Ripple Collaborates with Hong Kong Regulator in RWA Tokenization

Policy & Regulation·May 18, 2023, 11:49 PM

In a demonstration of an extended use case, Ripple, the real-time gross settlement system, currency exchange, and remittance network, has announced that it has been selected by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to showcase a real world asset (RWA) tokenization solution.

Real world asset (RWA) tokenization

In a press release published on Thursday, the San Francisco-based firm outlined that the objective of its participation in the HKMAs inaugural e-HKD Pilot Program is to showcase a particular approach to real estate tokenization. In principle the e-HKD project is a central bank digital currency (CBDC) scheme.

Ripple is one of sixteen firms that will participate in the program. Among the other participants are HSBC, one of the largest banking and financial services institutions in the world, British multinational bank Standard Chartered, and Bank of China (Hong Kong).

For its part, Ripple will partner with Fubon Bank, a subsidiary of one of the largest financial holding companies in Taiwan. The e-HKD Pilot Program will feature a series of pilots conducted through several industry players with a view towards carrying out in-depth research into application, implementation, and design issues relative to the e-HKD.

Real estate tokenization is a leading example of RWA tokenization, which overall is anticipated to become a multi-trillion dollar industry by the end of this decade. Its plan is to build the solution on a private and secure ledger, guided in principle by the same technology that the company has utilized for XRP, the native token of the Ripple ecosystem.

Illiquid assets

The company points out that people’s homes are usually one of their primary assets. Notwithstanding that, unlocking value in real estate can be problematic, having considerable friction. The idea is that this illiquid wealth can be unlocked through tokenization. It’s a concept that is seeing a lot of interest from competing projects. Start-ups like Securitize and Provenance Blockchain would be among a long list of start-up firms that see the potential in the tokenization of RWAs.

In Asia, Japanese trading and investment firm Mitsui has gotten involved in the tokenization of real estate through its Alterna investment platform. Tokeny and CoFund offer other examples of innovators that are pioneering real estate tokenization.

In its press release, Ripple outlined that it aims to use its technology in this particular instance to enable Hong Kong citizens to experience the faster and more efficient release of equity relative to real estate.

James Wallis, Ripple’s VP of Central Bank Engagements & CBDCs, expanded on this idea further:

“The Asia Pacific region has many forward-looking regulators such as the HKMA, who are looking to leverage the capabilities of blockchain and crypto technology. It’s a huge honor for Ripple to be one of the select few organizations participating in the HKMA’s e-HKD Pilot Programme. We now have the opportunity to demonstrate how real estate asset tokenization could be brought to the citizens of Hong Kong, and are confident that our fully integrated solution will be an industry-first use case demonstrating the power of leveraging a CBDC for real estate equity asset release.”

