OKX scores payment institution license in Singapore

Leading cryptocurrency exchange OKX has acquired an in-principle approval from Singapore’s financial regulatory authority for a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license through its local arm, OKX SG.

Enabling broader service offering

According to a blog post published by the company on March 12, OKX confirmed the receipt of in-principle approval for the coveted license. The MPI license, issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Singapore's primary financial regulatory body, represents an important step forward for the company. Once granted the full license, OKX will be empowered to offer digital payment token services and facilitate cross-border transfers within Singapore.

 

A plethora of OKX executives took to social media to comment on the achievement. Hong Fang, President of OKX, expressed the company's long-standing interest in Singapore, describing it as a cornerstone of its global strategy. Fang emphasized Singapore's appeal to entrepreneurial ventures, citing its tech-savvy populace as early adopters. She praised the country's regulatory framework as "clear and thoughtful," enabling businesses like OKX to cultivate sustainable growth over the long term.

 

With this regulatory approval, OKX intends to concentrate on bolstering its spot product offerings in the Singaporean market. Fang outlined plans to forge local banking partnerships to enhance customer experiences and expand service offerings in the future.

 

In summarizing the company’s outlook, Fang wrote that OKX is looking to “build locally. Be compliant. Invest long-term.” OKX CEO Star Xu suggested that the firm intends to be a “long-term member of the Singapore fintech community” as a consequence of the approval.

 

Global market expansion

The company’s CMO, Haider Rafique, pointed out that this latest license approval follows hot on the heels of further expansion in venues like Dubai, Argentina and Turkey.

 

The in-principle license approval follows OKX's recent acquisition of a conditional license from Dubai’s cryptocurrency regulatory authority. On Jan. 16, the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) of Dubai granted OKX a license, enabling the exchange to provide regulated services as a virtual asset service provider within the region.

On Feb. 27 the firm launched OKX TR, catering to the needs of crypto users in Turkey. In the same month, the company launched its services within the Argentinian market.

 

MPI-licensed entities like OKX enjoy the privilege of facilitating multiple payment services, surpassing volume limitations prescribed for standard payment firms. This flexibility allows OKX to transcend the prescribed limits of three million Singapore dollars ($2.2 million) for individual payment services and a monthly cap of SG$6 million ($4.4 million) for multiple services.

 

Joining OKX in the pursuit of regulatory compliance, BitGo, a prominent crypto custody business, also received an in-principle approval from MAS. BitGo announced on Jan. 10 that it had secured initial approval, subject to fulfilling additional requirements stipulated by the regulator.

 

Several other notable cryptocurrency entities, including Crypto.com, Coinbase and Ripple, have already obtained complete payment institution licenses in Singapore.

 

OKX's attainment of in-principle approval underscores the ongoing drive among market participants towards regulatory compliance and expansion into key markets. The move should help the firm to position itself well for further market growth as the digital assets space continues to progress.

