Hana Financial Group said Sunday that the South Korean financial holding company held a proclamation ceremony for the second Hana Digital Power On Project last Thursday — a program designed to cultivate young digital talent in emerging technologies like blockchain and big data — at the Hana Global Campus in Incheon.

Support from tech juggernauts

The program, sponsored by the Korean Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) and several tech giants such as Google, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and SK Telecom, was first held last year. This year’s project saw the participation of over 50 individuals forming 16 teams, Hana said.

Competitions and training

A contest centered around new digital technology was also held on the same day. Participating teams proposed ideas for solving issues that may arise in the financial industry using artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, and big data technologies.

Winning teams will be rewarded up to KRW 10 million (approximately $7,500) in prize money along with the opportunity to visit several information technology companies. They will also have the chance to participate in a hackathon competition organized by SK Telecom to further develop their ideas.

They will also undergo a four-week digital education program put together by Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, as well as practical training provided by the Hana Institute of Technology. Notably, graduates of the program will be exempt from going through the initial screening process when applying for positions at Hana Financial Group.

Officials including Lee Bok-hyun, Governor of the FSS; Lee Hoon-kyu, Director of Future for Youth Foundation; and Ham Young-joo, Chairman of Hana Financial Group, were in attendance.

“We will strive to cultivate young digital talent and create employment opportunities for the youth,” said Hana Chairman Ham. FSS Governor Lee also added that there is a need to secure interdisciplinary talents capable of generating innovative ideas.

Crypto Oasis Founder Thinks UAE Set Up For Crypto Success

Crypto Oasis Founder Thinks UAE Set Up For Crypto SuccessAs the dust settles on 2023's Dubai Fintech Summit, which took place last week, one takeaway offered by the Co-Founder of blockchain ecosystem firm Crypto Oasis is that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has set itself up for success where crypto business is concerned. In speaking with crypto publication CoinTelegraph on the fringes of the Dubai Fintech Summit, Crypto Oasis Co-Founder and Managing Partner Saqr Ereiqat suggested that the regulatory infrastructure that the UAE has put in place provides an ideal foundation upon which crypto companies can develop and prosper.Photo by Mo Ismail on PexelsRegulatory infrastructureEreiqat pointed to some key fundamentals that crypto entrepreneurs and start-up founders should look at when deciding on the location that will best meet their needs and help to optimize their route to market and ultimate success. This includes the regulatory infrastructure. The UAE authorities and regulators at a national level, together with their colleagues within the regulatory agencies in the Emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, have been doing some heavy lifting in this regard over recent months. They’ve all been working on establishing a workable regulatory framework, and as part of that, a licensing process. In the case of Dubai, its Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) has started to issue preliminary or Minimum Viable Product (MVP) license approvals that enable crypto startups to get started, while providing them with a pathway towards obtaining Full Market Product (FMP) licensing at a later stage.Talent poolThe other key requirements that Ereiqat set out were digital infrastructure alongside an ability to attract and provide a pool of talent relative to the crypto assets space. In respect of these key considerations, Ereiqat believes that the UAE hits the target in each case.“The UAE’s regulatory framework is more streamlined and business-friendly compared to the complex and fragmented regulatory environment in the US,” he told the crypto media firm.To enhance these fundamentals, Ereiqat also alluded to a depth of capital that could potentially find its way into UAE-based crypto businesses, easing these start-ups’ efforts in executing on funding rounds as they look to achieve growth.Ereiqat maintains that the interest in the region is already evident, citing a data-point that suggests there are 1,800 Web3-centric businesses already operating in the region, with more than 8,000 people working for those start-up businesses. Speaking to that reality further, he said:“The Dubai FinTech Summit was a significant event that brought together stakeholders from the fintech industry […] The presence of crypto and Web3 leaders and projects at the event is an important indicator of the growing interest and adoption of these technologies in the region.”This enthusiasm and belief in the existence of the right Web3 business environment in the UAE was echoed at that event by both Coinbase Founder and CEO Brian Armstrong and Ripple Founder and CEO Brad Garlinghouse. Both industry figures featured as keynote speakers at the event. Armstrong alluded to the potential of Coinbase establishing a base in Abu Dhabi while Garlinghouse announced the opening of a Ripple office in Dubai.

