OKX maintains robust asset reserves with 103% BTC backing

Web3 & Enterprise·November 01, 2023, 1:49 AM

Seychelles-incorporated cryptocurrency exchange OKX has recently released its 12th asset reserve certificate, with its latest report revealing that the company maintains reserves of 103% for its top coins, which include Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC). The measure is meant to reassure users that their funds are well-backed and, in fact, more than covered by the exchange’s reserves.

Bitcoin, Ether reserve surpluses

OKX provided details on its latest asset reserve status via a blog post published to its website on Monday. Alongside providing the relevant asset reserve data, the exchange celebrated its first complete year of having utilized a proof-of-reserve-based system.

For BTC, OKX holds a substantial reserve of 140,484 BTC, effectively exceeding the 136,227 BTC held in user accounts. Similarly, ETH reserves stand at 1.46 million ETH, providing a surplus over the 1.42 million ETH owed to OKX users.

The exchange also demonstrated its considerable holdings in stablecoins, with over $5 billion in USDT reserves and over $327 million in USDC reserves. In an interview with CoinDesk recently, OKX Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Haider Rafique, referred to the need to provide a mechanism to reassure platform users. He stated:

“Customers often express concerns in person about centralized exchanges, highlighting issues with security, solvency and downtimes, even if they don’t always voice these concerns digitally.”

Use of zero-knowledge technology

In April, OKX upgraded its proof of reserve system, opting for the use of zero-knowledge scalable transparent argument of knowledge (zk-STARK) technology. This approach allows OKX platform users to independently verify exchange solvency, confirming their assets are backed by OKX reserves. A zero-knowledge proof demonstrates the truth of a statement without sharing the statement’s contents. Therefore, no account balances are made public to other service users, maintaining user privacy.

Regular transparency is now crucial for exchanges like OKX, as it aims to provide users with the certainty that their funds are genuinely available for withdrawal at any given time. After the FTX insolvency incident, verifiable proof of reserves has become paramount in reassuring users about the safety of their investments.

Trend towards improved standards

In the wake of several high-profile crypto platform failures in 2022, many exchanges are making greater efforts towards reassuring users that their funds are safe and accounted for. This has given rise to the popularity of proof of reserve systems.

On that basis, OKX hasn’t been alone in implementing a proof of reserves-based system. In July another Seychelles-incorporated crypto platform, Bitget, announced that it could demonstrate the debt-free status of its business through its proof of reserves system.

Nic Carter, Partner at crypto venture capital and private equity firm Castle Island Ventures, has carried out some research into the various proof of reserve systems employed by a number of global crypto platforms. While accepting that the approach is not foolproof, Carter maintains that it’s still a move in the right direction. “The way PoR works is, if enough exchanges do it, the few exchanges that don’t do it end up sticking out like a sore thumb,” he states.

China Launches National Blockchain Center to Develop Talent

China Launches National Blockchain Center to Develop TalentHaving initially been announced in February, China’s National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center was formally launched on Wednesday. The center is based in China’s capital city of Beijing, and plans to collaborate with existing crypto and blockchain businesses, think tanks that concern themselves with blockchain and digital assets, and local universities in an effort to further advance blockchain technology within China’s borders.Photo by Hanson Lu on UnsplashEnterprise blockchain developmentEncompassed within the National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center lies the Beijing Academy of Blockchain and Edge Computing. The academy’s leading achievement to date has been its development of the ChainMaker blockchain. The state-sponsored blockchain incorporates clusters of high performance servers of 1,000 units or more, and it claims to achieve a throughput of 240 million transactions per second. The blockchain is being geared towards enterprise use, and the sharing of information between businesses. The ChainMaker project team has also developed an immutable storage mechanism called “Hong”. It’s understood that the team plans to open-source that technology in due course. The storage system is being used by around 80 government departments in Beijing to collect and store data.ChainMaker is collaborating with fifty corporations, with most of them being state-owned entities.Linking up separate networksIn these efforts to advance China’s blockchain sector, the Center is being backed by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology. One of its key objectives is to ensure that the research center enables a comprehensive, nation-wide network to link together disparate blockchain systems, including those already built, within China. Furthermore, the Chinese authorities want the Center to support existing industries, serving them by bringing blockchain technology to their operations, and in that way advancing businesses with that added competitive edge.Zheng Zhiming, a leading academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences said that existing blockchain projects are isolated from each other. Zhiming believes that this is holding them back, impeding their growth. This latest approach through the National Blockchain Technology Center is geared to address that shortcoming. It’s interesting to note that while the Chinese authorities have taken a very hard line in relation to cryptocurrencies, they are very much trying to advance their blockchain sector. Likewise, they are pulling out the stops for China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) project, the digital yuan or e-CNY.It emerged last week that the Bank of China has partnered with French international banking group BNP Paribas, in an effort to promote further use of the digital yuan among the bank’s corporate clients.A dual strategyMeanwhile in China’s autonomous territory of Hong Kong, the city has been given an implicit mandate from the Chinese central government to open its doors to cryptocurrency-related businesses. Cleverly, the Chinese are covering both eventualities. While they don’t want citizens within mainland China to have access to decentralized cryptocurrencies and dApps, they still don’t want to miss out on any upside that the technology and its innovation may bring. On that basis, Hong Kong has been given the space and freedom to compete for crypto business on a global basis, competing in that respect with other emerging centers such as Singapore and Dubai.

