Com2uS Platform celebrates X-PLANET's first anniversary with NFT airdrop

Web3 & Enterprise·March 22, 2024, 1:55 AM

Com2uS Platform, a subsidiary of South Korean game publisher Com2uS Holdings, yesterday revealed its plan for a non-fungible token (NFT) airdrop. This event is part of a celebration marking the one-year anniversary of its rebranded NFT marketplace, known as X-PLANET.

Popular intellectual properties

The NFT marketplace underwent a rebranding in March of last year, aiming to improve its integration with Com2uS' XPLA blockchain mainnet. Named X-PLANET, the platform is envisioned as a new planet where users can "explore" and "play." By November 2023, it had become the top revenue-generating local NFT marketplace, thanks in part to popular intellectual properties like the B.O.P Universe and Choushinsei Flashman. The B.O.P Universe draws inspiration from Bung O Pang Tycoon, a mobile game centered around baking pastries, while Choushinsei Flashman is a 1980s Japanese TV series known for its live-action superheroes.

NFT airdrop event

To mark the first anniversary of its rebranding, X-PLANET is hosting an NFT airdrop event on its official website. The event kicked off on March 21 and will have another round on April 4, at 6 p.m. KST, when 365 "Lucky Star" NFTs will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis. Owners of NFTs bearing lucky numbers will have the chance to earn double points during a B.O.P Universe event, which continues until April 14.

Additional benefits are in store for those purchasing NFTs for the first time and those visiting X-PLANET’s Discord channel. Moreover, participants who spread the word about the anniversary event and the B.O.P Universe contest on social media will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a coffee coupon.

NFT marketplace and blockchain ecosystem

Lee Luda, the Head of the Web3 Platform Business Division at Com2uS Platform, highlighted that the recent event was designed to show gratitude to X-PLANET users who have shown their support since the platform's rebranding. Lee further stated that as the NFT marketplace representing the XPLA ecosystem, X-PLANET is committed to evolving into a user-friendly platform. Their goal is to create an environment that not only adds value but also provides entertainment, making it a welcoming space where anyone can participate and enjoy.

Recognized for its straightforward user interface and efficient trading system, X-PLANET has been introducing a collection of valuable NFT works across various domains, including art, games and K-pop. The NFT marketplace is actively pursuing collaborations with talented artists and prominent organizations to bring meaningful NFT content to its users.

Unprecedented surge in trading volumes on HashKey exchange

Unprecedented surge in trading volumes on HashKey exchangeHong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange HashKey has experienced an unprecedented surge in daily trading volumes over the course of the past week, reaching approximately $4.5 billion, a notable increase from its usual levels.Photo by Jungwoo Hong on UnsplashToken rewards programThe surge, highlighted in a report published by The Block on Monday, occurred on Friday, and is being attributed to the company’s token rewards program, according to a spokesperson from HashKey Group.A HashKey Group spokesperson clarified that the surge in volumes was a result of the company’s recent HSK rewards campaigns, which involve the distribution of HSK tokens or EcoPoints. Introduced in April, these incentives were designed to encourage trading activity on the platform. The spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to operating within the regulatory framework, stating:“At HashKey, we operate strictly within the regulatory framework, and any actions of misconduct are not tolerated.”Last Thursday, HashKey issued a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), detailing one of its incentive campaigns. The post announced the introduction of a DOT/USD trading pair and encouraged users to explore additional ways to earn through ongoing campaigns. Despite receiving only 15 likes, the post aimed to attract users with the promise of HSK rewards for logging in, trading and participating in the platform’s campaigns.Licensing approval in AugustHashKey had obtained the first license to offer retail crypto trading in Hong Kong in August under the new regulatory regime, with an upgrade of its type 1 and type 7 licenses. Officially opening to traders on November 1, it quickly garnered attention in the crypto community. In the same month, it also launched an app, offering full mobile trading capabilities. While daily trading volumes on Sunday dropped to $275 million, still higher than the usual levels but closer to the volumes recorded in its initial month, the significant spike on Dec. 1 was particularly noteworthy. Comparatively, Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, recorded $11.3 billion in volume over the past 24 hours.Wash trading ruled outSpeculation arose on X regarding the possibility of wash trading contributing to the sudden surge in volumes. Wash trading involves intentionally matching a large number of orders to create artificial trading activity. However, HashKey’s spokesperson dismissed these claims, stating that no misconduct has been detected.Justin d’Anethan, Head of Business Development in Asia for Keyrock, a crypto market-making firm, commented on the situation, stating:“Many people in the crypto space assumed wash trading was taking place… But it’s almost unbelievable.”He noted that if one wanted to appear more active, it would be done gradually, rather than in a single surge.Market sentiment and trading volume trendOver the course of the past 24 hours, the Bitcoin unit price has surged from $39,500 to almost $42,000, with Asian trading believed to have contributed significantly to that trading momentum. The overall crypto market capitalization has reached $1.5 trillion for the first time since early 2022. Bitcoin trading volume over the past 24 hours hit $39 billion, with a bitcoin market dominance rate of 51%.

