Huobi Delists USDD Stablecoin Pairs

Markets·June 27, 2023, 12:44 AM

Huobi Global, the Seychelles-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange, has made the decision to delist ten trading pairs, primarily involving tokens used in transactions with the USDD stablecoin issued by the TRON DAO Reserve.

That’s according to an announcement published to Huobi’s website on Monday. These tokens are supported by TRON founder Justin Sun, who also acts as an advisor to Huobi. The delisting, effective from June 29, will impact several tokens, including the Cardano blockchain token ADA, Solana’s SOL, ApeCoin’s native token APE, MATIC from Polygon, FIL from Filecoin, and ETC from Ethereum Classic.

Unregistered securities

All of these tokens were offered on the Houbi platform in pairs with USDD. Additionally, trading pairs involving ARPA, GAS, QTUM, and ZKS with Bitcoin will also be removed from the platform. Huobi stated that these changes are aimed at providing users with an improved trading experience.

Originating from China, Huobi has played a significant role in spot and derivatives trading for digital assets. The decision to delist these tokens follows their classification as unregistered securities in recent lawsuits by the US Securities and Exchange Commission against Binance and Coinbase. Prior to Huobi, Robinhood and eToro had already removed some of these tokens from their platforms.

Stablecoins are designed to maintain a stable value by pegging them to less volatile assets like the US dollar. They achieve this by holding equivalent reserves of cash and cash-equivalent assets as collateral. Stablecoins are widely used by traders for transferring funds between exchanges and as a hedge against price volatility. This makes them some of the most heavily-traded tokens in the crypto space.

USDD stability

USDD, the stablecoin at the center of this delisting, currently ranks as the eighth largest stablecoin by market capitalization, with approximately $750 million. Huobi is the primary exchange for buying and trading USDD, according to CoinGecko, a crypto market data provider. USDD is backed by various digital assets such as Bitcoin, Ether, and TRX, and it is issued by the TRON DAO Reserve. The TRON DAO Reserve operates as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), utilizing blockchain technology to automate voting and transaction processes.

USDD is an algorithmic stablecoin, with the assets held in backing the coin over-collateralized to a level of 170%. Despite this, the stablecoin has had issues in maintaining its US dollar peg from time to time. The issue has been that the token is partly backed by the TRX token, the native token of the TRON ecosystem. If TRX backing is discounted, the stablecoin is only 49% backed.

Reports indicate that Sun acquired a controlling stake in Huobi through a Hong Kong-based asset manager, reportedly paying around $1 billion in November. However, Sun hasn’t provided any details of any such ownership stake.

Huobi’s decision to delist these trading pairs reflects the evolving regulatory landscape and the need for exchanges to ensure compliance with securities regulations. By removing tokens that have faced legal scrutiny, Huobi aims to maintain a robust and compliant trading environment for its users.

Bitdeer Poised to Go Public Despite Delays

Bitcoin mining company Bitdeer Technologies Group is finally set to go public on the Nasdaq this Friday after a series of delays. The Singapore-based firm, which offers cloud mining services, has been in a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger process with Blue Safari Group. Drawn-out merger processBlue Safari Group filed for three extensions within six months last year, the last extension being a year long. The deal was originally expected to close in November 2021. The stopping block for the latest extension was insufficient time to get shareholder approval. However, Bitdeer Technologies Group revealed in a statement that shareholder approval has now been filed with the SEC.The merger was finally approved at an extraordinary general meeting of Blue Safari’s shareholders on April 11. The results of the vote will be included in a current report on Form 8-K to be filed by Blue Safari with the SEC. The deal is expected to close on April 13, 2023. Upon closing, Bitdeer Technologies Group will remain as the combined company, and its shares will begin trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “BTDR” on April 14.Bitdeer CEO Linghui Kong said, “Today marks a significant milestone for Bitdeer, leaving us poised to list on the Nasdaq and equipped to seize the growth opportunities ahead of us. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far and look forward to embarking on the next chapter of our journey.” The firm operates six mining data centers globally, with an aggregate electricity capacity of 775MW at the end of 2022. Surviving crypto winterBitdeer Technologies Group, backed by Bitmain founder Jihan Wu, offers cloud mining services, and is participating in a market that has been impacted by market volatility. However, miners that have survived are doubling down on expansion efforts. Yesterday, for example, the U.S. mining firm CleanSpark announced the purchase of 45,000 new mining machines for $144.9 million.Bitdeer will be part of a growing list of Bitcoin mining firms listed on Nasdaq, joining the likes of Riot Blockchain, Marathon Digital, and Canaan. Green miningRecently, the cryptocurrency mining industry has witnessed significant growth in green mining efforts. Terawulf, a US-based company, recently announced that its nuclear-powered mining facility, Nautilus, will come online soon. When fully operational, Nautilus is expected to have a hash rate of 1.6 exahashes per second (EH/s). The facility will run on nuclear power, which will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the mining operations. The energy-use of crypto mining has been coming under scrutiny relative to its carbon footprint and the demands it places on the power grid. In what many in the crypto space have called a “hit piece” targeting mining, the New York Times took aim at the industry on Monday. Bitdeer took to Twitter to call out false claims made by the publication relative to its use of energy during a 2021 winter storm.Bitdeer’s journey to becoming a publicly-traded company has been fraught with delays, but with shareholder approval in place, the company is ready to enter the public markets.

