Over 3,700 participants flock to Upbit D Conference to explore insights in blockchain

The sixth annual Upbit D Conference (UDC), a major blockchain event in South Korea hosted by the country’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, commenced on Monday (local time) at the Grand Walkerhill Seoul Hotel. Touting the theme “All That Blockchain,” the conference gathered some 3,700 participants — including 39 blockchain experts from 29 countries — both online and offline.

Aimed at contributing to the blockchain ecosystem, UDC has gained acclaim as a non-profit event featuring in-depth lectures by experts from around the globe. While it initially focused on industry and technology alone, the conference has since expanded its scope to cover areas such as policy, finance, business, culture and trends.

Lively guest discussions

Highlights of the event included a session led by Roger Ver, the founder of Bitcoin.com, who discussed the trajectory of the blockchain industry and the current status of Bitcoin. Korean telecommunications giant SK Telecom’s Executive Vice President, Oh Se-hyeon, also shared insights into the prospects of Web3 and blockchain services in Korea.

Other speakers included Emily Parker, Executive Director of CoinDesk; Howard Fischer, former Senior Trial Counsel at the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC); Nizam Ismail, former Founding Chairman of the Regulatory and Compliance Sub-Commitee at Blockchain Association Singapore; and Kim Kab-lae, Senior Research Fellow at the Korea Capital Market Institute. Together, the four experts discussed country-specific perspectives and current issues regarding the rapidly changing regulatory landscape of the global virtual asset industry.

“As blockchain’s influence expands across the economy, culture and society, UDC has evolved into a comprehensive conference capable of encompassing all aspects of blockchain. We hope it serves as a place that sparks positive inspiration and valuable connections,” said Song Chi-hyung, Chairman of Dunamu, the operator of Upbit.

 

Growing recognition

Over the past five years, UDC has seen participation from over 1,190 companies and nearly 19,100 individual attendees. As of this month, the cumulative number of views on the conference’s official YouTube videos has reached 1.12 million. Videos of all of this year’s sessions can be viewed on the UDC YouTube channel and website.

Former Thai PM expresses positive view on crypto

Thaksin Shinawatra, who served as Thailand's 23rd prime minister from 2001 to 2006 and whose daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra currently serves as the Southeast Asian nation’s prime minister, expressed positive views on crypto while speaking at an event in Bangkok on Monday.Photo by Evan Krause on UnsplashIssuing stablecoins According to a report by Reuters, in his speech, Shinawatra called on Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to enable the trading of stablecoins and cryptocurrencies that are otherwise backed by real-world assets (RWAs). Addressing the consideration of systemic risk posed by cryptocurrencies, Shinawatra stated:"There will be no risk, it is just another currency in the world."  Shinawatra also commented on a government plan to make the Thai tourist resort city of Phuket a potential location for a pilot program which would trial crypto payments. Bullish on crypto This is not the first occasion in which the former Thai prime minister expressed a bullish view on crypto. He has been a long-standing advocate for cryptocurrencies. His comments earlier this week mirror similar views he expressed while speaking at an event at the Intercontinental Hotel in Hua Hin in December. On that occasion, he stated: “There are already many cryptocurrencies. Some people say that in the future, we will have more currencies than countries.”  In Hua Hin, he also suggested that his friends believe that Bitcoin could reach a unit price of $850,000. With that potential rise in value, Shinawatra wants Thai citizens to be well-positioned for the crypto wave. He encouraged the Thai government to engage positively with digital assets and to take the time to study the emerging asset class. Back in August, Thailand’s SEC launched the Digital Asset Regulatory Sandbox as part of an initiative to permit interested service providers to trial crypto-related services within a controlled sandbox environment.  Building on that sentiment expressed by Shinawatra in December, in his latest speech, he called on the country’s financial institutions to be more open to cryptocurrency.  Paying attention to U.S. policy on crypto In making that call, he cited developments in the United States. Particularly, he focused on the incoming U.S. administration’s positive embrace of digital assets. This includes positive commentary made by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and the appointment of Paul Atkins by Trump as the new head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the U.S. Atkins has already outlined plans to collaborate with crypto-friendly SEC Commissioners Hester Peirce and Mark Uyeda, with a view towards shaping the agency’s crypto policies.  Beyond crypto, the former prime minister had a number of other suggestions that he feels would be good for Thailand. With regard to the country’s stock market, he called for tighter regulatory oversight, tax incentives for long-term investors and improved corporate governance. He encouraged the opening of a carbon credit trading venue in order to ensure better pricing. Shinawatra believes that Thailand should legalize online gambling on the basis that it is currently losing 100 billion Thai baht ($4 billion) in annual tax revenue from the activity. The Thai government has moved to approve a draft law that would legalize casinos and gambling.

Report: Asia Set to Dominate Web3 Gaming MarketA new report has revealed that Asia is poised to dominate the growing Web3 gaming market, accounting for as much as 80% of all players. The study, conducted by Japanese firm Pacific Meta and DappRadar, found that the region already accounts for 55% of the global gaming population, with 1.7 billion players.©Pexels/Lucie LizThe report identified that the role-playing genre is the most popular in Asia, with games such as Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star Online and Genshin Impact ranking highly.Legal restrictionsThe research noted that legal restrictions on gaming are prevalent across the region, with China only allowing gamers under 18 to play for one hour a day and blockchain games all but banned in South Korea. Despite these restrictions, the report argued that Nexon’s Web3 play with MapleStory Universe and Square Enix’s upcoming Web3 game Symbiogenesis are two examples of crypto games gaining traction in the East. Both games will use the Polygon blockchain, currently the most preferred network for Web3 gaming from a game studio perspective.The report also concluded that Web3 gaming is a “natural” fit for the Asian market because of the types of games to which the market is accustomed. It argues that as Web3 games become more focused on gameplay over financials, Western and Eastern audiences will come to expect similar experiences.A developing understanding of Web3 gamesTo better understand the market, Pacific Meta surveyed over 1,000 adults in Japan and found that 40% knew about blockchain games. Among those who knew about such games, nearly 57% said Web3 games “seemed interesting”, while roughly 10% said they did not seem interesting. Notably, about 33% said “neither”, suggesting they were perhaps unsure about Web3 games and hadn’t yet formed an opinion on them.When asked about the types of blockchain games they would be interested in, 773 out of the 1,030 surveyed said that they would like a game to be free-to-play, and that initial cost was an important feature to them. 538 said that they would like the game to be playable on a mobile phone. Player earnings, game quality, consoles, and famous IP scored lower on the list.Long road to mainstream adoptionThe report highlights that the nascent industry still has a ways to go before it sees mainstream adoption. Nevertheless, big brands such as Razer and FIFA are doubling down on Web3 gaming projects. With the Asian market poised to take a dominant role in Web3 gaming, developers will need to tailor their offerings to suit the preferences of the region’s gamers.The Web3 gaming market in Asia is enormous and is expected to dominate the global market, with Japan a key market for growth. Developers will need to focus on the role-playing genre and create free-to-play mobile games to appeal to gamers in the region. As the Web3 gaming market continues to grow, and blockchain technology advances, it is likely that we will see more games and platforms targeting Asian gamers in the coming years.
