Leading global crypto exchange platform OKX has officially launched OKX TR, a specialized crypto exchange tailored to meet the needs of users in Turkey.

This unveiling, announced on Feb. 27, marks a significant stride in the company’s efforts to offer Turkish users greater access to cryptocurrency trading and decentralized finance (DeFi).

OKX Wallet integration

OKX TR has integrated OKX's Web3 wallet, providing Turkish users with access to a wide array of features. The wallet offers a user-friendly portal for trading non-fungible tokens (NFTs), utilizing decentralized applications (dApps). Noteworthy features of the OKX Wallet include multi-party computation (MPC) technology and account abstraction (AA), enhancing accessibility for users with varying levels of technical expertise.

OKX TR introduces localized features designed to cater specifically to Turkish users, including direct deposits and withdrawals in Turkish Lira, facilitated through strategic partnerships with banking institutions such as Fibabanka, VakıfBank, Ziraat Bankası, İş Bankası, Şekerbank and Türkiye Finans. The platform offers a range of major cryptocurrency pairs for trading, including USDT/TRY, BTC/TRY and ETH/TRY.

Moreover, OKX TR prioritizes user experience by providing round-the-clock customer support in both Turkish and English, attempting to provide prompt assistance and comprehensive guidance whenever needed.

Crypto adoption backdrop

The platform’s arrival should contribute further towards the burgeoning crypto ecosystem in Turkey, a market boasting a close to 50% adoption rate for cryptocurrencies. A report by OKX rival platform KuCoin back in August of last year found that there had been a significant increase in crypto users in Turkey over the course of the previous 18 months.

It’s believed that crypto adoption in Turkey is being driven partly by its role as a financial lifeline amid economic challenges. The country’s sovereign currency, the lira, has suffered from runaway inflation in recent years.

On social media OKX Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Haider Rafique wrote that the new service offers “lightning fast signup and funding,” alongside the “lowest fees in the market.”

Mehmet Çamır, Chairman of OKX TR, outlined that the company had first announced expansion into Turkey in May 2023. Çamır set out the company’s intentions within the Turkish market, stating:

"The launch of OKX TR represents more than just an expansion; it signifies our pledge to equip users with a transparent, compliant and user-friendly gateway to the world of blockchain. . . . We can unlock the vast potential of the Turkish crypto community and pave the way towards a future where finance is more inclusive and transparent.”

Turkey is in the process of introducing a raft of crypto regulations, primarily with the intention of enabling it to be removed from the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) “grey list.” In December, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed blockchain and cryptocurrency expert Fatma Ozkul to the Turkish central bank’s rate-setting committee.

Those moves demonstrate some positive progress from the point of Erdogan’s statement in 2021 when he declared “a war on crypto.”