Thailand’s Incoming Prime Minister Signals Crypto Embrace

Thailand’s Incoming Prime Minister Signals Crypto EmbraceIn a recent parliamentary decision on August 22, real estate magnate Srettha Thavisin emerged as Thailand’s forthcoming Prime Minister. Thavisin, acclaimed for his prior role as the CEO of Sansiri — one of Thailand’s major real estate developers — has a history entwined with the cryptocurrency sector, hinting at potential ramifications for the nation’s crypto landscape.Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashParliamentary selection winThe appointment came under the banner of the Pheu Thai Party, with Thavisin securing 482 votes out of 747 in the parliamentary endorsement.Thavisin’s ascent to power could potentially herald a significant shift in Thailand’s approach to cryptocurrencies, leveraging his involvement with Sansiri’s foray into the digital asset domain. Departing from his role as Sansiri’s CEO in April, Thavisin relinquished his 4.4% stake in the company, setting the stage for him to pursue a career in politics.Crypto firm investmentSansiri, under Thavisin’s leadership, undertook active participation in the country’s digital asset arena. Notably, in 2021, the company participated in a substantial $225 million fundraising round for XSpring Capital, a crypto-friendly investment management firm. This strategic partnership paved the way for XSpring to launch a fully integrated cryptocurrency trading platform in 2022, with aspirations to establish a presence among the top crypto exchange companies by 2025.Thavisin’s impact on the crypto sector goes beyond investment. His company also introduced the “SiriHub Token” via XSpring in 2022, presenting a real estate-backed initial coin offering (ICO) that extended 240 million tokens to the public. This duality of involvement from crypto firm investment to token issuance, demonstrates that the new Thai premier has not been afraid to get involved with crypto innovation at an early stage.Crypto airdrop proposalIt appears that Thavisin’s affinity for cryptocurrency transcends corporate endeavors, as his political affiliation with the Pheu Thai Party, which he joined in November 2022, introduced a novel proposition. The party proposed disbursing 10,000 Thai baht (approximately $300) to citizens, executed through digital currency transactions. The synergy between his cryptocurrency background and this proposal raises questions about the potential influence of his past on Thailand’s future crypto policies. As Thavisin’s administration prepares to assume office by the end of September, the extent to which his crypto engagement shapes the nation’s policies remains a topic of speculation. However, the confluence of his real estate expertise and cryptocurrency ventures offers a unique blend of experiences that might foster innovative approaches.Notably, Thavisin’s journey isn’t the sole instance of Thailand’s government engaging with the crypto industry. Earlier in 2023, Thailand’s cabinet introduced tax breaks for companies issuing investment tokens. These measures, announced in March, aim to generate 128 billion baht ($3.7 billion) from investment token offerings over the next two years.Political importanceThavisin’s perceived embrace of cryptocurrency in Thailand comes at a time when crypto and blockchain innovation is being supported by political candidates in multiple jurisdictions. In the United States, the Republican Party is holding a debate on Wednesday between its eight candidates for the presidential nomination, with several of them being pro-crypto.On the Democratic Party side, Robert F. Kennedy is pro-bitcoin, having recently stated that bitcoin is an exercise in extending civil liberty. Meanwhile, in Argentina, Javier Milei, a libertarian pro-bitcoin candidate, topped the poll in the country’s recent presidential primary.

South Korea seeks buyer for NXC shares tied to gaming giant Nexon

The South Korean government has begun the process of selling its stake in NXC, the largest shareholder of Nexon, a video game company originally founded in South Korea and now headquartered in Japan. According to the Seoul Economic Daily, which cited industry sources, the Ministry of Economy and Finance began a public sale process on June 30 for its shares in NXC. These shares were received as payment for inheritance tax from the family of Nexon’s late founder, Kim Jung-ju. In February 2023, Kim’s widow, Yoo Jung-hyun—who also serves as chair of the board at NXC—along with other family members, transferred 851,968 NXC shares to the government to settle the inheritance tax liability.Photo by Kelly Sikkema on UnsplashEarlier failed sale attemptsThe government’s latest attempt to sell the shares follows two previous efforts that failed, primarily due to high asking prices at the time. The current estimated value of the shares stands at 4.7 trillion won (approximately $3.47 billion), reflecting a 20% premium over their net value due to the rights associated with company control. However, the shares are expected to sell at a lower price, since acquiring them would not lead to actual control of the company—Kim’s surviving family still holds a majority stake in NXC. Industry insiders view Chinese tech giant Tencent as a strong contender to purchase the shares. However, Tencent recently denied reports from last month that claimed it had approached Kim’s surviving family to discuss a possible acquisition of Nexon. The company had also expressed interest in acquiring Nexon back in 2019 but ultimately did not take part in the bidding process. According to Chosun Ilbo, a Tencent acquisition is being viewed as a possibility, as the Shenzhen-based firm continues efforts to secure overseas intellectual property. One industry source noted that Tencent tends to invest in Korean game developers every three to four years. The source also mentioned that Tencent had approached Korean venture capital analysts specializing in gaming last year to gather information for a potential acquisition shortlist. If Tencent were to purchase all of the government-held NXC shares, it would become the second-largest shareholder in the company. Given its ongoing investments in the Korean gaming sector, the source said it is likely Tencent will participate in the sale process organized by the government. Nexon’s blockchain pushNotably, Nexon has been expanding its presence in the cryptocurrency space. According to data from Bitcoin Treasuries, the company holds 1,717 Bitcoin (BTC), acquired at an average price of $58,226 per coin. Beyond its BTC investment, Nexon is actively exploring blockchain technology through its Web3 IP-expansion project, NEXPACE.  This initiative features the MapleStory Universe ecosystem, along with MapleStory N, a PC-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that incorporates blockchain technology. Both projects are powered by the NXPC token. MapleStory was originally developed by Wizet Studio in 2003 and became part of Nexon when the company acquired the studio the following year.
