Meeting institutional investor needs

Institutional interest in secure and alternative avenues for exposure to digital assets continues to build momentum. It’s likely with that in mind that Wintermute Asia is strategically expanding its derivatives product offerings with this latest move. It’s also no surprise that Wintermute’s Singapore-based team was involved in this development, given a recent expansion of its Singapore base and the fact that its derivatives business is dealt with in Singapore.

Presently, Wintermute Asia provides vanilla options in BTC, ETH and various altcoins, featuring expiration periods ranging from 1 day to 6 months. The platform also caters to more sophisticated needs with the inclusion of exotic options.

Evgeny Gaevoy, CEO of Wintermute Group, expressed enthusiasm about Wintermute Asia’s evolving product offering, stating:

“Wintermute Asia is excited to offer a range of OTC derivatives solutions to our counterparties that can accommodate all of their trading needs. Our growing suite of derivative instruments allows investors to easily hedge and manage risks, generate yield, and gain synthetic exposure to the underlying digital assets.”

The move towards facilitating options block trades aligns with the increasing diversification of institutional portfolios into the digital asset sector. Giovanni Vicioso, Global Head of Cryptocurrency Products at CME Group, emphasized the significance of the partnership with Wintermute Asia. He commented:

“We are pleased to provide Wintermute and its counterparties with access to our highly liquid, regulated suite of benchmark cryptocurrency futures and options on bitcoin and ether.”

Involving TradFi heavyweights

CME is a cornerstone TradFi financial derivatives exchange, first established in 1898 and headquartered in Chicago in the United States. Its CEO Terry Duffy pushed back against proposals from convicted fraudster and FTX Founder Sam Bankman Fried in 2022 to alter the futures clearing model on the basis that such a move would introduce significant risk into the financial system. A year on from the failure of FTX and many other crypto platforms, a move towards involving established TradFi firms like CME, as Wintermute is doing, is far more appealing to institutional investors.

Sam Newman, Digital Assets Head of Broking at TP ICAP, acknowledged Wintermute as another participant in block trading CME Group cryptocurrency products. TP ICAP, a key player in digital asset broking services since 2020, has been instrumental in price discovery and liquidity through global coverage on regulated exchanges. Newman expressed excitement about witnessing crypto-native firms like Wintermute accessing traditional products and services, indicating the market’s maturation.

Earlier this year, CME Group upgraded its BrokerTec Stream from version 1.5 to 2.0. The upgrade aims to enhance performance and reduce latency for clients, introducing features such as sweepable matching and firm price improvements. Recently, CME became the second largest bitcoin futures exchange, second only to global crypto exchange Binance.