CoinFLEX Effects Partial Repayment of SmartBCH Debt

CoinFLEX Effects Partial Repayment of SmartBCH DebtCoinFLEX, a Seychelles-based crypto yield platform that operated the BCH to sBCH cross-chain bridge, has taken a significant step towards its restructuring plans by partially repaying its debts to SmartBCH Alliance.Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on PexelsBitcoin Cash sidechainAs part of the repayment, SmartBCH, a Bitcoin Cash sidechain compatible with Ethereum, received distributions from CoinFLEX, including approximately 4.28 million rvUSD ($750,000), 652,000 USDC ($652,000), and 6,834 BCH ($1.6 million). Notably, 80% of the received USDC has been swapped into Bitcoin Cash, while the remaining portion has been reserved to cover legal and operational expenses. SmartBCH currently holds a total of 10,758 BCH.The repayment to SmartBCH comes amidst a significant surge in the price of Bitcoin Cash, which has witnessed a remarkable increase of over 110% in the past seven days. This surge has positioned Bitcoin Cash as a top performer among major currencies in the crypto market, according to data from CoinGecko.Bitcoin Cash, along with other Bitcoin forks, has been benefiting from the overall rise in the cryptocurrency market. The increased interest can be attributed to the flurry of spot Bitcoin ETF filings that have taken place recently. The positive developments surrounding CoinFLEX and Bitcoin Cash have also had a ripple effect on associated tokens. $FLEX and $OX, tokens connected to CoinFLEX, have experienced notable increases in value, rising by 53% and 65% respectively over the past week.CoinFLEX itself has been undergoing a significant restructuring process that was approved by the Seychelles Courts on March 6. The exchange initially suspended withdrawals in June 2022, citing extreme market conditions and uncertainty related to a counterparty.CoinFLEX was one of several crypto firms affected by the collapse of the Terra ecosystem in May 2022, resulting in the loss of over $40 billion in investor value within a short period. In September, the company revealed its restructuring proposal, which involved offering over 65% of its equity to creditors and allocating 15% to employees.OPNX rebrandLast March, CoinFLEX rebranded itself as Open Exchange (OPNX) following the approval of its restructuring plan. The founders of CoinFLEX, Mark Lamb and Sudhu Arumugam, are collaborating with Kyle Davies and Su Zhu, the co-founders of the bankrupt crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), on the new Dubai-based venture.SmartBCH has announced its intention to open an account on OPNX and gradually convert rvUSD into Bitcoin Cash through the exchange. It is worth noting that, as part of the restructuring terms, SmartBCH is entitled to common equity in CoinFLEX and one board seat, although it has not received these benefits at present.Additionally, SmartBCH has burned 33,365.67 sBCH tokens, returning them to the old bridge address. As a result, the total sBCH in circulation on the sidechain now amounts to 67,756.766.To further enhance stability, SmartBCH has entered into an agreement with CoinFLEX to assume responsibility for maintaining the 1:1 peg between sBCH (the sidechain’s native token) and BCH.

Korea Exchange to conduct CBDC pilot test in H2

Amid the heightened excitement about the potential incorporation of virtual assets into the traditional financial system, the Korea Exchange (KRX), the country’s only securities exchange operator, plans to run a pilot test on central bank digital currency (CBDC) transactions using distributed ledger technology (DLT). The pilot test is scheduled in the second half of this year, as part of KRX’s effort to respond to rapidly evolving financial technologies, Yonhap Infomax reported.  The KRX is targeting the carbon trading market for this pilot test, aiming to develop a DLT-driven carbon trading system. The objective of this initiative is to check the feasibility of applying the Delivery versus Payment (DVP) to carbon credit trading facilitated by dedicated tokens. The project will be undertaken in cooperation with the Bank of Korea (BOK), with whom the KRX signed a memorandum of understanding last year to forge digital financial infrastructure. Additionally, the exchange is planning to create a cloud-based settlement and payment system for brokerage and non-brokerage firms.Photo by Marcin Jozwiak on UnsplashLG CNS, an integrated security system provider, and Koscom, a financial IT company, will supervise the CBDC pilot program. They are tasked with conducting a comprehensive assessment of the entire process, from developing the decentralized ledger payment system to assuring its quality.  Broad application of DLTA DLT system records all transactions on a peer-to-peer network and verifies them through every participant. This eliminates the need for a central authority, thereby increasing its reliability and transparency. Currently, the DLT is of particular interest to many financial institutions worldwide, including the SIX Swiss Exchange. These financial institutions are actively experimenting with CBDC to improve the security and efficiency of their DVP settlements.  In particular, the carbon credit market is experiencing a significant integration with the DLT. A KRX official said that the exchange plans to test the maturity of DLT systems and the interoperability between the BOK’s network and those of other organizations. This will evaluate DLT’s effectiveness within the carbon credit market. The person added that this pilot test aims to establish technological standards regarding the CBDC payment and blockchain network registration, which will provide a critical reference for future technical experiments in the industry.