Japanese Exchanges Canvas Regulator to Permit 10x Leverage

Japanese Exchanges Canvas Regulator to Permit 10x LeverageJapan’s cryptocurrency exchanges are advocating for looser regulations on margin trading, despite the global digital asset market crash experienced last year.According to a report published by Bloomberg on Monday, The Japan Virtual & Crypto Assets Exchange Association has revealed that many industry insiders are seeking leverage limits of four to 10 times for retail investors.Currently, customers are limited to doubling their exposure through borrowing. Genki Oda, the Vice Chairman of the association, believes that relaxing the leverage rule could enhance Japan’s appeal to crypto and blockchain companies, thereby stimulating increased trading activity.Photo by Su San Lee on UnsplashOngoing discussionJapanese digital asset exchanges are currently engaged in discussions to establish a consensus on the recommended leverage limit. They are planning to present their proposal to the Financial Services Agency (FSA) as early as next month. While Japan has made some efforts to ease certain cryptocurrency regulations, such as token listing and taxation, the overall regulatory environment is considered strict. The FSA expects crypto firms to provide solid justifications for loosening margin trading caps, demonstrating how it would contribute to the government’s objective of expanding blockchain-based industries. However, the agency remains open to discussions with digital asset businesses on the matter.Plummeting trade volumesPreviously, Japanese crypto platforms offered leverage up to 25 times, resulting in annual margin trading volumes of approximately $500 billion in 2020 and 2021. However, after the FSA imposed a limit of two times to curb excessive speculation and protect investors from amplified losses, trading volumes plummeted by 75% in 2022.In other parts of the world, digital asset exchanges typically offer spot margin trading with leverage ranging from five to 10 times the initial deposit, depending on local regulations. Some platforms even offer more aggressive lending options, often associated with speculative behavior that can generate waves of greed and fear within the crypto market.Oda argues that digital asset volatility has decreased since 2020 and asserts that Japanese exchanges are well-prepared to assist investors in managing the risks associated with margin trading positions. However, any relaxation of leverage rules is not expected to occur before 2024.Leverage dangersLast year’s global cryptocurrency downturn exposed risky practices and resulted in numerous bankruptcies. Regulators worldwide have responded by implementing new rules and regulations that address the lessons learned. While leverage might be in the interests of the exchange operators, many industry commentators have warned that leverage brings about market weakness.Caitlin Long, Founder and CEO of Custodia Bank, has been one such commentator, warning that massive leverage “built an industry of insolvent intermediaries” on a “foundation of sand”. It’s commonly believed that leverage leads to unsustainable market bubbles rather than iterative organic market growth. In 2022, an index tracking the top 100 cryptocurrencies partially recovered, showing a 33% increase since the beginning of this year. However, the market still faces challenges, as institutional and individual investors have exited, leading to reduced liquidity and lower expectations for price volatility in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Ondo Finance announces APAC expansion

U.S.-based crypto startup Ondo Finance, a financial infrastructure firm that concerns itself with the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs), has officially revealed its intention to expand into the Asia Pacific (APAC) area, with the inauguration of its first office in the region. In a press release published by the company on Sunday, Ondo clarified that the expansion is a direct response to the escalating interest in digital assets throughout Asia. That interest the company attributes to factors such as a flourishing crypto community, shifting regulatory environments and a growing appetite for exposure to U.S. assets.Photo by Florian Wehde on Unsplash40% market shareAt present, Ondo Finance holds a 40% share of the global market where tokenized RWAs are concerned. That market share has been driven by its three main tokenized product offerings: OUSG, designed for exposure to U.S. Treasuries; OMMF, facilitating exposure to U.S. money market funds; and USDY, positioned as a yield-bearing alternative to traditional stablecoins. These products serve as a conduit for global investors to access U.S.-based asset classes in tokenized form, aligning with the rising trend of digital asset adoption. To spearhead its APAC expansion initiative, Ondo Finance has appointed Ashwin Khosa as the vice president of business development in the region. Khosa brings nearly a decade of experience in Hong Kong-based institutional business development, having worked with multinational financial services company Citi, alongside key crypto firms such as Tether and its sister company, Bitfinex. His expertise encompasses both on-chain finance and a profound understanding of the APAC market. Khosa stated: “The team is top-notch and the mission of bringing real world assets onchain is extremely important. I look forward to working closely with partners in the region to help investors gain access to this next generation of high-quality assets.” Founded in 2021 with roots tied to the Goldman Sachs Digital Assets team and supported by leading venture capitalists including Founders Fund, Pantera Capital and Coinbase Ventures, Ondo Finance is looking to solidify its position as a dominant force in this newly emerging market on the back of nearly 40% of the global market share in tokenized securities. Nathan Allman, the founder and CEO of Ondo, expressed his excitement about the expansion, stating:“We’re very excited about our expansion into APAC. There is an active and rapidly growing crypto community and an appreciation for the type of high-quality exposure to US assets that our tokens provide.” Suspected token dumpIn a related development on Monday, on-chain sleuths have presented data that may indicate a sell-off of $11 million worth of ONDO tokens, the project’s native token. 20 million tokens were sold, with the suggestion that the token unit price fell in tandem with that market activity. Earlier on Monday, the token traded at $0.3062. At the time of writing, it's trading at $0.25. This expansion into the APAC region follows a string of pivotal developments for Ondo, including the revelation of its strategic roadmap and partnerships within the Ondo ecosystem. Additionally, the Ondo Foundation has introduced a points program and a proposed unlocking of its ONDO token, marking an integral part of the company's ongoing growth and development.
