OKX adds Uniswap in bid to eliminate gas fees

Web3 & Enterprise·March 02, 2024, 2:58 AM

Leading crypto exchange OKX has announced the seamless integration of Uniswap Labs' application programming interface (API) into its decentralized exchange (DEX). The objective of the Uniswap addition is to usher in an era of gas-free trading through its innovative feature called "Snap” for OKX service users.

Snap trading mode

The company made the announcement by way of a PR Newswire press release on Feb. 29. OKX asserts that Uniswap is one of the most trusted names in DeFi. As part of the integration, the Snap trading mode will be included as a feature on OKX DEX, with the objective of aggregating Uniswap’s liquidity.

The feature operates directly on the OKX DEX interface by way of the UniswapX protocol. UniswapX is an immutable smart contract built with the intention to be fully permissionless. The contract cannot be modified or paused by anyone, including Uniswap Labs.

Liquidity providers pay the fee

In explaining away the technology, Jason Lau, the chief innovation officer at OKX told Cointelegraph the mechanics behind the no-fee swaps. Lau unveiled a novel model wherein liquidity providers absorb transaction fees on behalf of users.

He asserted that this approach not only enhances convenience but also facilitates cost savings for traders. Lau elaborated further, stating:

“By agreeing to a price and signing a transaction off-chain, then settling the transaction on-chain, users end up paying no gas fees because the liquidity providers will pay the fee on the user’s behalf.”

Going beyond trading fee reduction

Anticipating a positive response from DeFi enthusiasts, Lau highlighted additional features that go beyond transaction fee savings. These include the elimination of slippages, maximum extractable value (MEV) bot attacks and transaction failures, addressing prevalent concerns within the DeFi space.

In tandem with the gas-free trading initiative, OKX announced a seamless integration for its wallet users within the Uniswap interface, courtesy of the Multi-Injected Provider Discovery upgrade on Ethereum, based on Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)-6963.

This enhancement extends to all browser extension wallets, enabling OKX wallet users to seamlessly connect with Uniswap, facilitating activities such as cryptocurrency swapping, NFT trading, liquidity pool participation and decentralized application (dApp) development.

Positioning this integration as a pivotal addition to their ecosystem, Lau reiterated OKX's commitment to broadening user access to diverse on-chain use cases. He expressed enthusiasm for ongoing development initiatives and urged users to actively contribute feedback for further enhancements.

The crypto exchange platform achieved further technical progress recently, with the addition of support for atomicals, runes, doginals and stamps to its Web3 wallet. Providing further detail on these additions last month, the company said that they were part of a "first-to-market" initiative relative to Bitcoin NFTs.

Alongside technical advancements like these, earlier this week it emerged that the company was further advancing its market expansion strategy, through the launch of OKX TR, its Turkish platform.

With OKX pioneering gas-free trading and bolstering user accessibility to decentralized finance, the convergence of traditional finance and blockchain technology accelerates, indicating an ongoing transformative shift in the crypto space.

UAE crypto miner establishes $150M crypto treasury

Crypto infrastructure, mining and investment firm Phoenix Group, a company based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and publicly listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX), has established a $150 million crypto treasury.Photo by Jievani Weerasinghe on UnsplashFirst ADX-listed firm to establish crypto treasuryThe development emerged as the company released its results for Q2 2025. Phoenix Group explained in a press release that its activities in Q2 led to it becoming the first ADX-listed company to establish a strategic crypto treasury with Bitcoin (BTC) and Solana (SOL) holdings valued at $150 million. Phoenix asserted that unlike its competitors which are burdened by debt, it has a healthy balance sheet, with debt of just $16 million. This has enabled it to pursue the establishment of a strategic crypto reserve. The company is also expanding into AI-related activities, with plans to repurpose part of its U.S. infrastructure. That adjustment will allow the firm to establish a multi-use compute facility, enabling it to build out its AI vertical. Phoenix Group Co-Founder and CEO Munaf Ali said that Phoenix is working towards building out one gigawatt of hybrid infrastructure by 2027. Ali also commented on the pursuit of a crypto treasury, stating:“Holding Bitcoin and other strategic digital assets isn’t just about exposure. It’s about alignment. We believe in the long-term value these networks represent, and our treasury strategy reflects that belief.”DWF Ventures, the ventures arm of crypto market maker DWF Labs that relocated its headquarters from Singapore to Abu Dhabi earlier this year, released a report in June revealing that publicly-listed companies that have adopted a crypto treasury strategy have amassed holdings of $76 billion in crypto. Phoenix Group has disclosed that to date, it has accumulated 514 Bitcoin and over 630,000 Solana with a view towards holding these digital assets in the long term. Earlier this year, American digital asset investment firm Sarson Funds outlined that the UAE is playing a significant role in advancing Bitcoin adoption at a corporate level in the context of the ongoing trend towards the pursuit of a Bitcoin corporate treasury strategy. Miners accumulatingPhoenix Group isn’t the only company involved in crypto mining to establish a crypto corporate treasury recently. In June, American miner BitMine Immersion Technologies disclosed that it was raising $18 million through a public share offering to buy Bitcoin. Since then, it has been accumulating Ether (ETH). As of July 24, the firm held over 300,000 ETH, with plans to raise $4.5 billion to fuel further ETH purchases. MARA Holdings, a publicly-listed American Bitcoin miner, has also confirmed that its treasury now extends beyond Bitcoin that it mined itself. Phoenix Group confirmed that it mined 336 BTC in Q2, with 689 BTC mined over the course of H1 2025. Founded in 2017, the firm debuted on the ADX in December 2023 with its stock immediately surging by 50% from its initial public offering (IPO) launch price. The firm’s share price has also performed well in 2025, surging 72% from April to June.