Grab partners with Solana ecosystem DePIN project to enhance mapping

NATIX Network, an open geospatial intelligence network built upon proprietary AI technology, has partnered with Southeast Asian superapp Grab to collaborate on autonomous driving technology and mapping. NATIX is a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) project that exists within the Solana ecosystem. Singapore-headquartered Grab offers a broad range of services via its app, including ride-hailing, package delivery and food delivery. It explained that the objective in this regard would be to combine Grab’s camera hardware and its AI-based map-making software stack with NATIX’s decentralized blockchain-powered mapping data.  Due to the nature of the services that it has offered in Southeast Asia since it was founded in 2012, Grab has, through necessity, become involved in mapping to enhance its service delivery. As a consequence, it has developed a suite of cameras including its KartaCam, a small action camera which can be mounted on bike helmets or car windshields, and a 360-degree standalone camera, KartaCam 2, with built-in sensors, AI image optimization and GPS capabilities. ‘Internet of Cameras’For its part, NATIX claims to have built the world’s largest on-street camera network. As part of the collaboration, NATIX will use Grab’s hardware and software technology to expand its “Internet of Cameras.” Posting on LinkedIn, GrabMaps set out its thoughts on the partnership, stating:”By combining GrabMaps' AI-powered mapping technology with NATIX's decentralised data network, we're enabling real-time, high-fidelity map updates across the globe. As part of this collaboration, NATIX will launch VX360, a device built on Grab's hardware platform that allows Tesla drivers to collect and share 360° vehicle imagery.” Appearing on the Unleashing DePIN podcast recently, NATIX Co-Founder and CEO Alireza Ghods outlined that NATIX will launch VX360, a proprietary device built by leveraging Grab’s existing hardware. He explained that this collaboration saves NATIX in terms of overall project cost and months of R&D, all of which enables it to get to market faster.VX360 enables Tesla drivers to capture and share 360-degree imagery.  Future potentialGhods spoke to the additional future potential that the collaboration holds: “The interesting part is that they have other types of devices as well, they have a dashcam, a 360 camera, and our plan is to definitely integrate all of this into our map making and data collection pipeline.” This is not the first partnership that GrabMaps has established related to mapping. Previously it formed collaborations with Microsoft’s Bing Maps, navigation and mapping app Mappls and location data specialist Loqate.  Ghods believes that NATIX can go one better than centralized mapping projects like TomTom and Google Street View. He told Cointelegraph that “a blockchain-based incentivization system provides better results in terms of frequency, participation, and coverage.” The NATIX co-founder asserted that such data can be gathered at a fraction of the cost via users’ devices.

3 UAE-based firms sign $3B tokenized real estate deal

MultiBank Group, a global financial derivatives company headquartered in Dubai, has partnered with two other United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based firms, real estate giant MAG and tokenized real-world asset (RWA)-focused blockchain infrastructure provider Mavryk, in a $3 billion tokenized real estate deal.Photo by Tierra Mallorca on UnsplashWhile a large proportion of MAG's business activities center around the Dubai real estate market, MAG Group is a multinational conglomerate with a portfolio that includes commercial and residential developments and high-end luxury real estate projects.  According to a press release published on May 1, this $3 billion deal implicates MAG’s luxury developments, such as The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Dubai and other properties located within the Keturah Resort and Keturah Reserve in the UAE’s most populous city. These properties will be tokenized and hosted on the blockchain through MultiBank.io’s regulated tokenized RWA marketplace. Mavryk will provide the necessary infrastructure, with the tokenized assets running on its blockchain network. The deal provides another indication of the growing role of tokenization, with it being the largest tokenized RWA deal to have been put together to date. The Mavryk Network testnet was launched in February, with Mavryk Network developer Mavryk Dynamics securing $5 million in funding to establish a tokenized RWA network economy. In this instance, Mavryk will provide support in terms of on-chain asset issuance and DeFi integrations. Not just a real estate dealTalal Moafaq Al Gaddah, senior executive vice chairman of MAG, said that the project “marks a milestone in broadening access to high-value developments and unlocking liquidity via blockchain.” Al Gaddah also commented on the MBG token, stating:“$MBG token provides ecosystem utility, including trading discounts, early access to properties, and a deflationary buyback-and-burn model.” MBG is a MultiBank utility token which features deflationary tokenomics. It will be used to enable staking and lower trading fees. The token is scheduled to be launched on June 2. MultiBank.io Founder and CEO Zak Taher highlighted the importance of the token launch alongside this tokenized real estate deal. He stated:“This isn’t just a real estate deal — it is a flagship use case for the $MBG token. By enabling seamless access to $3B in tokenized property, MultiBank becomes the bridge between regulated finance and next-generation investment infrastructure.” Dual utilityAl Gaddah referred to the duality of the tokenized real estate offering:“Tokenized assets issued by MultiBank will have dual utility. Within the MultiBank Group, they can be used as collateral for derivatives, creating a seamless bridge between traditional finance and tokenized assets.” RWA tokenization has been gaining momentum within the UAE recently. It emerged last month that the Dubai Land Department (DLD), a government agency responsible for the registration of real estate in Dubai, had signed an agreement with local regulator the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) to integrate tokenized real estate within existing systems.  Around the same timeframe, blockchain technology firm Serenity signed a partnership with Dubai’s MTA Real Estate to develop a tokenized real estate platform. Last year RWA-focused layer-1 blockchain project MANTRA Chain announced that it would tokenize $500 million in real estate assets in Dubai.
