About OLA GG

OLA GG is renowned as the largest Spanish-speaking Web3 gaming community with over 400,000 participants from different Hispanic regions. It is also the subDAO — a decentralized autonomous organization created by another decentralized autonomous organization — of Yield Guild Games (YGG). With the help of YGG’s infrastructure and assets, the guild onboards gamers to the metaverse and offers various opportunities, including creating various Web3 content and winning rewards through events.

A thriving Web3 ecosystem for millions

Based on the partnership with OLA GG, XPLA aims to establish a sustainable Web3 ecosystem for over 450 million Spanish-speaking users across Europe and Latin America to expand its influence and user base. XPLA’s mainnet recently onboarded major play-to-own (P2O) games in July, such as Com2uS Group’s globally popular intellectual property games Summoners War: Chronicle, Ace Fishing: Crew, and Minigame Party.

“We expect this exciting collaboration will provide new opportunities and possibilities to the OLA GG community. With XPLA, we will lead the era of new Web3-based games,” said Nico del Pino, co-founder of OLA GG.

Bitfinex Forges Strategic Partnership with Zodia Custody

Bitfinex Forges Strategic Partnership with Zodia CustodyCryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex has formed a strategic partnership with digital assets custodian Zodia Custody to fortify the security of its institutional clients’ assets. The deal struck with Zodia Custody, a subsidiary of the UK multinational banking titan Standard Chartered, aligns with a growing trend within the digital assets sector, one that emphasizes separating asset custody from trading activities. Such a division will result in heightened security measures while better meeting regulatory compliance.Photo by Ketut Subiyanto on PexelsSecuring digital assetsThis collaboration provides an opportunity for institutional clients who maintain accounts with both Bitfinex and Zodia Custody. They can now seamlessly replicate their custodial assets on Bitfinex’s cutting-edge trading platform, all while basking in the security offered by Zodia’s off-exchange settlement solution, aptly named Interchange. With this innovation, the need for actual asset transfers becomes obsolete as the settlement process unfolds periodically on the blockchain. This approach not only ensures efficiency but also provides greater security when interacting with the platform.Industry trendBitfinex’s move towards segregating trading and custodial functions aligns with best practices in the crypto industry but also signifies a wider trend observed among cryptocurrency exchanges as they increasingly adopt a more conventional approach akin to traditional financial institutions.Paolo Ardoino, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Bitfinex, shared the exchange’s perspective, stating:“We are committed to shaping the future of digital market infrastructure and enabling institutional customers to thrive in this space. Working with Zodia Custody is a significant part of that strategy, and together we can look to enable even more institutions to enter or further participate in digital assets.”This partnership serves as a testament to Bitfinex’s continuous efforts to collaborate with reputable custodians, building upon past successful alliances with firms like Koine in 2020 and Digivault in 2022.The significance of segregating asset custody from trading operations has taken on greater importance, primarily in the aftermath of the collapse of FTX, where management gambled with customer’s assets.Zodia’s market expansionZodia Custody, with the backing of Standard Chartered Bank, has recently expanded its footprint into Singapore, offering digital asset custody services to financial institutions in the burgeoning Asian market. Not content with that, in May it launched its crypto custodian service in Dubai. The following month the fledgling firm announced a partnership with blockchain infrastructure firm Blockdaemon relative to crypto staking for institutional clients. There’s been no let up in the firm’s roll-out of services as earlier this month it commenced a yield offering on stablecoins in partnership with Singapore-based DeFi platform OpenEden.Bitfinex’s history includes one of the most infamous hacks in the cryptocurrency sphere, with the pilfering of 120,000 BTC, now valued at over $3 billion. Nevertheless, the exchange has undergone a transformative journey and presently boasts an extensive array of cryptocurrencies and trading pairs. As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, the practice of separating custody from trading is poised to become a standard procedure, further enhancing the legitimacy and security of the cryptocurrency market.

