As Excitement for First US Spot Bitcoin ETF Intensifies, South Korea Still Faces Mountain to Climb

Policy & Regulation·October 25, 2023, 8:35 AM

The price of bitcoin has surged significantly as it recorded an 18% increase in the past week, spurred by mounting anticipation surrounding the US’ first spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) propelled by asset management juggernauts BlackRock and Fidelity Investments — a threshold that had not been crossed in over a year. According to CoinMarketCap, bitcoin is trading in the upper $33,000 range as of 5 p.m. KST on Wednesday.

Ongoing buildup

The approval of a spot bitcoin ETF — long rejected or delayed due to a plethora of reasons like the volatility of cryptocurrencies and their susceptibility to market manipulation — would in the long run open up the possibility for institutions to earmark bitcoin as a major asset that can be integrated into the sphere of traditional finance. This would make bitcoin easier to handle and increase its exposure to traditional investors. “The mere possibility of this development marks a significant shift in the market landscape,” said an unnamed executive at a Korean asset management company in a news article by South Korean news outlet Maeil Business Newspaper.

BlackRock’s spot bitcoin ETF, the iShares Bitcoin Trust, was also listed on the US Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC)’s website with the ticker symbol IBTC on Monday before it mysteriously disappeared the following day. It has since been relisted on the website. The listing is “all part of the process of bringing ETF to market”, as explained by Bloomberg’s senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday.

Is a spot bitcoin ETF on the table for Korea?

However, Korean experts believe that there are still numerous hurdles to overcome in order for a spot bitcoin ETF to settle in Korea. In particular, some question whether cryptocurrency platforms that offer custodial services can even be classified as exchanges. There is also the issue of bitcoin’s varying prices across different exchanges. Its current price on Upbit, the country’s largest crypto exchange, is in the KRW 45.9 million range as of 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Local financial authorities have reportedly expressed skepticism about bitcoin ETFs for these reasons, suggesting a murky future for this development becoming a reality in Korea.

LG CNS Chooses Six Startups to Foster Innovation in Digital TransformationLG CNS, the information technology (IT) arm of South Korean conglomerate LG Group, said Tuesday that it has chosen six startups to nurture under its sixth annual Startup Monster program — a program dedicated to supporting technology startups that are capable of pioneering consumer values in the realm of digital transformation (DX). By directly contributing to their growth as startups, LG CNS also aims to secure them as future business partners.Photo by Milad Fakurian on UnsplashAmong those startups is Zkrypto, a company specializing in zero-knowledge proof technology — a method of providing the validity of a statement without revealing the statement itself. Zkrypto will work with LG CNS on security solutions and privacy protection services necessary for operating digital finance services such as digital wallets and security tokens. The two companies already established their relationship earlier last month when they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop blockchain-powered business models.Investing in startup growthUnder the program, the companies will undergo a six-month technology assessment as well as receive KRW 100 million (approximately $75,000) in funding to demonstrate the feasibility of technology integration into their businesses. LG CNS said that it would carry out the assessment by leveraging its extensive business references and technical resources along with assistance from other IT experts.“Through the Startup Monster program, we will continue to discover and nurture promising startups with innovative technologies and create an ecosystem where we can grow together,” said Jeon Eun-kyung, Executive Director of LG CNS’ Convergence Technology Research Institute.Participants from diverse industriesThis year’s recruitment attracted over 240 applicants, resulting in a highly competitive selection ratio of 40:1. Other selected startups besides Zkrypto include GradeHealthChain, Quantum Universe, Delivery Lab, mAy-I, and Circle Platform, which specialize in emerging DX technologies, such as big data analysis, artificial intelligence (AI) modeling, and extended reality (XR).GradeHealthChain is known for its health management app LOG, which analyzes health checkup results and medical information to allocate an overall health score. Users can provide these scores and other medical information to insurance companies partnered with GradeHealthChain to receive premium discounts on insurance. In turn, the insurance companies can use this data to accurately assess the customer’s health status and recommend optimal insurance products. LG CNS plans to work with GradeHealthChain to create services for insurance product recommendations. On the other hand, Quantum Universe specializes in the planning, production, and distribution of XR content. With LG CNS, the company will jointly develop digital twin technology that replicates physical objects in a digital environment for applications in smart factories and manufacturing. They are also pursuing marketing projects using metaverse technology.mAy-I and Circle Platform were chosen for the program for their impressive technical capabilities in data collection and AI modeling. Report: Vietnamese Crypto Investors Rely Heavily on Referrals

Report: Vietnamese Crypto Investors Rely Heavily on ReferralsWhile Vietnam has been leading the way in terms of cryptocurrency adoption among ordinary people, the decision-making process of Vietnamese crypto holders also sets them apart, according to a new report. The report, a collaboration between Vietnamese venture capital firms Kyros Ventures and Coin68, in association with Hong Kong-based Web3 firm Animoca Brands, reveals a striking trend. 76% of Vietnamese crypto holders base their investment choices on recommendations from friends and acquaintances.Photo by Silver Ringvee on UnsplashThe importance of referralsReleased on Wednesday, the report relied upon a survey involving 3,300 participants. A staggering 75.5% of respondents admitted that their crypto investment decisions were significantly “influenced by recommendations or referrals.” This figure stands at 2.5 times the equivalent percentage reported in the United States.Aside from word of mouth, Vietnamese crypto investors rely heavily on self-study, community groups, and media news as primary sources of information relative to crypto. Nearly 50% of survey participants indicated their reliance on these methods for staying informed about the crypto market.Market sentimentThe “Vietnam Cryptocurrency Market Report” for the first half of 2023 also sheds light on the sentiments of the crypto community. It indicates that 70% of survey participants believed that the bear market has already concluded or is approaching its end.Notwithstanding that, another data point could be interpreted such that market participants are still exercising an abundance of caution. Around 60% of respondents confirmed that they hold stablecoins as a significant constituent of their portfolios. Stablecoins are widely used by traders when exercising risk-off positioning.Interestingly, another finding of the report is the fact that an overwhelming 75% of respondents expressed a desire for increased regulatory intervention within the crypto sector. It’s unlikely that this is coincidental, given the number of high-profile crypto platform failures that took place in 2022.Vietnam leading adoptionChainalysis data confirms Vietnam’s dominant position globally in terms of crypto adoption and its impressive second-place ranking in decentralized finance (DeFi) adoption. Remarkably, more than 19% of adults in Vietnam own digital assets while Vietnam ranks among the top five countries when it comes to trading volume on global crypto platform Binance. However, this level of adoption stands in contrast with the limited educational infrastructure supporting it. Only nine educational institutions in the country offer blockchain courses. The survey also probed into user behavior within various crypto domains. The findings show a significant engagement in DeFi activities, with nearly 90% of respondents participating. By the end of 2022, there were in excess of 200 active blockchain projects in operation within Vietnam.GameFi, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), centralized finance (CeFi), and SocialFi are also popular among the Vietnamese crypto community, with engagement rates of between 55% and 91%. The research also found that users maintain a balanced preference between centralized and decentralized exchanges. The report concludes by highlighting the rapidly evolving local tech landscape and its synchronization with global trends. Largely, the report points to a positive sentiment in Vietnam relative to the future of cryptocurrency and Web3 innovation in the country.
