Markets·February 23, 2024, 3:17 AM

Crypto custodian Korea Digital Asset (KODA) has seen its custody assets exceed the $6 billion mark, equivalent to about KRW 8 trillion, according to game media outlet Kyunghyang Games.

Established in November 2020 through a collaboration between KB Bank, the blockchain venture capital firm Hashed and blockchain tech company HatchLabs, KODA provides custodial services for crypto assets. A custodial service provider refers to a third-party institution that manages virtual assets on behalf of clients. A leading provider of crypto asset custodial services

Having been offering one-stop crypto asset custodial services for companies and institutional clients since March 2021, KODA has become a notable virtual asset business operator in South Korea with it being registered with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

By the end of June 2023, KODA made up nearly 80% of the local custodial service market share, per FIU data. At the time, out of the total KRW 2.9 trillion in crypto assets held by 49 local custodial service providers registered with the FIU, KRW 2.3 trillion was managed by KODA. By December 2023, KODA announced it was managing KRW 8 trillion in crypto assets, with over 200 custodial wallets and about 50 institutional clients using its services.

Bracing for the potential approval of spot bitcoin ETFs in Korea

The demand for crypto asset custodial services is expected to rise as Korea’s ruling and opposition parties are pledging to integrate crypto assets into the traditional financial system, leading up to the general election in April. Major political parties are considering the possibility of allowing transactions of spot bitcoin ETFs and legalizing investment in crypto assets by private companies.

Cho Jin-seok, CEO of KODA, said that the integration of digital assets into the traditional financial system is an unstoppable global trend that no one can resist, and that KODA will be able to serve as a key crypto infrastructure if the local financial authority approves trading spot bitcoin ETFs.

Kim Seo-joon, CEO of Hashed, stressed the significance of preparing for the potential approval of spot bitcoin ETF transactions, noting how a number of spot bitcoin ETFs were released in the U.S. right after the approval. He added that KODA’s commitment to regulatory compliance and technological expertise would make it an essential partner in introducing virtual asset ETFs to the local market.

Coinone reports decline in customer inquiries due to improved user convenience

Coinone reports decline in customer inquiries due to improved user convenienceKorean crypto exchange Coinone revealed on Tuesday (local time) that the number of customer inquiries sent to its support center has nearly halved since it began introducing various updates to boost user convenience in the second quarter of this year. The exchange explained that it has been consistently collecting and analyzing customer feedback and then applying these insights to enhance its products and services.Photo by Petr Macháček on UnsplashTaking initiative to improve user experienceA recent analysis of voice of the customer (VOC) data collected by the support center up until this year’s third quarter showed that the overall volume of inquiries began to decrease in Q2, and the total number of inquiries in Q3 subsequently decreased by 24.7% compared to Q2. Notably, in September, the inquiries decreased by a whopping 45.5% compared to April. This translates to an average monthly decrease of about 11%.This trend can be attributed to ramped-up efforts for product convenience starting in Q2, which has had a positive impact on reducing customer inquiries. Earlier in May, during a short period of transition when Coinone changed its affiliated bank from Nonghyup Bank to KakaoBank, the exchange released notices with relevant information regarding transactions, deposits and withdrawals that made it easier for customers to navigate the transition. The number of related inquiries subsequently decreased by 86%.Furthermore, in June, queries regarding password recovery and mobile device authentication reset decreased by 58% and 65%, respectively, after Coinone provided simple guidelines for inactive customers to reset their passwords without having to contact the support center. Submissions to the support center for assistance with fiat deposits and withdrawals also dropped after the exchange added Naver as a channel for two-factor authentication (2FA) to its account setup system.Additional updatesOther noteworthy updates include the Coinone app version 3.0, which came with a new updated interface with five tabs — transactions, trading prices, charts, market prices and other information — for users to explore.

BitMEX Returns to Derivatives Arena with Prediction Market

BitMEX Returns to Derivatives Arena with Prediction MarketBitMEX, a name synonymous with the early days of crypto derivatives, has made a return to its core focus with the launch of a prediction market.Through this new product, the company aims to captivate traders by offering them the opportunity to wager on real-world events, effectively extending the boundaries of crypto derivatives trading.Photo by Amjith S on UnsplashBetting on the outcome of real-world eventsThis shift in direction is being overseen by Stephan Lutz who took the helm as CEO and group CFO in 2021.In a blog post announcing the product launch on Tuesday, the firm expressed its vision for the prediction market, asserting that it would introduce an entirely new dimension to crypto derivatives trading. The product is designed to diversify traders’ portfolios and yield returns based on predicting the outcomes of real-world occurrences, an offering that the company feels holds significant promise. Especially in bear markets characterized by subdued volatility, the prediction market could serve as a valuable instrument for traders seeking to enhance their strategies.Novel initial wagersBitMEX’s inaugural move into the prediction market sees the firm offer an array of contracts for traders to explore. Among those initial offerings are contracts enabling wagers on various outcomes, such as the percentage recovery rate of FTX’s bankruptcy claims and the likelihood of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approving a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) by October 17. These contracts underscore BitMEX’s intent in covering a wide spectrum of topics, with the firm promising to introduce more options in the near future. The prediction market holds the potential to revolutionize the way traders engage with real-world events, introducing a novel form of participation that transcends traditional trading boundaries. This launch has significant potential for BitMEX as it endeavors to reclaim its position in the competitive crypto derivatives market.Change of strategyUnder the stewardship of former CEO Alexander Höptner, BitMEX embarked on a diversification strategy termed “beyond derivatives,” delving into areas like spot trading and exploring new business avenues. However, the departure of Höptner in October ushered in a change in direction for the firm. The introduction of the prediction market now symbolizes BitMEX’s return to its foundational business model, with a renewed focus on derivatives. In May, the Seychelles-headquartered firm introduced perpetual contracts relative to SUI and PEPE tokens. Later that month, it launched a dedicated virtual asset service to Hong Kong-based customers. Hong Kong was its original center of operations when the company was first formed. It has since moved those operations to Singapore while maintaining its corporate presence in the Seychelles.BitMEX’s fresh foray into the derivatives space not only signifies a return to its roots but also presents traders with a means to trade relative to real-world events. By offering an eclectic range of contracts, the platform seeks to attract traders who crave more than conventional crypto trading. This strategic move could serve as a catalyst for BitMEX as it strives to regain its foothold in the competitive crypto sector.
