Web3 & Enterprise·August 09, 2023, 6:45 AM

Korean Web3 gaming studio Ret Games said Tuesday it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, to support a blockchain company acceleration program spearheaded by Incheon Technopark’s Blockchain Center.

Bolstering blockchain startups

The two firms will team up as a single operator of the accelerator program that will supply Incheon-based startups and small companies with the resources required to grow their blockchain businesses and establish Incheon, a city next to the nation’s capital of Seoul, as a blockchain hub. They will also be joined by a third member of the operator — on-chain risk rating solution developer Undefined Labs.

“We plan to work with Binance to operate an efficient and innovative acceleration program for Incheon-based startups, fostering their growth and development,” said Kim Sung-yoon, CEO of Ret Games.

Binance will provide global networking and business consultations in areas such as business modeling and blockchain technology development, while Ret Games will contribute its blockchain infrastructure and development. Additionally, Undefined Labs will provide comprehensive insights into the blockchain industry, covering technology, market trends, and use cases.

Five companies for the acceleration program were chosen by Incheon Technopark — AO2, Bemuse, enterBlock, Swan Electronics, and Asia Auto Pacific. They will begin receiving support worth 20 million KRW (approximately $15,000) starting this month.

The operator will be required to monitor the progress of these companies during the course of the program, which will end on November 30.

Second operator

There will also be another operator for the program besides the consortium, which solely consists of venture capital firm Nanuhm Angels. It will enable participants to test their business models by granting them access to Rotonda’s launchpad. Rotonda is a subsidiary of the Korean crypto exchange Bithumb and operates the Web3 Burrito Wallet.

Koscom strengthens ties with brokerages to boost security token platforms

As the South Korean capital market eyes the burgeoning potential of security token offering (STO) businesses, Koscom, a financial IT company, is increasingly coming into focus among securities firms for its dedicated STO platform. With four securities companies already in partnership, Koscom is actively seeking to expand its collaboration network further. Koscom is a technology subsidiary of Korea Exchange, the country’s only securities exchange operator.More partnerships with securities firmsAccording to its press release published a few weeks ago, Koscom inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Yuanta Securities Korea, the South Korean branch of the Taiwanese retail broker. Through the partnership, the two entities pledged to collaborate on developing blockchain platforms and discovering new STO projects.  The MOU between Koscom and Yuanta is the fourth STO-related partnership Koscom has inked with a securities company. Koscom's other three brokerage partners are Kiwoom Securities, Daishin Securities and IBK Securities. With over four decades of experience in managing ledgers for brokerages, Koscom is highly skilled in constructing technical infrastructure for the capital market. As the operator of its own blockchain platform, this fintech company has been developing blockchain technology and acquiring relevant expertise.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashSecurity token issuance and distributionThe necessity for blockchain-based STO platforms provided by companies like Koscom for brokerages stems from regulations set forth by the Korean financial authority. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) mandates that the issuance and distribution of security tokens must be carried out by separate entities. This regulatory framework necessitates a platform that enables securities firms to connect and interact with each other. Koscom offers a joint STO platform designed to streamline transactions between brokerages, improving cost-effectiveness. In light of this, the financial IT company concentrates on developing such platforms with the aim of laying a solid foundation for the emerging STO market. According to local media outlet Etnews, Koscom has set its sights on completing the platform development within the first quarter, with plans to address additional requirements from brokerages subsequently. Striving to expand its network of partnerships to include companies both large and small, Koscom recognizes that a more diverse array of participating firms can enhance the efficiency of token issuance and distribution, which would in turn accelerate the adoption of STOs. Koscom’s strategy offers its partners an opportunity to test its STO infrastructure before the relevant legislation governing the management of security tokens is passed at the National Assembly. Regarding this development, Kim Sung-hwan, Head of the Digital Business Division at Koscom, said, “Koscom’s joint STO platform is emerging as an alternative method for brokerage firms to venture into the security token business. Factors such as costs and workforce requirements have made it difficult for many firms to proceed independently.” He added, “We will provide full technical support for our platform users, allowing them to focus on identifying reliable underlying assets for security tokens.”

