Korean Crypto Expert Claims NFTs and Security Tokens Shouldn’t Be a Priority for Investors Yet

Policy & Regulation·September 20, 2023, 7:35 AM

Although there has been a lot of speculation recently regarding the prospects of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and security tokens as lucrative investment opportunities, these topics should not be of concern yet, said Kim Dong-hwan, CEO of Korean crypto consulting firm Wonder Frame, at Tuesday’s 2023 FNTimes Investment Forum hosted in Seoul by the Korean Financial Times.

From a price-to-earnings perspective, these types of investments should not be of priority to the average investor, Kim said, stating that this argument is rooted in historical context. Bitcoin, the kingpin of cryptocurrencies, had its first breakthrough in 2012 when its price was around $13. Since then, its value has skyrocketed nearly 2,000 times. Those who profited from Bitcoin then went on to invest in Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. Ultimately, the money earned from Bitcoin was constantly circulating in the crypto market.

Grappling for liquidity

However, Bitcoin’s liquidity — the frequency at which assets are bought and sold, which can be deemed the most important aspect of investing in and trading cryptocurrencies — is currently down. Liquidity in the crypto market usually flows in order from Bitcoin first, to altcoins, then to NFTs, Kim explained, because investments in NFTs are made by people who hold cryptocurrencies, not Korean won. Therefore, NFTs, which have now experienced more than a 90% decline from their peak, must depend on Bitcoin’s price recovery for their own resurgence.

Securing liquidity for security tokens is also difficult, considering the fact that while these assets share common characteristics with cryptocurrencies, they are subject to strict regulatory oversight by financial authorities such as the Korea Exchange. Therein lies the difficulty in forecasting the prospects for security tokens.

Kim thus questioned whether there would be market makers or liquidity providers that would be willing to boldly step into the role of satisfying the market, given the close scrutiny of authorities such as Korea’s Financial Services Commission (FSC) and Financial Supervisory Service (FSS). Although crypto exchanges like Upbit act as market makers by facilitating daily trading worth trillions of won, speculation suggests that securities firms that are responsible for supplying security token liquidity may find it challenging to do the same.

Weak investments and negative perceptions of DeFi

Another concern for security tokens is fractional investments, which tend to be concentrated on assets of lower value. “Security tokens are fundamentally about dividing underlying assets and then selling them. However, in many cases, these underlying assets are of lower value or have no choice but to be traded this way,” Kim said.

Kim also mentioned the regulatory hurdles hindering decentralized finance (DeFi) in general, despite its reputed appeal. “DeFi is perceived by international organizations like the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the US Federal Reserve System, and the European Union (EU) as a public enemy that causes financial instability in the real world,” he said.

Taking all these factors into consideration, Kim recommended against investing in security tokens or NFTs at this time, given the current situation where even Bitcoin’s liquidity is at an all-time low. He suggested that, with market interest rates approaching 5%, unless there is a specific need to invest in virtual assets, it may be better to explore investment options positioned for higher interest rates.

Kim is an industry expert who has previously written articles for crypto news site CoinDesk Korea for four years and has taken on the role of Chief Business Development Officer (CBDO) at Blitz Labs, a virtual asset research firm. He founded Wonder Frame in 2022, where he currently works as a professional consultant.