UK Watchdog Adds Crypto Exchanges to Warning List

UK Watchdog Adds Crypto Exchanges to Warning ListThe UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has expanded its warning list to include nearly 150 digital asset companies, including crypto exchanges HTX and KuCoin.Photo by Maxim Hopman on UnsplashPromotion without approvalThese firms have been added to the list due to their promotion of services in the UK without obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals. The move comes as the FCA strengthens its oversight of the cryptocurrency sector. The FCA recently broadened its rules on financial promotions, effective from October 8, to encompass crypto-asset service providers, regardless of their geographical location. This means that all crypto platforms are now obligated to display clear risk warnings to UK-based consumers and adhere to more rigorous technical standards. Additionally, they must implement a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period for new customers.Exchanges respondIn response to the inclusion of their platforms on the FCA’s warning list, both HTX and KuCoin issued statements. A spokesperson for HTX, known until recently as Huobi, clarified that the firm does not operate or market its services in the UK. KuCoin, on the other hand, acknowledged that it doesn’t operate in the UK but expressed its commitment to adapt its products and services to ensure compliance with the relevant laws and regulations in each country.Another exchange, OKX, alongside global exchange Binance, have both indicated that they are working towards complying with the FCA’s regulatory requirements in respect of marketing. The FCA issued a generic warning message for both HTX and KuCoin, stating:“This firm may be promoting financial services or products without our permission. You should avoid dealing with this firm.”Non-compliance with the FCA’s regulations can result in severe penalties, including takedown requests for websites and apps, substantial fines, and potential legal action, which could lead to imprisonment. It’s worth noting that HTX Advisor, Justin Sun, has encountered regulatory challenges in the past. In March, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accused Sun of fraud and market manipulation related to TRX, the native cryptocurrency of his Tron blockchain. Despite holding licenses to operate in various jurisdictions, HTX’s website does not specifically mention the UK as a prohibited venue.KuCoin has its platform restricted in several countries, including the US, Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Canada’s Ontario province. Notably, the UK is not listed among these restricted locations. The FCA’s decision to rapidly identify and publicize crypto firms violating the expanded rules underscores increasingly stringent regulatory requirements. The regulator is continuously updating its list of violators as new infractions are uncovered. In August, the UK regulator published data that demonstrated that only 13% of crypto businesses who have applied to trade in the UK have been offered permits to do so.Lucy Castledine, the FCA’s Director of Consumer Investments, emphasized the dynamic nature of the list, which is constantly evolving to keep pace with emerging issues within the crypto sector. As the FCA takes a more proactive stance in overseeing crypto businesses, the warning list serves as a tool for consumer protection, signaling the importance of adherence to regulatory standards in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

South Korean Prosecutors Fail to Recover Do Kwon’s Assets

South Korean Prosecutors Fail to Recover Do Kwon’s AssetsSouth Korean prosecutors have disclosed that they have been unable to find the millions of dollars that Do Kwon, CEO and Founder of Terraform Labs, made from the crypto business.©Pexels/GratisographyOverseas assetsThe latest development in the case suggests that Kwon may have tried to hide his assets overseas, making it more challenging for authorities to recover those funds.Prosecutors claim that Do Kwon transferred funds from his personal accounts to overseas bank accounts under his mother’s name. Additionally, he allegedly used cryptocurrency to purchase real estate and other assets in the United States, which he then registered under his mother’s name. This tactic is commonly used by those seeking to evade detection and protect their assets from seizure.Binance halt requestSouth Korean authorities are understood to have reached out to global cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, requesting it to halt any withdrawal request associated with Kwon. Binance confirmed to CoinTelegraph that it is cooperating with the request, stating: “We provided Korean law enforcement authorities with the requested assistance. Since we cannot comment on ongoing law enforcement investigations, for any further comment please reach out to the prosecutors.”Blockchain forensicsThe situation surrounding Do Kwon’s case is not uncommon in crypto. Although there are blockchain forensic analysis specialists who collaborate with government authorities in tracing digital assets, the task is not without its difficulties. By analyzing the blockchain, investigators can trace the flow of funds and identify the individuals involved in illicit activities. This technology has already been used in a number of high-profile cases, including the 2014 Mt. Gox hack and the 2020 Twitter hack.Nevertheless, the anonymous nature of blockchain transactions makes it much easier for individuals who engage in fraudulent or illegal activities. However, as cryptocurrency becomes more mainstream, governments around the world are cracking down on those who attempt to take advantage of the system.Tightening regulationIn South Korea, authorities have been working to regulate the cryptocurrency industry and protect consumers from fraud. The government has implemented a number of measures, including requiring cryptocurrency exchanges to register with the Financial Services Commission and banning anonymous transactions. Despite these efforts, however, incidents of fraud and embezzlement continue to occur. The fight against cryptocurrency-related crime is far from over. As the industry continues to grow and evolve, criminals will continue to find new ways to exploit the system. It is up to regulators and law enforcement officials to remain vigilant and adapt to these changes in order to protect consumers and ensure the integrity of the financial system. In the case of Do Kwon, the investigation is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what the final outcome will be. Prosecutors estimate total proceeds of Do Kwon’s alleged crimes to amount to 91.4 billion won ($71 million) while 414.5 billion won ($316 million) has been identified relative to Terraform Labs more broadly.