Animoca Indicates Fund Interest From Console Makers

Animoca Indicates Fund Interest From Console MakersThe head of Animoca Ventures has said that Web3 gaming is attracting the interest of veterans of the gaming world as well as that of “key Japanese console makers.”Animoca Ventures is a subsidiary company of Hong Kong-headquartered Web3 gaming and NFT firm, Animoca Brands. In a conversation with The Block recently, James Ho explained that although Web3 gaming has seen a short to medium-term downtrend when using the pricing of gaming-related tokens as the metric, the Animoca Ventures lead is seeing interest coming from “some of the best, most profound veterans in gaming.”Photo by Albie Patacsil on UnsplashProof of interestHo elaborated that there are a host of examples that back up his claim. He referred to FunPlus’s investment in global cross-platform play-and-earn games developer and publisher, Xterio. FunPlus itself is a Switzerland-headquartered independent games developer and publisher with offices and operations in China, Singapore, Canada, Spain, and the United States. Xterio raised $40 million in a funding round led by FunPlus in August of last year, with funding going towards building out its platform alongside further game development.Ho also cited Square Enix, a Japanese gaming conglomerate that has shown an interest in blockchain-based gaming in recent years. In April, it announced that it was tripling down on blockchain by partnering with Web3 platform Elixir. The objective of the collaboration is to generate visibility and adoption of Web3 gaming among traditional gamers. It’s also understood that Chinese tech giant Tencent has had a games studio under its group of companies which is believed to be building a blockchain-based first-person shooter game. Meanwhile, French video game publishing behemoth Ubisoft is an investor in Animoca Brands while also participating in a crypto-focused fund run by multi-stage technology investment platform, White Star Capital.Console-maker intentMost notable from Ho’s interview, though, is his claim that “key Japanese console makers” have an interest right now in pursuing Web3 gaming. That’s incredibly significant because if Web3 can conquer the consoles, it will truly be a mass-market affair at that point.Ho elaborated: “Console makers never cared about free-to-play until it grew into multi-million users, what we’re seeing here now is some of the console makers with their deep pockets want to get involved in potentially a fund to stay on top of innovation… And that to me is a signal that they want to build something in this space in the near future, or not too distant future.”The Animoca Ventures lead talked about “key Japanese console makers,” specifically in the context of interest expressed by them in investing in a second early-stage venture fund that Animoca is considering. The expression of interest has become evident to the company as it’s a response it received having touted the prospect of establishing the fund. It’s interesting to hear that Animoca is actively pitching the notion of raising another fund, as it had been speculated that the firm has scaled down some of its existing funds. It’s understood that the firm was working on the new fund in November of last year, initially proposing a target of $2 billion. Once January came around, Animoca took the decision to scale that target back by half to $1 billion. The company denies that reporting on the subject, suggesting instead that the original target of the fund was $1 billion from the outset.

Nomura survey indicates shift towards crypto investment in Japan

Nomura Holdings, Japan's largest brokerage and investment banking company, along with its digital asset arm, Laser Digital, has unveiled a survey indicating a significant shift towards cryptocurrency investment among Japanese investment managers.  54% of investment managers favor cryptoThe survey, conducted in April with over 500 respondents, reveals that 54% of investment managers plan to invest in crypto assets within the next three years, aiming to stabilize their portfolios and mitigate risks through diversification and hedging against inflation. According to the survey, approximately 25% of respondents hold a positive impression of cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin and Ether. Meanwhile, 62% view crypto assets as a viable diversification opportunity. Around half of those that responded indicated an interest in crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) while 31% are considering direct investment. This trend follows the Japanese cabinet's February approval of a proposal to include crypto in the list of assets that local investment limited partnerships can acquire or hold. Nomura anticipates a revision to the Limited Partnerships Act later this year to accommodate this change.Photo by Jezael Melgoza on UnsplashNew product development to drive demandThe survey also highlights the primary drivers for future investments in crypto assets. These include the development of a variety of financial products such as exchange-traded funds, investment trusts, staking, lending and other innovative offerings. These developments align with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's "new capitalism" economic policy. Within that policy, Kishida outlined that fostering Web3 innovation is a key priority in a keynote address at the WebX conference in Tokyo in 2023. Metaplanet bond issuanceIn a related move, Tokyo-based investment and consulting firm Metaplanet plans to issue 1 billion yen ($6.26 million) worth of bonds to finance its Bitcoin acquisitions. The firm announced on June 24 that its board had approved the bond issuance, with the Bitcoin intended for long-term holding. A separate notice detailed that the bonds would offer an annual rate of 0.5%. Metaplanet appears to be following a business strategy first pioneered by MicroStrategy in the United States. The American business intelligence firm, now focused on Bitcoin development, holds the record for a public company with the most Bitcoin, possessing 226,331 BTC worth $15 billion. It provides an alternative means through which corporations can gain exposure to Bitcoin investment. Metaplanet is likely to fulfill a similar role within the Japanese market, meeting that developing investment need identified among Japanese investment managers in Nomura’s survey. While the Nomura survey findings are largely positive, there were a number of concerns expressed by investment managers also in relation to crypto. Among them were concerns about counterparty risk, regulatory requirements and high asset volatility. However, the report suggests that there is a path through which these concerns can be minimized. The report states: “These hurdles could soon be lowered, as Japan’s digital asset laws and regulations are rapidly being developed, enabling increased engagement from institutional investors in the future.” In December, the Japanese government approved a tax regime revision to exempt corporations from paying tax on unrealized crypto gains if they hold the assets long-term.
