Bitget pledges $10 million to empower women in Web3

Web3 & Enterprise·January 18, 2024, 2:59 AM

In a bid to foster gender diversity and inclusivity within the blockchain industry, cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has committed $10 million to invest in women-led startups in the Web3 and blockchain sector.

Blockchain4Her

The announcement, made at the Web3 Hub Davos event on Tuesday, a part of the World Economic Forum 2024, highlights Bitget's initiative in promoting equality in a rapidly advancing sector.

Bitget's research reveals a stark gender bias within the blockchain sector, with only 6% of startup funding directed towards female-led projects. Bitget’s Blockchain4Her project has been established as a direct consequence, in order to address this imbalance. Blockchain4Her has been designed to provide crucial support, mentorship and recognition to women in the industry.

The initiative will include tailored incubation programs, pitch competitions exclusively for women-founded startups and the Women in Blockchain Summit & Awards, aimed at acknowledging outstanding achievements by women in the blockchain space.

Recognizing the need for comprehensive measures, Bitget aims to confront the gender disparity by creating a nurturing environment through these multifaceted efforts. By offering specialized support for female entrepreneurs, the initiative aims to encourage greater involvement and leadership roles for women in the blockchain space.

Industry ambassadors

As part of the Blockchain4Her program, Bitget plans to invite industry leaders to serve as ambassadors, supporting gender diversity in the blockchain industry. These ambassadors will play a crucial role in advocating, engaging and driving positive changes, fostering an inclusive environment for women in the blockchain sector.

Bitget's commitment to addressing gender disparity in the blockchain industry is further underscored by its recent report on Web3 venture capital funding by gender. The report, published on Jan. 11, revealed that less than 7% of VC funding in the industry went to female-led startups, emphasizing the need for comprehensive measures to increase inclusiveness and accessibility for women in the blockchain sphere.

The company is itself leading from the front on the issue, with Gracy Chen as managing director, one of the few crypto exchange platforms headed up by a female executive.

Blockchain4Youth

It’s not the first time that the company has embarked upon a corporate social responsibility-themed project. It follows Bitget's earlier commitment to nurturing talent through the “Blockchain4Youth” initiative, which was announced in May of last year.

The $10 million initiative set out to serve the objective of “empowering and inspiring younger generations to use Web3 and crypto tools to create and engage in a decentralized space.” It focuses on providing courses through Bitget Academy, hosting university lectures on Web3, incubating innovative projects by young entrepreneurs and organizing hackathons for individuals under 30 to identify promising leaders.

A by-product of Blockchain4Youth also involved the company commencing to invest in Indian blockchain startups in November.

Bitget's Blockchain4Her initiative represents a significant step towards fostering a more equitable blockchain space. By championing inclusion and diversity, Bitget not only contributes to a fairer industry but also supports the sustainability and growth of the broader technology sector.

Fonte Capital launches Central Asia’s first spot Bitcoin ETF

Fonte Capital, an Astana-based investment management company that allocates capital across a broad range of asset classes, including digital assets, launched a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in Kazakhstan’s capital city on Aug. 13. The firm is based within the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC), with the launch prompting AIFC Governor Renat Bekturov to take to X to outline that the product offering is the first spot Bitcoin ETF to be listed within the Central Asian region.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashReflecting Bitcoin price dynamicsThe product has been listed on the Astana International Exchange (AIX) and has been assigned the ticker “BETF.” In announcing the offering, Fonte claimed that the ETF “aims to accurately reflect the price dynamics of bitcoin, striving to achieve this performance before fees and fund obligations.”Shares in the ETF are listed in U.S. dollars, with the fund having a “non-exempt” classification, meaning that it can be offered to a broad range of investors, including non-qualified retail investors. Each ETF share will be fully backed by Bitcoin, with Fonte having partnered with BitGo for digital asset custody.  Delivering institutional-grade accessTaking to social media, BitGo described the product offering as a “new era for digital assets” in Kazakhstan. The company asserted that through what it termed “U.S.-regulated cold storage,” the new fund is delivering institutional-grade access to Bitcoin within the region for the first time. Fonte pointed out that the fund “provides investors with a regulated and secure way to include Bitcoin in their investment portfolios without the complexities associated with holding and transferring the underlying asset.” This isn’t the first Bitcoin-related product that the AIX has listed. Back in 2021, it listed iX Bitcoin Exchange Traded Notes, with special purpose company iX Bitcoin SPC Limited acting as the note issuer.  The product differs from the Fonte ETF in that it is backed by shares of ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF, a future-based ETF first listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 2021. In comparison, Fonte’s product has the advantage of being directly backed by Bitcoin. The ETF’s backers have pointed out that there are further implications for the ETF’s shareholders. As the product is regulated by the AIFC, Fonte asserts that within that jurisdiction, holders of the product’s shares are protected from the potential reach of international sanctions. In this regard, the product offers further protection as it is not dependent upon overseas issuers.  Overall, the AIFC has played a key role in the development of crypto within Kazakhstan over the course of the last few years. In 2023, it awarded crypto exchanges Bybit and Binance approval to trade within the Central Asian nation.  Binance subsequently launched a local crypto exchange platform in Kazakhstan, achieving full licensing in October 2024. In June of this year, the authority granted its first license for the issuance of a fiat-backed stablecoin.  It emerged recently that Kazakhstan is working towards the establishment of a national crypto reserve, with the administrators of the country’s sovereign wealth fund expressing the desire to commence investment in crypto assets.

The firm intends to provide traders with a comprehensive suite of options for major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), Binance Coin (BNB), Solana (SOL) and Dogecoin (DOGE).  Crypto options are being offered in an effort to cater to the needs of institutional traders. Mario Gomez Lozada, CEO of PowerTrade, highlighted the synergy between BitMEX's deep market liquidity and PowerTrade's trader-centric technology. This strategic alliance aims to furnish traders with a seamless and high-performance trading experience, with the objective of meeting the demands of serious traders seeking effective and efficient trading tools. Taking to X, PowerTrade described the partnership as “a new era for options.” The firm outlined that although options only account for 3% of the crypto market, its expanding rapidly year-on-year. Not to be outdone, BitMEX also took to X, posting that “BitMEX invented the perp - now we’re reinventing options.”Photo by Viktor Forgacs™️ on UnsplashTaking on DeribitBitMEX made a name for itself in the industry by offering 100x leveraged perpetual swaps. It recently upped the ante to 250x for its Bitcoin perpetual swap prior to the halving. The company is now attempting to etch out a significant market share in the crypto options niche. To do so, it will have to compete with market leader Deribit. Deribit has been at the helm, accounting for 70% ($35.7 billion) of the $51.1 billion trading volume for Bitcoin options in April and maintaining its dominance since 2020. Despite challenges from large crypto exchanges like OKX and Binance, Deribit has held its ground. In discussion with The Block, BitMEX CEO Stephan Lutz said that the firm was targeting at least $500 million in trading volume within three months,  Zero trading feesIn a bid to attract traders to its new platform, BitMEX has devised a promotional campaign featuring zero trading fees on all options transactions throughout May. Moreover, the first 1,000 new traders joining the platform will receive a $20 bonus, further incentivizing participation. The platform also offers rewards based on trading volume, referred trading volumes and monthly trading competitions, injecting an element of competition and potential profit for active users. Upon conclusion of the promotional period, BitMEX's fee structure for options trading will align with its existing spot trading framework. This strategic move ensures a seamless integration of the options platform into BitMEX's ecosystem, providing users with a consistent and predictable cost model when trading across different digital assets.