$9M funding round to enhance liquidity at Woo X

WOO X, a Taipei-based cryptocurrency exchange, has successfully raised $9 million in its latest funding round, with notable investors including crypto market maker Wintermute. Jack Tan, co-founder of WOO, emphasized the significance of this funding in aligning the interests of liquidity providers rather than as a capital-raising exercise. On social media the company wrote that it “welcomes an elite group of liquidity providers to our ecosystem - as our commitment to building the best environment for traders remains steadfast.”Photo by micheile henderson on UnsplashDesignated market makersThe funding comes from designated market makers (DMMs), featuring participants like Selini Capital, Time Research, Pulsar, Efficient Frontier, Singapore’s Amber Group, AlphaLab Capital, Presto Labs and Riverside Hedge. This infusion of capital is expected to enhance liquidity on WOO X, starting with the BTC and ETH perpetual futures markets and later expanding into altcoin perpetual futures and all spot markets. WOO X plans to roll out a designated market maker (DMM) program for its spot markets in the first quarter of the current year. These strategic moves are expected to contribute to achieving a 100% custody ratio by the second quarter of 2024. Business model pivotWOO X underwent a strategic shift in its business model during the third quarter of the previous year. It transitioned to partner with multiple liquidity providers for both spot and perpetual futures markets, moving away from reliance on a single provider, Kronos Research. The decision to diversify followed a security incident in November 2023, where Kronos suffered a hack leading to an estimated loss of $25 million. As a response, WOO X took proactive measures to restructure its operations. As part of that plan to address liquidity, last month WOO X established a significant partnership with Wintermute, the leading algorithmic trading company and liquidity provider with a trading volume of approximately $3.6 trillion. This partnership positions Wintermute as the primary liquidity provider for WOO X, further strengthening the exchange's market presence. News of this development in December led to a marked increase in the unit price of the platform’s WOO token. Over the course of the last two weeks of December, the WOO token price increased from $0.2385 to $0.4718, representing a 98% increase. Contributing to its recent surge is the partnership announcement with Arbitrum by WooFi exchange, a development that attracted attention from potential investors. The exchange implemented various initiatives to fortify its position, including updates to its fee structure, technology infrastructure enhancements to accommodate multiple designated market makers simultaneously, the introduction of a maker rebate in USDT and the launch of the DMM rewards pool to further incentivize liquidity provision on WOO X. Global expansionThe newly secured funds are earmarked for global market expansion and obtaining regulatory licenses, aligning with WOO's vision for sustainable growth. In 2021, Woo Network successfully closed a $30 million Series A funding round. Subsequently, in October of the previous year, the company repurchased its shares and tokens from the bankruptcy estate of Three Arrows Capital, a participant in the Series A round.

China Launches National Blockchain Center to Develop Talent

China Launches National Blockchain Center to Develop TalentHaving initially been announced in February, China’s National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center was formally launched on Wednesday. The center is based in China’s capital city of Beijing, and plans to collaborate with existing crypto and blockchain businesses, think tanks that concern themselves with blockchain and digital assets, and local universities in an effort to further advance blockchain technology within China’s borders.Photo by Hanson Lu on UnsplashEnterprise blockchain developmentEncompassed within the National Blockchain Technology Innovation Center lies the Beijing Academy of Blockchain and Edge Computing. The academy’s leading achievement to date has been its development of the ChainMaker blockchain. The state-sponsored blockchain incorporates clusters of high performance servers of 1,000 units or more, and it claims to achieve a throughput of 240 million transactions per second. The blockchain is being geared towards enterprise use, and the sharing of information between businesses. The ChainMaker project team has also developed an immutable storage mechanism called “Hong”. It’s understood that the team plans to open-source that technology in due course. The storage system is being used by around 80 government departments in Beijing to collect and store data.ChainMaker is collaborating with fifty corporations, with most of them being state-owned entities.Linking up separate networksIn these efforts to advance China’s blockchain sector, the Center is being backed by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology. One of its key objectives is to ensure that the research center enables a comprehensive, nation-wide network to link together disparate blockchain systems, including those already built, within China. Furthermore, the Chinese authorities want the Center to support existing industries, serving them by bringing blockchain technology to their operations, and in that way advancing businesses with that added competitive edge.Zheng Zhiming, a leading academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences said that existing blockchain projects are isolated from each other. Zhiming believes that this is holding them back, impeding their growth. This latest approach through the National Blockchain Technology Center is geared to address that shortcoming. It’s interesting to note that while the Chinese authorities have taken a very hard line in relation to cryptocurrencies, they are very much trying to advance their blockchain sector. Likewise, they are pulling out the stops for China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) project, the digital yuan or e-CNY.It emerged last week that the Bank of China has partnered with French international banking group BNP Paribas, in an effort to promote further use of the digital yuan among the bank’s corporate clients.A dual strategyMeanwhile in China’s autonomous territory of Hong Kong, the city has been given an implicit mandate from the Chinese central government to open its doors to cryptocurrency-related businesses. Cleverly, the Chinese are covering both eventualities. While they don’t want citizens within mainland China to have access to decentralized cryptocurrencies and dApps, they still don’t want to miss out on any upside that the technology and its innovation may bring. On that basis, Hong Kong has been given the space and freedom to compete for crypto business on a global basis, competing in that respect with other emerging centers such as Singapore and Dubai.
