Binance Thailand launches exchange services to the public

Web3 & Enterprise·January 17, 2024, 1:34 AM

Binance, in collaboration with Gulf Innova, a subsidiary of Gulf Energy Development, has officially opened its joint venture crypto exchange, Binance Thailand, for public trading.

Challenging the market incumbent

This move had been eight months in the making, signaling Binance's entry into the Thai crypto exchange market, following an announcement in 2023 that it intended to extend its offering to Thailand.

While Binance is the largest global crypto exchange platform, in Thailand it will be challenging the dominance of an incumbent exchange. Bitkub is based in Bangkok, currently holding around 77% of the market share, with a daily volume of approximately $30 million, primarily trading the Thai baht and Tether USDT pair.

Regulatory approval

The launch comes after Binance received regulatory approval from the local Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2023. Initially introduced on an "invitation-only" basis, the exchange is now accessible to all eligible users, with Binance having followed through on its plans to expand its presence in the region.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Binance TH announced the implementation of a dedicated order book tailored for Thai baht trading pairs. Users can seamlessly deposit and withdraw local currency through integration with domestic banking systems.

Binance has managed to push its service offering forward in Thailand despite regulatory concerns. In the aftermath of the company’s $4.3 billion settlement in relation to securities law violations with the authorities in the United States in November, concerns had been expressed that the charges brought against the firm in the U.S. would challenge the feasibility of the Binance TH venture.

At present, the platform focuses solely on spot trading, with a Binance spokesperson revealing ambitious long-term plans for additional services pending regulatory approvals.

Nirun Fuwattananukul, CEO of Gulf Binance, expressed gratitude, stating:

"We are deeply humbled to finally announce the launch of our local platform to the general public in Thailand. Over the past year, we have been working closely with Thai regulators, putting substantial effort into detailed planning."

Binance TH facilitates digital asset exchange services, collaborating with local banks in Thailand in enabling its service offering. The exchange has also partnered with Binance Kazakhstan for brokerage services, operating under the supervision of Thailand’s SEC.

Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, emphasized the strategic significance of the venture, stating:

“This is a strategic step forward, setting the stage for Thailand’s impending role as a key player in the global digital finance landscape.”

No access for foreigners

One limitation of the service pertains to foreign nationals. There is a restriction on access for foreigners residing in Thailand, as Binance TH requires a Thai National Digital ID to complete Know Your Customer procedures.

Despite regulatory challenges and tax implications on overseas income from stock and crypto traders announced by the government in September 2023, Binance remains optimistic about the future of crypto trading in Thailand.

The exchange released its themes for 2024 report on Jan. 15, outlining key growth areas such as the Bitcoin ecosystem, ownership economy applications, artificial intelligence, real-world assets, on-chain liquidity and institutional adoption.

Chinese Official Gets Life Sentence on Crypto Mining-Related Corruption Charges

Chinese Official Gets Life Sentence on Crypto Mining-Related Corruption ChargesA former Chinese government official, Xiao Yi, has been handed a life sentence for engaging in illicit business activities connected to a $329 million Bitcoin mining venture, together with other unrelated acts of corruption, according to Cointelegraph. The Intermediate People’s Court of Hangzhou City declared the verdict on Tuesday, finding Xiao Yi guilty of corruption and abuse of power.Yi, previously associated with the Jiangxi Provincial Political Consultative Conference Party Group and holding the position of Vice Chairman, faced charges stemming from a range of offenses. The corruption allegations dated back to 2008 and extended till 2021, involving instances of bribery.Photo by Tingey Injury Law Firm on UnsplashAdditional abuse of power chargesSimultaneously, the abuse of power accusations spanned from 2017 to 2021 and centered around providing financial and electricity incentives to Jiumu Group Genesis Technology, a company headquartered in Fuzhou that once managed over 160,000 Bitcoin mining machines.Prosecutors contended that Yi took deliberate steps to conceal the extent of the mining operation. He was said to have directed relevant departments to falsify statistical reports and manipulate electricity consumption classifications. During the period between 2017 and 2020, the energy consumption attributed to Jiumu amounted to 10% of Fuzhou’s overall electricity usage. Moreover, Xiao Yi’s involvement in facilitating crypto mining activities as a Party Secretary of Fuzhou city between 2017 and 2021 led to significant losses to public property, national interests, and people’s interests. This underscores the broader consequences associated with his actions and their impact on the community. The court ruling disclosed: “Yi pleaded guilty and repented, actively returned the stolen funds, and all the bribes and their profits have been seized.”Crypto mining and trading prohibitionIn the context of China’s current cryptocurrency regulatory stance, all forms of cryptocurrency transactions, exchange operations, and fiat-to-crypto onboarding, together with crypto mining, are prohibited. However, direct ownership of cryptocurrencies is not explicitly banned. In a recent development on August 3, a Chinese court declared a $10 million Bitcoin lending contract null and void based on the nation’s Bitcoin restrictions, without the possibility of legal debt recovery.Another incident on August 14 led to the sentencing of a Chinese national to nine months in prison for facilitating the acquisition of Tether (USDT) by an acquaintance, earning a profit from the transaction.Xiao Yi’s case reflects the Chinese government’s ongoing efforts to enforce its stringent stance on cryptocurrency-related activities, including Bitcoin mining, which has garnered increasing attention due to its energy consumption and potential economic implications.Bitcoin mining was outlawed in China in 2021. Many of its miners left the country, establishing operations in places like Kazakhstan and in North America. However, it’s understood that there is still a significant level of mining activity ongoing in China despite the ban.The life sentence serves as a stark warning against illegal Bitcoin mining and financial misconduct, aligning with the Chinese government’s intention to maintain control over its financial sector and prevent unauthorized financial activities. The detailed revelations about Yi’s role in facilitating crypto mining activities highlight the broader implications of his actions on the public and national interests.