Bitcoin pullback tests sentiment as analysts revisit long-term targets

Despite Bitcoin’s recent decline, a South Korean analyst says investors’ trust in the market remains intact. He added that a U.S. crypto market structure bill, which Congress could approve as early as December, may give investors a chance to buy the dip ahead of a potential rebound. According to Etoday, Hong Sung-wook of NH Investment & Securities, one of South Korea’s major brokerage firms, noted that the crypto market has given back all gains made since mid-October, with Bitcoin briefly slipping below $100,000. Most altcoins also saw steep declines, erasing the advances they posted following roughly $19 billion in liquidations around Oct. 10. In this environment, Solana’s year-to-date performance has turned negative despite the recent launch of spot Solana ETFs in Hong Kong and the U.S., while Ethereum has similarly surrendered its earlier gains.Photo by Michael Förtsch on UnsplashContext from past declinesHong framed the latest pullback in a historical context. Since 2018, Bitcoin has recorded a daily closing price drop of more than 20% on seven occasions. The latest decline of about 21% from peak to trough, he said, is broadly in line with previous downturns. He added that Bitcoin is now less likely to experience the extreme volatility seen in earlier years, citing growing institutional participation and its increasing use in so-called “debasement trades,” or hedges against fiat currency inflation. Building on this, Hong attributed the recent weakness primarily to the liquidation wave and the temporary hit to sentiment. However, he argued that confidence could recover faster than in past stress events, emphasizing that trust in the market has not been fundamentally damaged, unlike in prior downturns triggered by unexpected “black swan” shocks. Policy progress could lift market moodIn the near term, Hong pointed to progress on the U.S. crypto market structure bill as a potential catalyst. Further movement on the bill, he said, could help improve sentiment, similar to the supportive reaction seen around the passage of the stablecoin GENIUS Act. Other market observers have expressed a comparable view on Bitcoin’s outlook. BeInCrypto underscored three key factors supporting its stance in an analysis published on FXStreet. First, citing Glassnode’s Accumulation Trend Score, it noted that Bitcoin has managed to hold above the $100,000 level thanks to a balance between whale sell-offs and continued accumulation by other investors. Second, expectations for U.S. interest rate cuts projected for December are seen as another supportive element. Third, Bitcoin continues to trade above its 50-week moving average (WMA), a technical level that has underpinned the market since BTC moved above it in 2023; even when brief sell-offs have pushed prices below this line, buyers have stepped in to restore it by the weekly close. Warning signs of weakening momentumAt the same time, signals of moderating momentum have emerged. Another BeInCrypto report pointed to CryptoQuant’s Bitcoin Bull Score, an on-chain metric that gauges the asset’s upside potential, which fell to zero on Nov. 6, its lowest level since January 2022, just before the market entered its last major bearish phase. This more cautious tone is reflected in institutional forecasts as well. Crypto financial services firm Galaxy Digital last week lowered its year-end price target for Bitcoin from $185,000 to $120,000. The firm cited heavy whale sell-offs, shifting investor focus toward AI, gold, and stablecoins, and the weak performance of Bitcoin-focused digital asset treasury (DAT) companies as key reasons for its downgrade. Even so, Galaxy Digital said it continues to view Bitcoin as a structurally strong asset. From a longer-term perspective, some high-profile experts have also trimmed their expectations. According to Decrypt, Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood told CNBC she now sees Bitcoin reaching about $1.2 million in a bullish scenario by 2030, down from her previous $1.5 million target. She attributed the revision mainly to the rapid growth of stablecoins, which are expanding faster than Bitcoin and emerging as a new payment method, a trend she suggested could dilute some of Bitcoin’s potential price momentum over time.

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following SurgeReddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.Photo by Mike Petrucci on UnsplashCrypto.com token listingThe Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.Surge acknowledgedIn response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.Terms of service changeMarket analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution. While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.
