Enhancing user experience

In an effort to elevate user experience and expand trading options, Bitget Wallet is committing to extensive product research, development initiatives and increased investments. The company plans on offering a wide array of services tailored to the Bitcoin ecosystem.

This includes robust support for BTC asset management, cross-chain swaps, on-ramping for externally owned account (EOA)-based wallets, multi-party computation (MPC) wallets, Taproot compatibility and streamlined asset transfers for both BRC-20 tokens and NFTs. In October, Bitget announced that it was taking the route of enhanced security by embarking on integrating MPC.

Integrated dApp browser

The platform also provides users with insights into macro and micro market trends through Bitget Swap, enabling interaction with popular projects via its dApp browser.

Bitget Wallet’s move has already garnered support from several Bitcoin ecosystem projects, with integrations on official websites such as Unisat, ALEX Lab, LifeRestart and Bitmap Explorer. The integrated dApp browser ensures convenient user access to these projects, fostering increased engagement and accessibility.

Looking forward, Bitget Wallet aims to capitalize on the medium to long-term market prospects within the Bitcoin ecosystem. The company is directing its efforts towards enhancing both technological infrastructure and product features, with a specific focus on critical areas such as Lightning Network, Nostr, Taproot Assets, BRC-20 and ARC-20 inscriptions.

Facilitating cross-chain transactions

An important facet of Bitget Wallet’s approach involves supporting multiple address formats, particularly within the Lightning Network. By doing so, the platform aims to improve asset transfer efficiency and introduce asset swaps between the Bitcoin mainnet and the Lightning Network. This move is geared towards facilitating cross-chain transactions between BTC and Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) assets on Bitget Swap, providing users with increased opportunities for portfolio diversification.

Alvin Kan, the Chief Operating Officer of Bitget Wallet, underscored the significance of Bitcoin as the foundational cornerstone of the crypto industry. He emphasized the platform’s commitment to becoming a key player in the growing Bitcoin ecosystem, providing users with robust and seamless ways to manage and grow their assets.

Formerly known as BitKeep, Bitget Wallet stands as Asia’s largest all-in-one Web3 trading wallet, boasting a five-year legacy and over 12 million users worldwide. On a global basis, the non-custodial wallet recently ranked fourth overall in terms of the number of wallet downloads.

Bitget acquired the Singaporean startup wallet project in June. Its addition helped the broader Bitget platform to achieve the milestone of 20 million users. The product was rebranded as Bitget Wallet shortly afterwards.

The company is keen to support other blockchain networks and ecosystems also. Earlier this month, the company announced an investment into Morph, a layer-2 blockchain that uses zero knowledge roll-up technology in an effort to focus on enhanced consumer experience.

Last week, the platform added support for ZKFair, a zero knowledge layer-2 network which is based on the Polygon CDK.

