Bitpowr looks to Asia for further growth following $200M milestone

Bitpowr, a digital asset custody and blockchain wallet provider that concentrates on the African market, is looking to expand in Asia having achieved a recent crypto transaction milestone.

 

$200 million in total transactions

The company has exceeded $200 million in total transactions processed since its launch in January 2022. The milestone demonstrates the firm’s efforts in furthering its mission to democratize finance with accessibility for all through crypto.

 

The achievement was outlined recently in a report by TechCabal, a pan-African publication that covers innovation and tech developments across Africa. Bitpowr provides a modular ecosystem of Web3 and blockchain infrastructure to aid enterprises in building out blockchain-powered solutions.

Asian clientele on the ascendancy

In a recent interview, Toby Oyetoke, the co-founder of Bitpowr, disclosed a noteworthy shift in customer demographics, with Asian clientele now surpassing their African counterparts in contributing to the company's $200 million transaction milestone. The Bitpowr co-founder believes that this signals a growing demand in the Asian market for accessible blockchain tools and infrastructure which are necessary for financial institutions seeking to launch and scale their products and services, relative to Web3.

 

Oyetoke shared insights into Bitpowr's financial performance, stating:

“Currently, we do up to $20 million per month in terms of traction volume processed, and that is from April 2022 till now. We now generate more revenue than we spend. We are cash flow positive.”

 

There have been signs that inter-regional trade between the African and Asian regions is growing where crypto-related payment gateways and solutions are concerned. At the end of last month, Klasha, an Africa-based cross-border payments company, partnered with Singapore-headquartered digital payments firm FOMO Pay with a view towards better enabling Asian merchants to trade with African businesses over crypto-enabled payment rails.

 

A recent Chainalysis report revealed Asia as the largest cryptocurrency market globally. Its crypto adoption index prominently featured Asian nations such as India, Thailand and Vietnam among the top grouping of nations where adoption of the digital asset innovation is concerned.

 

Bitpowr co-founder Amarachi Amaechi is equally enthused about Asian market growth opportunities. She stated:

 

“There is a good demand from Asia right now. We are seeing increasing representation in transaction volume which also translates to an increase in revenue for us.”  

 

Amaechi outlined that the firm intends to hire people from Asian countries in order to market the company’s service offering in those markets.

 

Focus on Southeast Asia

Looking ahead, Bitpowr is setting its sights on expanding further into the Asian market, particularly in Southeast Asia, while maintaining its operations in Africa. The company aims to establish its ledger and wallet infrastructure during this strategic expansion.

 

Bitpowr has also announced that it has achieved SOC 2 compliance, meaning that it follows strict information security policies and procedures. It has also initiated the implementation of the ISO 27001 audit process through its partnership with New York-headquartered compliance specialist Thoropass.

 

The company's expansion into the Asian market is anticipated to not only accelerate its own growth but also offer customers in the region access to innovative digital asset solutions, supporting them in achieving their financial goals.

Among the announced measures is a mutual 30-day visa-free travel arrangement, one of 24 deals signed to strengthen bilateral ties between China and Singapore.The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) disclosed in a statement that it had collaborated with the Digital Currency Institute of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) for this initiative. The program aims to facilitate the use of the digital version of the Chinese currency for tourist spending, enhancing convenience for travelers during their overseas trips. While specific details about the scheme were not disclosed, it represents a collaborative effort to promote cross-border transactions using the digital yuan.Internationalizing the digital yuanIn its reporting on the announcement, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) pointed to the views of Richard Turrin, an independent financial technology consultant and author of “Cashless: China’s Digital Currency Revolution.” Turrin sees the digital yuan collaboration as a promising opportunity for cross-border retail use. He suggests that starting with small transactions, such as those by tourists, could pave the way for broader applications in trade and other high-value scenarios.In an editorial back in November, the SCMP referred to the birth of the Petro-Yuan, speculating that the era of the Petro-Dollar is coming to an end. “In a global political economy long dominated by the petrodollar, this could be the beginning of a seismic shift,” the editorial stated. The internationalization of the e-CNY will likely be a key aspect of that overall monetary sea change.Over 5 years in developmentChina initiated digital yuan testing in 2019, and although an official launch timetable has not been confirmed, adoption has accelerated recently. Former PBOC governor Yi Gang reported that total e-CNY transactions reached 950 million yuan ($133 million) in June, with a cumulative value of 1.8 trillion yuan compared to 100 billion yuan in August 2022. This indicates a substantial increase in digital yuan transactions.The momentum extends beyond mainland China, with Beijing exploring CBDC usage internationally. The mBridge trial, completed last year, involved multiple countries using central bank digital currencies to settle trades, including Hong Kong, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.In June, authorities in China’s resort city of Sanya introduced e-CNY ATMs so that foreign visitors could buy the digital yuan and use it during their time in China. Another initiative aims to encourage further use of the digital currency within the Chinese autonomous territory of Hong Kong. In July, the Hong Kong arm of the Bank of China rolled out a digital yuan shopping festival in Hong Kong, allowing visitors to Hong Kong from mainland China to make purchases using the digital yuan.

