past year, we have been working closely with Thai regulators, putting substantial effort into detailed planning." Binance TH facilitates digital asset exchange services, collaborating with local banks in Thailand in enabling its service offering. The exchange has also partnered with Binance Kazakhstan for brokerage services, operating under the supervision of Thailand’s SEC. Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, emphasized the strategic significance of the venture, stating:“This is a strategic step forward, setting the stage for Thailand’s impending role as a key player in the global digital finance landscape.” No access for foreignersOne limitation of the service pertains to foreign nationals. There is a restriction on access for foreigners residing in Thailand, as Binance TH requires a Thai National Digital ID to complete Know Your Customer procedures. Despite regulatory challenges and tax implications on overseas income from stock and crypto traders announced by the government in September 2023, Binance remains optimistic about the future of crypto trading in Thailand. The exchange released its themes for 2024 report on Jan. 15, outlining key growth areas such as the Bitcoin ecosystem, ownership economy applications, artificial intelligence, real-world assets, on-chain liquidity and institutional adoption.