Tether bites back on UN report criticism

A United Nations (UN) report published on Monday pointed fingers at USDT for its alleged role in money laundering and scams in Southeast Asia, prompting the stablecoin’s issuer, Tether, to respond.Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashFighting backThe stablecoin issuer finds itself under the spotlight once again, facing intense scrutiny over its association with illicit activities, according to the UN report. Responding by way of a blog post, Tether expressed disappointment and pushed back against the accusations. The firm asserted that the report disproportionately focuses on USDT's alleged connection to illicit activities, neglecting to acknowledge the positive impact it has had on developing economies in emerging markets. Collaborating with law enforcementTether defended its position by highlighting its collaborative efforts with global law enforcement agencies, such as the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the recently onboarded United States Secret Service (USSS). The company expressed disappointment with the UN's assessment and stressed that its monitoring measures surpass those of traditional banking systems, historically implicated in money laundering cases. Having frozen over $300 million in recent months to combat the criminal use of crypto assets, Tether emphasized the traceability of its tokens and its established track record of collaboration with law enforcement. In its blog post, Tether urged the UN to shift the conversation from concentrating solely on risks to discussing how centralized stablecoins like USDT could contribute to the fight against financial crimes. The UN Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) division responsible for Southeast Asia and the Pacific released the report, specifically highlighting USDT as a significant instrument for money laundering in the region, notably on the Tron blockchain. Tether's response came soon after the release of the UNODC report, where the company emphasized the need for a broader discussion with the UN on addressing financial crimes within blockchain platforms. Tether acknowledged that there are still numerous opportunities to combat financial crimes on blockchain platforms and encouraged the UN to engage with the industry to comprehend and implement contemporary strategies. The company expressed a willingness to collaborate on initiatives aimed at enhancing the understanding of blockchain technology and its potential in fighting financial crime. A perennial controversyTether has been the subject of a perennial controversy inside and outside the crypto space over the years. Its critics have long accused the company of not having the asset backing to reflect the U.S. dollar stablecoins it issues. The issue has been compounded by Tether’s inability to produce fully fledged audits as opposed to attestation reports to verify its holdings. Speaking on the edges of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, Howard Lutnick, CEO of leading global financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald spoke positively about Tether. He said that his firm has held and managed large quantities of Tether’s assets. Lutnick confirmed that “they have the money they say they have.” Off the back of Lutnick’s comments, Nic Carter, partner at venture capital and private equity firm Castle Island Ventures, outlined that Tether’s critics have been proven wrong. Carter wrote: “Tether truthers spent 6 years trying to convince everyone tether would collapse and drag down the industry. it didn't. . . . Not sure anyone has ever been more wrong about anything.”

Hong Kong Setting High Bar on Crypto Rules

Hong Kong Setting High Bar on Crypto RulesLucy Gazmararian, a Fintech Advisory Group member of Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and founder of crypto venture firm Token Bay Capital has said that the standards for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) in Hong Kong are incredibly high.©Pexels/Brayden LawThe Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has established these strict guidelines as they want the crypto industry to adhere to the same compliance standards as traditional financial firms.Gazmararian made the comments in discussion with Cointelegraph on the fringes of the Hong Kong WOW Summit. Although the bar is set high, Gazmararian maintains that it is not without good reason. The SFC’s approach is to ask VASPs to apply the same standards that existing financial institutions such as huge banks and asset managers must comply with.Short term challengesAccording to a consultation paper released by the SFC on February 20th, licensed VASPs may serve retail investors, but the standard of investor protection measures imposed needs to be considered. Additionally, Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) policies were also discussed. While these high standards may benefit the industry in the long run, Gazmararian believes they may pose challenges for the crypto industry in Hong Kong over the short term. She explained that many crypto businesses are in the startup phase and have funding but not huge amounts. Therefore, complying with the framework may incur significant costs. Gazmararian mentioned the need for local VASPs to have insurance, independent assessment reports, and store crypto in cold storage. It is important to note that these costs may prevent some startups from entering the market, which may have consequences on the industry’s growth in Hong Kong. The Token Bay Capital founder believes that with a solid regulatory framework in place, more well-capitalized financial firms will be willing to help promising startups get off the ground. In her opinion, the companies that receive a license will be upholding the most stringent standards.Ambitions to be global crypto hubThe SFC has encouraged individuals, corporations, and crypto firms to review the 361-page consultation paper and provide feedback. The securities regulator wants these entities to share their views and point to things that may have been missed. According to Gazmararian, the SFC is “absolutely focused” on getting everything right, so they are seeking input from a wide range of sources.Submissions for feedback on the consultation paper closed on March 31. Hong Kong has made significant strides in recent months to establish itself as the world’s next crypto hub. According to a March 20 statement by the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Christian Hui, more than 80 digital asset firms have expressed interest in establishing a presence in Hong Kong over the last few months. This interest is a testament to the growing importance of the crypto industry and the favorable environment that Hong Kong is creating for its growth.