These changes come in the wake of the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s (MAS) directives, which advise financial institutions, including cryptocurrency exchanges, to implement robust risk management procedures. The MAS has taken a stringent stance, shutting down certain digital payment token service providers to prevent them from facilitating lending and staking activities by retail customers.Starting from October 1, Bitget will require users who have not completed level 1 KYC verification to be restricted from creating new trading orders. This move aims to ensure that users comply with the newly updated guidelines and maintain the integrity of the exchange’s operations.Following industry peersKuCoin and OKX, two other prominent exchanges which, like Bitget, have their corporate headquarters in Seychelles and a strong presence in Asia, have also revamped their KYC policies. While KuCoin initially introduced KYC in 2018, the exchange has strengthened its identity verification procedures, requiring users to upload documents and complete face checks.Furthermore, in July, it announced a mandatory KYC requirement, in line with anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. While the mandatory KYC requirement is already in force, the other changes are set to take effect at the end of the month.OKX, on the other hand, has implemented stringent requirements, including the submission of a government-issued ID selfie for users to access all its services. The exchange recently set a deadline for service users to complete KYC.Bitget’s Chen highlighted that its decision to embrace KYC measures was driven by a commitment to serving the market responsibly. She acknowledged that while some users may have reservations about KYC, it is a necessary step to maintain the integrity of the exchange and prevent illicit activities. Speaking at the fringes of the firm’s EmpowerX Summit in Singapore, Chen said:“I’m pretty sure if the user is a financially healthy user, such as, like, if they’re not doing something illegitimate, such as money laundering, they should be pretty comfortable with the KYC process.”Tightening regulationThe tightening of regulations in Asia is not limited to Singapore alone. Japan has also taken steps to enhance anti-money laundering measures related to cryptocurrency transactions, responding to international calls for stricter oversight. Additionally, South Korea’s Financial Services Commission (FSC) has announced plans to require companies to disclose details about their cryptocurrency holdings, expected values, and related business models in their financial statements, aligning crypto accounting with conventional financial reporting.These regulatory developments signify a broader trend in the region, with cryptocurrency service providers proactively adapting to the changing landscape. As governments and regulatory authorities take steps to address the potential risks associated with cryptocurrencies, exchanges are prioritizing compliance to ensure their longevity and continued growth.

The decision to implement these measures stems from the current economic downturn and the need to manage costs effectively, Bitkub explained.Bitkub Capital recorded a net profit of 1.3 billion baht ($37.49 million) in 2022, marking the second consecutive year of profitability for the company. However, net profit declined by 39% compared to the previous year, falling from 2.1 billion baht in 2021. Expenses also surged from 117 million baht in 2021 to 394 million baht in 2022.Bitkub Capital Group encompasses various entities in addition to the crypto exchange, including Bitkub Ventures (the venture capital arm), Bitkub Labs (also known as Bitkub Academy, the education arm), Bitkub Blockchain Technology (a consulting company focused on blockchain), and Bitkub Infinity (a portfolio management service provider).Bitkub Online, the crypto exchange unit, reported a profit of 341 million baht for the financial year ending on December 31, 2022, representing an 86% decline compared to the previous year. Total revenues for 2022 amounted to 2.8 billion baht, which marked a significant decrease of 48% compared to its peak performance in 2021 when it generated 5.5 billion baht in revenue.In a separate development, Asphere International, a game publisher listed on the Bangkok Stock Exchange, recently acquired a 9.22% stake in Bitkub Online for 600 million baht, valuing the startup at 6.5 billion baht.Broader regional trendThe downsizing at Bitkub reflects a broader trend among technology companies in the region. In June, aCommerce, a local e-commerce enabler, laid off at least 20 employees citing similar economic challenges. The same month, Grab, the Singapore-based ride-hailing and food delivery giant, announced a significant round of layoffs, with 1,000 employees, including the Thailand team, being let go.Bitkub’s decision to adjust its workforce and streamline employee benefits is a response to the economic headwinds it faces. It’s not the company’s first setback. Last year, Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) penalized the firm’s CTO, Samret Wajanasathain, on the basis of insider trading.The cyclical nature of the digital asset exchange business means that Bitkub can seek to weather this storm and benefit from the upside once market conditions inevitably become more favorable in the not too distant future.