Animoca founder: $200T crypto market within 10 years

The global cryptocurrency market is poised for unprecedented growth, potentially reaching $200 trillion within a decade, according to Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands, a prominent Hong Kong-based Web3 game software company and venture capital firm. 2-3x within 18 monthsCurrently valued at approximately $2.7 trillion according to data from crypto aggregator CoinGecko, the cryptocurrency market is set to double or triple in the near term, Siu predicted on The Valr Podcast on May 28. “In the near term — within 12 to 18 months — we can conceive of a doubling or tripling of the space,” he stated, expressing strong confidence in the industry's future milestones. Siu elaborated on his bold forecast, suggesting that over a five to ten-year period, the market could accelerate by 100 to 200 times, potentially reaching a valuation of $200 trillion or even higher. In conversation with Farzam Ehsani, the co-founder of Valr, a platform that allows users to buy, sell, store and transfer crypto assets, Siu said:“I think we could reach that kind of number within a decade.” This explosive growth, according to Siu, will be driven by billions of people becoming digital property owners within the Web3 ecosystem. Siu stated: “It is entirely conceivable that we’re going to have a billion property owners because we’re going to have a billion token holders. This is not possible in the physical world.”Photo by Pierre Borthiry - Peiobty on UnsplashAsia fastest growing marketSiu also pointed out the regional dynamics within the Web3 space, noting that Asia has emerged as the fastest-growing market. “Right now, the leading force in Web3 is clearly Asia,” he argued, citing robust adoption rates in regions such as Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Japan. In contrast, jurisdictions like the United States are lagging behind, primarily due to regulatory uncertainties. Siu pointed out that historically, the United States has tended to take a leadership role where new technology is concerned. Web3 is turning out to be the exception to that rule. With that, he thinks that it is Asia that will lead the way and that it will continue to lead for the foreseeable future where Web3 is concerned. Bullish on BitcoinHis optimism about the Web3 market's potential aligns with his bullish stance on Bitcoin, currently standing at a market capitalization of $1.3 trillion. Siu made another bold prediction recently, expressing confidence that Bitcoin would eventually reach $1 million. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $68,346. While that’s far from his $1 million unit price prediction, he did state at Web Summit Rio in April that it would do so “over time.”  That bullishness from the Animoca founder has also manifested itself within the company itself. In early May, the company announced its entry into the Bitcoin ecosystem by endorsing the Opal Foundation, a Bitcoin-centric protocol. At the time, Siu suggested that Bitcoin is now primed for Web3. Siu's projections reflect a broader optimism in the cryptocurrency industry, where rapid technological advancements and increasing adoption rates are expected to drive significant growth. As more individuals and institutions embrace digital assets, the potential for exponential market expansion becomes increasingly plausible.

AEON launches on BNB to expand crypto payments in Asia

AEON, a modular payment protocol that aims to standardize and unify crypto payments, has launched a QR code payment system on the BNB Chain, with a view towards expanding crypto payments in Southeast Asia. The project clarified in a press release published on Nov. 11 that its BNB-based QR code payment system has been established in collaboration with Terminus, a payment association project that bridges crypto and real-world transactions through banks, e-wallets and fiat settlement networks. The new service means that merchants can now access AEON’s payment system without having to acquire additional hardware, while crypto payments are settled in fiat currency. AEON believes that the new offering provides greater convenience for users and merchants, while also supporting the BNB Chain ecosystem through the promotion of a seamless payment experience at offline locations throughout the Southeast Asian region.Lara Jameson on PexelsIntegrating with Asian payment networksUsers can now rely on assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC) and Binance Coin (BNB) as a source of funds for payments, which can be made in-store by scanning a QR code via a network of merchants throughout Southeast Asia. Once a transaction is confirmed, funds are converted to fiat currency in real time. The offering minimizes friction for the merchant, making it easy for them to accept crypto as a means of payment. This scan-to-pay feature has now been integrated with national payment networks like VietQR, a money transfer service in Vietnam that enables customers to scan and pay across the mobile apps of the Southeast Asian nation’s banks. Similarly, AEON has integrated with another such service in Thailand known as ThaiQR, which is supported by a number of leading Thai banks.  Connecting Web2 with Web3In an article posted to X last month, Terminus outlined that acting as a “payment association” isn’t just a label but an attempt by the company to take an approach that seeks to connect Web2 with Web3 in a manner previously thought impossible. It believes that it is creating a powerful ecosystem by taking disparate payments providers and joining them together via a cohesive payments association. In bridging Web2 and Web3 Terminus says that it is laying “the groundwork for a future where payments are not only efficient but universally accessible.” Network integrations seem to be key where crypto payment solutions providers are concerned. With that, AEON has been active in bringing about other such integrations beyond this collaboration with Terminus. In September, it entered into a partnership with Singapore’s Alchemy Pay, a crypto-to-fiat payment gateway, with a view towards combining Alchemy’s expertise in payments with AEON’s payments infrastructure and protocol. In October AEON integrated with the TRON layer-1 blockchain network. The collaboration means that decentralized applications within the TRON ecosystem can accept crypto payments over AEON’s payments infrastructure.