CoinFLEX Effects Partial Repayment of SmartBCH Debt

CoinFLEX Effects Partial Repayment of SmartBCH DebtCoinFLEX, a Seychelles-based crypto yield platform that operated the BCH to sBCH cross-chain bridge, has taken a significant step towards its restructuring plans by partially repaying its debts to SmartBCH Alliance.Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on PexelsBitcoin Cash sidechainAs part of the repayment, SmartBCH, a Bitcoin Cash sidechain compatible with Ethereum, received distributions from CoinFLEX, including approximately 4.28 million rvUSD ($750,000), 652,000 USDC ($652,000), and 6,834 BCH ($1.6 million). Notably, 80% of the received USDC has been swapped into Bitcoin Cash, while the remaining portion has been reserved to cover legal and operational expenses. SmartBCH currently holds a total of 10,758 BCH.The repayment to SmartBCH comes amidst a significant surge in the price of Bitcoin Cash, which has witnessed a remarkable increase of over 110% in the past seven days. This surge has positioned Bitcoin Cash as a top performer among major currencies in the crypto market, according to data from CoinGecko.Bitcoin Cash, along with other Bitcoin forks, has been benefiting from the overall rise in the cryptocurrency market. The increased interest can be attributed to the flurry of spot Bitcoin ETF filings that have taken place recently. The positive developments surrounding CoinFLEX and Bitcoin Cash have also had a ripple effect on associated tokens. $FLEX and $OX, tokens connected to CoinFLEX, have experienced notable increases in value, rising by 53% and 65% respectively over the past week.CoinFLEX itself has been undergoing a significant restructuring process that was approved by the Seychelles Courts on March 6. The exchange initially suspended withdrawals in June 2022, citing extreme market conditions and uncertainty related to a counterparty.CoinFLEX was one of several crypto firms affected by the collapse of the Terra ecosystem in May 2022, resulting in the loss of over $40 billion in investor value within a short period. In September, the company revealed its restructuring proposal, which involved offering over 65% of its equity to creditors and allocating 15% to employees.OPNX rebrandLast March, CoinFLEX rebranded itself as Open Exchange (OPNX) following the approval of its restructuring plan. The founders of CoinFLEX, Mark Lamb and Sudhu Arumugam, are collaborating with Kyle Davies and Su Zhu, the co-founders of the bankrupt crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), on the new Dubai-based venture.SmartBCH has announced its intention to open an account on OPNX and gradually convert rvUSD into Bitcoin Cash through the exchange. It is worth noting that, as part of the restructuring terms, SmartBCH is entitled to common equity in CoinFLEX and one board seat, although it has not received these benefits at present.Additionally, SmartBCH has burned 33,365.67 sBCH tokens, returning them to the old bridge address. As a result, the total sBCH in circulation on the sidechain now amounts to 67,756.766.To further enhance stability, SmartBCH has entered into an agreement with CoinFLEX to assume responsibility for maintaining the 1:1 peg between sBCH (the sidechain’s native token) and BCH.