SafePal Delves Into Korean Market Through Klaytn Partnership

SafePal Delves Into Korean Market Through Klaytn PartnershipThe Seychelles-based team behind non-custodial digital asset wallet provider, SafePal, has made its first attempt at conquering the Korean market through a partnership with South Korean enterprise blockchain, Klaytn. The collaboration will see the wallet provider support digital assets native to the Klaytn blockchain network. For Klaytn ecosystem users, it also means that they can access in excess of one hundred blockchains, which are already supported by SafePal’s non-custodial wallet. Both entities articulated their thoughts relative to the partnership, with SafePal doing so via a blog post published late last week. Meanwhile, the Klaytn project team expanded on the development in a post to its website on Tuesday.Photo by Mathew Schwartz on UnsplashKorean expansionKlaytn-native digital assets will be supported via SafePal’s mobile app, hardware wallet and its browser extension-based wallet. SafePal acknowledges the leading position that the Klaytn network takes in Korea, relative to the metaverse, blockchain gaming and other Web3 verticals. While SafePal already has 10 million users, this move demonstrates that it has plans on expanding that user-base to incorporate millions more, in this case Korea-based Klaytn network users.Alluding to that Korean expansion, Veronica Wong, Co-Founder and CEO of SafePal stated: “Klaytn is a leading blockchain in Korea for Web3 and DeFi, so this partnership made perfect sense, as we want users to access exciting opportunities in all established ecosystems globally.”Bringing Klaytn dApps to SafePal usersThe Klaytn project team is viewing the hook-up in the same manner. In its announcement it outlines that the collaboration can serve its purpose in “bringing in Klaytn’s next 10 million users with SafePal.” The partnership also serves to bring leading Klaytn dApps to that new user-base of 10 million. That includes on-chain instant swap protocol, Klayswap, blockchain play-to-earn game DeFi Kingdoms, Korean NFT marketplace Pala, leveraged yield farming project, Kleva Protocol and DEX aggregator Swapscanner.Conceived by the dominant messaging app provider in Korea, KAKAO, in 2018, the development of the Klaytn blockchain is now guided by the Klaytn Foundation. The project has set out a governance roadmap that will see the project achieve decentralization later this year.SafePal growth trajectorySafePal has been hitting its numbers when it comes to expanding its user base. Over the course of the past year, it has grown its user-base from 8 to 10 million. Its support for 100 blockchains results in overall support for in excess of 200,000 token types, including NFTs. That growth strategy belies further comments that Wong made relative to this latest collaboration:“While the self-custody offered by Web3 and DeFi is increasingly important amidst growing concerns about traditional financial systems, adoption is still hindered by language and geographical barriers. Klaytn is a leading blockchain in Korea for Web3 and DeFi, so this partnership made perfect sense, as we want users to access exciting opportunities in all established ecosystems globally.”With no let up in its growth strategy, SafePal followed up on Friday with an announcement that it had integrated the recently launched low latency, high throughput layer one SUI network and its native token, $SUI.