Metaplanet aspires to acquisition of digital bank

The CEO of Japanese hotel operator turned Bitcoin treasury company, Metaplanet, has suggested that the firm may consider acquiring a digital bank in the future. Simon Gerovich, the firm’s CEO and a former Goldman Sachs banker, told the Financial Times that part of the second stage of its overall strategy may involve “acquiring a digital bank in Japan and providing digital banking services that are superior to the services which retail now is getting.”Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashBitcoin gold rushGerovich explained that phase one of Metaplanet’s plan involves participating in what he considers to be “a bitcoin gold rush.” He added: “We need to accumulate as much bitcoin as we can . . . to get to a point where we’ve reached escape velocity and it just makes it very difficult for others to catch up.” Other firms are jumping on the bandwagon, as within a very short timeframe, 140 companies around the world have adopted a Bitcoin treasury strategy. Metaplanet currently weighs in as the fifth-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin globally. Right now, the company holds 15,555 BTC. Its target is a holding of 210,000 BTC, which equates to around 1% of the total Bitcoin supply. Based on current pricing, such a holding would be worth in the region of $23 billion. Acquiring cash-generating businessesOnce the company has accomplished its Bitcoin accumulation goals, it plans to move on to phase two, acquiring cash-generating businesses while leveraging its Bitcoin holdings in order to do so. Using Bitcoin as collateral, Gerovich said that Metaplanet will “get cash that we can use to buy profitable businesses.”  While inroads are being made with regard to the acceptance of Bitcoin as a corporate reserve asset, it is earlier days still for its acceptance as collateral. Last month, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) in the United States, ordered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, key government-sponsored players in the American mortgage market, to explore the treatment of Bitcoin as eligible collateral for mortgages. Standard Chartered and crypto exchange OKX launched a pilot program earlier this year geared towards the use of crypto for collateral purposes. Gerovich talks in terms of Metaplanet’s phase two plan playing out at a time “when bitcoin, like securities or government bonds, can be deposited with banks and then they’ll provide very attractive financing against that asset.” The Metaplanet CEO stated that he expects the Bitcoin accumulation phase of the plan to play out over a period of between four and six years. The Tokyo-listed firm started accumulating Bitcoin in 2024. Some market participants are backing Metaplanet’s strategy with their own money. Global investment management firm Capital Group recently became Metaplanet’s second-largest investor. Bitcoin treasury criticsHowever, the emergence of Bitcoin treasury firms has also drawn quite a few detractors. Some critics point out that many of these companies have a negative operating income. Market analyst Caleb Franzen asserted that even after buying Bitcoin, they’re still junk companies. Others point out that too many firms have jumped on the Bitcoin treasury bandwagon, making the prospect no longer attractive. Fakhul Miah, managing director of GoMining Institutional, is also concerned about copycats. He told Cointelegraph that ”if these smaller firms crash, we could see a ripple effect that hurts Bitcoin’s image.”

Korbit Joins Hands with Shinhan Card and Good Neighbors for NFT Campaign

Korbit Joins Hands with Shinhan Card and Good Neighbors for NFT CampaignKorean crypto exchange Korbit said Thursday that it is participating in the Cambodia Youth Independent Tuk-tuk Transportation IG Group organized by the Good Neighbors Global Impact Foundation to help create jobs and support economic stability for youths in Kampot, southern Cambodia. To do so, the exchange has launched a campaign with Korean credit card company Shinhan Card and the Good Neighbors Global Impact Foundation to issue environmental, social, and governance (ESG) donation certificates minted as non-fungible tokens (NFTs).Photo by Markus Winkler on UnsplashTuk-tuks, or auto rickshaws, are the main mode of transportation in Cambodia, offering a larger job market for youths who are looking to become financially independent. Yoo Tae-hyun, Head of the Platform Business Group at Shinhan Card, expressed his hopes that the campaign will empower the youths and help them become more independent.Campaign participationShinhan cardholders who wish to participate in the campaign can select “Tuk Tuk Donation Certificate NFT Campaign” found under the Areumin section in Shinhan’s app service Shinhan pLay. They can then make a donation with their card or card points and apply for an NFT. Korbit said that it would airdrop all NFTs to donors at the end of the campaign in December, which can be verified on Korbit’s NFT marketplace and Shinhan pLay app’s MyNFT service. The images minted on the donation NFTs, which depict Cambodian youths on tuk tuks, are a contribution from Park Hye-geun, an artist who has worked on children’s books, educational materials, and more.Notably, during a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony last Monday, the three entities opted for an NFT certificate confirming their partnership instead of directly signing a document as a means to further implement NFTs into their collaboration.Boosting ESG efforts“We are pleased to contribute to creating a trend of making donations through NFTs and will continue to uphold our ESG management to have a positive impact on society,” said Oh Se-jin, CEO of Korbit. Meanwhile, Hyun Jin-young, CEO of the Good Neighbors Global Impact Foundation, applauded Korbit’s efforts to promote a culture of donation and address global social issues through the use of NFTs. He also stated that he looks forward to various technological collaborations with Korbit in the future.Korbit has previously worked with Shinhan Card on various cultural and artistic ESG activities, such as hosting an art fair in April in Seoul, where some 200 artists showcased their artworks.
