Blockchain game performance is key to Wemade’s future success

Web3 & Enterprise·February 28, 2024, 5:40 AM

South Korea’s securities and investment banking house, Shinhan Securities, has maintained the investment rating for Korean game company Wemade as “hold,” according to local financial media outlet Etoday. Shinhan Securities cited uncertainties in the crypto market outlook and the firm’s need to improve business performance as the ground for its latest investment rating. The performance of the firm’s blockchain games is a significant factor in Wemade’s future success as the overall excitement surrounding mobile massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) cools down.

Shinhan Securities’ head analyst Kang Seok-oh wrote in his analysis report that for Q4 2023, the firm recorded an operation loss of approximately $53 million (KRW 70.8 billion) and a consensus deficit close to $39.4 million (KRW 52.6 billion). Sales for the game company declined during the same period because the revenue from license sales, which was included in the Q3 2023 revenue, was not counted in the Q4 2023 figures, according to the report.

New games to enter the Chinese market

Wemade is set to roll out more new games relative to last year, with plans to enter the Chinese market with “Mir4” and “MirM,” both of which are based on blockchain technology. Its MMORPG “Night Crows,” which ranked 3rd in mobile game sales last year, is also scheduled for a global launch on March 12. “The Legend of Mir”, the firm’s another new game in the pipeline, will be released in the second half of this year.

Kang said the key question is how much influence the crypto market boom will have on the future performance of the firm’s blockchain games. Furthermore, with the firm’s local sales slowing down following the cease of its referral marketing strategy, keeping its existing services profitable would be another important point, he said.

“Although Wemade keeps making its efforts to enter the Chinese market by signing contracts and obtaining the license permit Version Number from the Chinese government, it seems unlikely that Korean games will enjoy the high popularity they once had before China’s ban on Korean culture. Everything would have to turn out in the game company’s favor to improve its business performance,” Kang said.

India Looks to Boost CBDC With 1 Million Users in 3 Months

India Looks to Boost CBDC With 1 Million Users in 3 MonthsThe project team responsible for India’s retail central bank digital currency (CBDC) is aiming to increase its user base to one million users, while also prioritizing the challenge of creating an offline version.©Pexels/Sohel PatelAlthough the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s central bank, publicly stated in March that they were aiming for 500,000 users by July, they are privately looking to double that amount. According to sources familiar with the matter cited by CoinDesk, the architects behind the centralized digital currency are confident that India’s population, being the world’s largest, will enable them to reach one million users easily. Tentatively the project team is aiming to achieve this within three months.Retail and Wholesale CBDCsThe RBI is currently conducting both retail and wholesale CBDC pilot programs. The retail CBDC pilot is active in at least 15 cities, with more than 13 banks participating. The digital rupee pilot began on December 1, 2022, and has seen over 100,000 customers participate in the four months since.India’s digital rupee gained significant attention at a recent meeting of the Group of 20 (G-20), which was hosted by India in Bengaluru, according to RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. The central bank received positive feedback, with praise received for the design of the CBDC.Multiple challengesThe RBI initiated a Hackathon in 2023 to find solutions to some of the challenges around retail CBDC, including improving scalability, increasing transactions per second, and enabling offline transactions. However, achieving all three technical objectives at once is nearly impossible at present. Experts believe that it is only possible to achieve two out of the three objectives, but the hope is that technological innovation will address this in the future.Offline transactionsFacilitating offline transactions is crucial to improve financial inclusion in emerging economies such as India. The RBI is testing various methods to enable offline transactions, including wearables, debit and credit cards, Bluetooth technology, and smartphones. The central bank is also looking to address the risk of double-spending.More than 50 proposals were submitted to the RBI to solve the problem of offline transactions. The RBI has also been interacting with private companies to consider solutions to improving scalability, even though no partnership has been initiated with any prominent blockchain-related entities.News of India’s ambitious CBDC project fast-tracking has led some to speculate as to what technology lies behind it. Some have suggested Ripple as a possible partner but the suggestion is entirely speculative at this point. The RBI has not announced a timeline for rolling out a full-scale retail CBDC but has indicated previously that it was aiming for the end of the year. The development of a digital rupee has the potential to transform India’s economy by providing greater financial inclusion to its population, which is why the RBI is taking the time to ensure that the CBDC is as robust as possible.

World Mobile & Protelindo team up to launch drone-based network

UK-headquartered decentralized mobile network project World Mobile has teamed up with PT Professional Telekomunikasi Indonesia, better known as Protelindo, to launch a blockchain-based 5G mobile network. Founded in 2003, Protelindo is an Indonesian digital infrastructure firm that specializes in fiber optic networks and telecommunications towers. It owns and operates a large network of these towers in Indonesia, leasing them out to various mobile service operators.  The two firms acquired Combined Space Technologies (CST) earlier this year as a joint venture. CST had been originally founded in Cambridge in the UK, backed by Deutsche Telekom to the tune of $70 million. Successful demos of its proprietary technology had been completed in conjunction with British Telecom (BT) and Deutsche Telekom before World Mobile and Protelindo decided to purchase the company.Photo by Alessio Soggetti on UnsplashWorld Mobile StratosphericIn a press release published on Aug. 8, World Mobile outlined that through CST, the two companies have launched World Mobile Stratospheric.  World Mobile asserts that the establishment of this stratospheric connectivity platform is “unprecedented.” The project implicates the use of fixed-wing drone aircraft, which it proposes to use to host 500,000 simultaneous 5G handset connections while flying at altitudes of up to 20,000 meters. World Mobile Group Chief Business Officer (CBO), Charles Barnett, told Cointelegraph that each drone can provide wireless network coverage over an area of 15,000 square kilometers. Each aircraft will host 450 individually steerable beams in order to deliver the service within a defined geographical area. Low latencyBarnett outlined that the technology can achieve just six milliseconds of total latency with the service having the capability of providing 5G service up to 18 times cheaper per gigabyte by comparison with other similar technologies. It’s thought that the service will compete with space/satellite-based telecoms systems such as Elon Musk’s Starlink. While Starlink has brought internet to corners of the globe that were otherwise underserved, it has been criticized in terms of its interference with astronomy, increased space debris and the potential for atmospheric pollution. Additionally, the low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite-based service has much higher overheads. In comparison with World Mobile Stratopheric’s six millisecond latency, Starlink is much higher at 47 milliseconds. The system delivers directly to the consumer’s device, whereas Starlink is delivered to a satellite dish with significant cost implications for the user. Stratomast, the hydrogen-powered drone aircraft, can stay up for between six and nine days and produces zero emissions. While Starlink and World Mobile Stratospheric may compete, Barnett believes that Starlink is the better choice when delivering service to remote areas that lack any cellular connectivity at all, whereas Stratospheric is the best option in areas with a higher density of mobile users. Micky Watkins, CEO of World Mobile, said that the partnership proves how blockchain can unlock new models for global connectivity. He added:“It aligns infrastructure deployment with community participation and makes decentralized telecom not just possible, but scalable.” Watkins believes that by combining advanced aerospace technology with token-driven economics, the project is building a network that connects more people, faster, in an economically efficient and environmentally sound manner.
