Reports from South Korea indicate that the nation is considering transforming its temporary crypto investigative unit into a permanent fixture to tackle the escalating cases of crimes and fraud related to cryptocurrencies. Government deliberations to elevate investigative unitAccording to local publication Segye Ilbo, the South Korean Justice Ministry and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety are gearing up to commence discussions in early May regarding the elevation of the Joint Virtual Asset Crime Investigation Unit to an official department.Photo by Daniel Bernard on UnsplashAims of the promotionThe proposed elevation seeks to formalize the status of the unit, which currently operates as a temporary body under the Seoul Southern District Prosecutor’s Office and faces the possibility of disbandment. The transition aims to enhance operational efficiency by facilitating the appointment of new prosecutors and allocating dedicated budgetary resources, as outlined by Segye. Background of the investigative unitEstablished in July 2023, the unit comprises approximately 30 experts drawn from seven financial and tax regulatory authorities. It represents South Korea's inaugural investigative body specializing in digital asset crimes, a response to the surge in crypto-related criminal activities witnessed in the country. Rising incidents of crypto-related crimesThe urgency to establish a permanent investigative unit stems from the notable increase in crypto-related criminal incidents. According to a February report from South Korea’s Financial Intelligence Unit, local crypto firms reported a total of 16,076 suspicious transactions in 2023, reflecting a significant 49% surge compared to the previous year. Upcoming crypto regulationsIn tandem with efforts to strengthen investigative capabilities, South Korea is preparing to implement its first comprehensive crypto regulation on July 19. SBI and Chiliz join forces in fan token offering in Japan

SBI Digital Asset Holdings (SBI DAH) has unveiled a new joint venture with Chiliz, geared towards introducing soccer club fan tokens to Japan.  Bringing a fan engagement token offering to JapanThese tokens, operating under the Socios fan engagement brand, encompass soccer clubs such as Arsenal, AC Milan, Manchester City, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. Both companies outlined to The Block in a joint statement that the purpose of the joint venture is to provide local sports fans in Japan with access to tokens associated with these high profile soccer clubs.Photo by Konstantin Evdokimov on UnsplashAlongside this collaboration, SBI DAH intends to establish a node on the Chiliz Chain. Notably, over 2 million users have already engaged with the Socios fan tokens, signifying a burgeoning interest in this space. Rather than depend upon non-fungible tokens Chiliz relies upon fan tokens, representing a distinct category. They're fungible, akin to tracking stocks, facilitating fan engagement through voting, competitions, VIP experiences, merchandise and exclusive offers.  In Japan, private investors traditionally exhibit more active engagement with companies, often receiving incentives such as discount coupons, gift cards, points and memberships. While fan tokens don't confer ownership rights in the clubs, they offer similar avenues for engagement.  Fernando Luis Vázquez Cao, CEO of SBI DAH, highlighted the importance of technology in enhancing community experiences, expressing enthusiasm for collaborating with industry leaders like Chiliz to introduce novel experiences to the Japanese audience. Vázquez Cao stated:”The partnership between SBI DAH and Chiliz will bring together the best-in-class capabilities of both traditional finance and Web3, leveraging fintech innovations to transform the sports and entertainment experiences for communities.” The recent transition of the Chiliz blockchain from a Proof of Authority (PoA) to a Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) version marks a significant step forward, attracting node operators like Paris Saint Germain and enhancing the network's capabilities. PoSA is a hybrid consensus algorithm that enables faster block times and reduced transaction costs. Additional partnershipsIn addition to its collaboration with Chiliz, SBI DAH boasts a diverse portfolio of blockchain interests, spanning initiatives such as AsiaNext, SBI Digital Markets and crypto custodian Zodia Custody. Many crypto projects have partnered with the company as a means to gain access to the Japanese market. One of the most recent examples is its partnership with USDC stablecoin issuer Circle.  The objective of that partnership has been to expand the circulation of stablecoins in Japan, but particularly USDC. Moreover, SBI DAH has made strategic investments in prominent players like Swiss digital asset bank Sygnum, Blockdaemon and the Tangem wallet. SBI Holdings, the parent company of SBI DAH, similarly maintains an extensive involvement in blockchain investments and activities.  In tackling the Japanese market, Chiliz will have to contend with a local competitor in the form of FiNANCiE. It has emerged to fill a similar role, fostering relationships with domestic sports teams, including J-League soccer clubs. By contrast,  Chiliz has provided broader international exposure. International competitors include Sorare and Dapper Labs, which concentrate on NFTs.

Japanese Firm Exec Underscores User Experience and Collaboration in Web3

Japanese Firm Exec Underscores User Experience and Collaboration in Web3Hiroshi Tsuruoka, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of UNCHAIN, a Japanese company specializing in Web3 entertainment services, recently underscored the significance of unique experiences and collaboration in the Web3 space. He shared these insights during his conversation with Webmaster Forum, a platform offered by Japanese web content provider Impress Corporation.UNCHAIN, Tsuruoka’s employer, aims to assist companies in entering the Web3 sphere and developing entertainment services that offer users a secure and enjoyable experience. The company provides comprehensive support, including planning, development, and marketing, tailored specifically for the Web3 environment.Photo by Shubham’s Web3 on UnsplashImportance of content qualityDuring the interview, Tsuruoka said that Web3 seems to have lost some of its previous popularity in Japan. Initially, the market experienced rapid growth driven by highly speculative products like NFT artworks and Play to Earn (P2E) games, which attracted participation from many Japanese companies. However, the subsequent downturn of global projects prompted the Japanese blockchain industry to reassess its strategy, recognizing the paramount importance of content quality.Meaningful experiencesAccording to Tsuruoka, the appeal of blockchain games extends beyond their profit potential, deriving more from the unique, enjoyable experiences they offer. He believes that gamers find it meaningful when they play a pivotal role in expanding the gaming market and giving rise to new gaming cultures. Moreover, the incorporation of NFTs in games allows users to retain ownership of their in-game items even if a company discontinues its service, fostering a deeper emotional connection between users and their virtual possessions. This emerging trend fosters a culture of creation, where users, operators, and creators come together in a collaborative space to generate secondary creations and new services. Users delight in actively contributing to this ecosystem and helping it grow.Tsuruoka recognizes that decentralization presents both advantages and challenges. On one hand, it offers individuals greater freedom. However, it also places the full responsibility of data management on the users themselves, in contrast to a centralized environment where the game provider handles data management.Tsuruoka advises against placing excessive emphasis on speculation and financial gain when discussing Web3. Instead, he encourages companies to prioritize delivering meaningful and valuable experiences to users. Tsuruoka believes that emotional experiences, such as owning a distinctive avatar through digital assets, hold tremendous potential in the Web3 realm.Web2 success firstHe asserts that no Web3 project can guarantee success without proving its worth in the Web2 space. Services that proved valuable in Web2 could experience significant growth when combined with Web3 elements.Strong relationshipsTsuruoka highlights the importance of establishing strong relationships between companies and users in the Web3 environment. While platforms like Discord can facilitate these relationships, it is crucial to strategically design user engagement, motivation, and enjoyment before launching a service. Effective community management in the Web3 space requires deep user engagement, which entails ongoing and intensive communication between operators and users.Tsuruoka emphasized the need to heed user feedback. Regardless of the service type, incorporating user opinions and collaborating with them can result in significant community and project growth, with corresponding increases in asset values. He added that this is not limited to the Web3 domain.
