Shapella Upgrade to Have limited Impact on ETH’s Selling Pressure

Markets·April 13, 2023, 6:06 AM

The Shapella upgrade on the Ethereum network scheduled to take place on Wednesday will only have a limited impact on the selling pressure on ETH, according to a report by the research center at Korean cryptocurrency exchange Korbit.

Shapella upgrade

One of the key features of the Shapella upgrade is to allow withdrawal of staked ETH. This upgrade follows September’s Merge upgrade that switched the Ethereum network’s consensus algorithm from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, significantly reducing electricity consumption.

Impact on selling pressure

To predict the impact of the Shapella upgrade on the selling pressure on ETH, the analysts at Korbit Research calculated the amount of time it takes for all the ETH staked as of March 22 to be withdrawn. They believe this calculation is relevant because withdrawals of staked ETH could trigger bulk sales, potentially imposing a greater selling pressure on ETH.

According to the findings, the daily sell volume for the first three days is expected to be 300,700 ETH, 0.254% of the circulating supply. This volume will gradually decrease to 43,000 ETH for the next six months and to 29,000 ETH for the following six months, each corresponding to 0.035% and 0.024% of the circulating supply, respectively.

All in all, bulk selling of ETH is not likely, considering it will take about a year and five months for all the staked ETH to be withdrawn and that the amount of withdrawable ETH will stay relatively low for each period. Furthermore, since this analysis assumes an extreme case, the market will be able to effectively handle the volume over the six month to 18 month period.

4 other reasons

In addition, Korbit Research outlined four other aspects that limit the selling pressure on ETH.

Firstly, there is some concern that the selling volume of ETH may increase due to unstaking resulting from the cessation of staking services at American crypto exchange Kraken. However, a decrease in the number of validators on the Ethereum network will raise the base reward. This may prompt those who unstaked ETH to stake them on other platforms, rather than selling them.

Second, ETH locked up at liquidity staking protocols such as Lido Finance and Rocket Pool provide liquidity for representations of staked ETH. These platforms allow users to stake fewer than 32 ETH for rewards. According to a February Binance Research report, 57.7% of ETH stakers enjoy liquidity and rewards. Therefore, there may be a limited impetus to divest of staked ETH.

Third, since only 41.1% of ETH stakers are seeing profits as of the time of writing the report, the remaining stakers would have to risk losses when withdrawing ETH. This suggests that those not yet seeing profits are more likely to keep ETH staked. Furthermore, Dune Analytics data shows that most of the ETH stakers with gains staked ETH when its price was relatively low, which indicates that they participated in staking in early days. Shivam Sharma, the author of the aforementioned Binance report, states that these ETH stakers are likely “some of the strongest Ethereum believers.”

Lastly, despite the Shapella upgrade, ETH withdrawals at different staking pools may not be initiated immediately. This could limit the circulation of withdrawable ETH, which in turn would hinder the selling pressure on ETH.

Macroeconomic factors

The Korbit researchers concluded their paper with a note that the selling pressure on ETH will be more influenced by macroeconomic factors than technical factors. They added that a possible downturn in the overall economy and corrections in risky asset markets might lead investors to sell ETH.

Japan’s Kumamoto City Bolsters Innovative Blockchain Startups

Japan’s Kumamoto City Bolsters Innovative Blockchain StartupsIn February this year, the city of Kumamoto in Japan organized the Kumamoto City Pitch 2022–2023, an event designed to bring together startups, established companies, and venture capital firms to promote business growth, according to Japanese tech media ASCII STARTUP.Photo by Christian Chen on UnsplashPromoting innovative startupsWith its inception in 2021, the Kumamoto City Pitch has been dedicated to promoting innovative startups with exceptional business models and unique technology. Its objective is to nurture local startups, build communities, and expand business sectors to strengthen the city’s growth. The event featured presentations from ten companies, including four that had been accepted into the Kumamoto City Acceleration Program “HIGO CANVAS.” The program offers support to projects based in Kumamoto that focus on areas such as cryptocurrency, blockchain, and virtual reality. Among the four accepted companies, two were involved in web3 and blockchain, while the others were working on medication guidance support through user-friendly pillboxes and digital transformation of manufacturing factory management.Web3-based marketing toolOne of the two blockchain-focused projects was Warashibe, a developer of Web3-based marketing tools. Its main product is a blockchain-powered marketing tool called “BADGE,” designed to enhance marketing efficiency.BADGE allows users to manage coupons and apps from retail stores in their own wallet. In turn, stores can reduce costs associated with producing and operating coupons and apps. Additionally, stores can analyze spending habits and other data from the wallet to identify target customers for promotions, enhancing the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns.Warashibe has achieved over 20 successful implementations, some of which involved leading manufacturing companies such as Daihatsu Motor, a major automobile engine manufacturer, and Ricoh, a renowned imaging and electronics company. Beyond coupon management, BADGE offers features like membership cards, credentials, and graduation certificates. The company is also currently developing services to analyze target consumers and manage advertising.Blockchain biz challengesIRISA is another startup exploring the blockchain sector. Initially, the company aimed to develop a social media platform incorporating blockchain games. However, the project changed direction due to challenges arising from the limited number of blockchain gamers and the blockchain oracle problem. The latter issue refers to the inherent limitations of blockchains in accessing data outside the network, also known as off-chain data.

Coinone reports decline in customer inquiries due to improved user convenience

Coinone reports decline in customer inquiries due to improved user convenienceKorean crypto exchange Coinone revealed on Tuesday (local time) that the number of customer inquiries sent to its support center has nearly halved since it began introducing various updates to boost user convenience in the second quarter of this year. The exchange explained that it has been consistently collecting and analyzing customer feedback and then applying these insights to enhance its products and services.Photo by Petr Macháček on UnsplashTaking initiative to improve user experienceA recent analysis of voice of the customer (VOC) data collected by the support center up until this year’s third quarter showed that the overall volume of inquiries began to decrease in Q2, and the total number of inquiries in Q3 subsequently decreased by 24.7% compared to Q2. Notably, in September, the inquiries decreased by a whopping 45.5% compared to April. This translates to an average monthly decrease of about 11%.This trend can be attributed to ramped-up efforts for product convenience starting in Q2, which has had a positive impact on reducing customer inquiries. Earlier in May, during a short period of transition when Coinone changed its affiliated bank from Nonghyup Bank to KakaoBank, the exchange released notices with relevant information regarding transactions, deposits and withdrawals that made it easier for customers to navigate the transition. The number of related inquiries subsequently decreased by 86%.Furthermore, in June, queries regarding password recovery and mobile device authentication reset decreased by 58% and 65%, respectively, after Coinone provided simple guidelines for inactive customers to reset their passwords without having to contact the support center. Submissions to the support center for assistance with fiat deposits and withdrawals also dropped after the exchange added Naver as a channel for two-factor authentication (2FA) to its account setup system.Additional updatesOther noteworthy updates include the Coinone app version 3.0, which came with a new updated interface with five tabs — transactions, trading prices, charts, market prices and other information — for users to explore.