Kyobo Life Insurance joins Circle’s Arc testnet amid growing crypto interest in Korea

Kyobo Life Insurance, one of South Korea’s largest life insurers, has become a participant in the recently launched public testnet for Circle Internet Group’s Arc. This new open layer-1 blockchain network aims to serve a broad range of use cases, including lending, capital markets, foreign exchange (FX), and global payments.Photo by Kindel Media on PexelsNotable global participants in the Arc networkAccording to a press release from Circle, published on Oct. 28, multiple prominent banks and asset managers are also engaging with the Arc network. Kyobo Life stands as the only South Korean entity involved in the initiative. Other notable global participants include BlackRock, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, SBI Holdings, and Standard Chartered. This move comes on the heels of Kyobo Life’s earlier participation in a stablecoin project spearheaded by the Seoul-based Open Blockchain & Decentralized Identifier (DID) Association. This highlights the insurer’s growing interest in exploring business opportunities within the digital assets space. Korean crypto exchanges step up oversightAs cryptocurrencies gain increasing recognition as a new asset class, South Korean exchanges have become more vigilant in monitoring user activities, partly to curb potential criminal behavior. A report by Money Today revealed that over the past six years, local trading platforms have halted a total of 82.9 billion won ($58.1 billion) in crypto withdrawals. Among these, Bithumb accounted for the largest share, suspending withdrawals totaling 50.5 billion won ($35.4 million) from 2020 to September 2025. Upbit suspended 25.6 billion won ($18 billion) in the same period, while other exchanges like Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax reported more modest suspensions. These actions are largely in response to the Virtual Asset User Protection Act, which came into effect in July 2024. The Act aims to enhance oversight and safeguard consumers, reflecting the government’s intent to regulate the sector more tightly. Surge in Korea-Cambodia stablecoin tradingParallel to these regulatory developments, a dramatic surge in stablecoin trading volume has been observed between South Korea and Cambodia. According to data from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) reported by the Seoul Shinmun, transactions between five major South Korean exchanges and Cambodia’s Huione Guarantee skyrocketed to 12.8 billion won ($8.98 million) in 2024, marking a staggering 1,400-fold increase compared to just 9.22 million won ($6,500) in 2023. This rise in activity coincides with recently uncovered criminal cases originating from Cambodia and has raised concerns about illicit practices within the crypto market. In response to these concerns, crypto exchanges are bolstering their efforts to cooperate with law enforcement. Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume, was recently honored with a commendation by the South Korean Minister of the Interior and Safety for its contributions to enhancing cybercrime investigations and administrative capabilities. This accolade comes amid Binance’s increasing presence in South Korea. Binance, which had acquired Gopax ahead of regulatory approval, has now received clearance from local financial authorities to become the Korean trading platform’s largest shareholder. Public sentiment on Binance’s acquisition of GopaxA recent survey conducted by CoinNess and the community-voting app Cratos, which polled 2,000 South Koreans, provided insights into the public’s perception of Binance’s acquisition of Gopax. Among respondents, 38.8% indicated that their decision to use the rebranded platform would depend on the benefits it offered compared to other exchanges, while 23.6% said they were already planning to use it. Together, these figures suggest that 62.4% of participants are open to the platform, although some are conditioned on its advantages. However, 27.5% rejected the platform entirely, and 10.2% stated they do not use local exchanges at all. As South Korea deepens its role in the global digital asset ecosystem, its growing participation in initiatives like Circle’s Arc network reflects an ambition to align with international finance trends. At the same time, stricter oversight and cross-border monitoring signal a firm commitment to transparency. The balance it strikes between innovation and regulation will define its path in the global crypto arena.

Zipmex proposes creditor repayments of 3 cents on the dollar

Zipmex proposes creditor repayments of 3 cents on the dollarBeleaguered Singaporean crypto exchange Zipmex has unveiled a restructuring proposal aimed at repaying creditors. According to a report published by Bloomberg on Wednesday, the initial offer stands at 3.35 cents for every dollar of the creditors’ claims.Photo by Alexander Grey on UnsplashRestructuring challengesThis restructuring proposal unfolds against the backdrop of a challenging period for Zipmex, triggered by the aftermath of last year’s crypto price downturn. The crypto exchange, which operates in Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and Singapore, is currently undergoing a court-supervised restructuring process based in Singapore. In its efforts to restructure the business, Zipmex is grappling with a debt of $97.1 million. That total debt level is contingent upon the eventual recovery of assets. Bloomberg cited sources familiar with the matter, suggesting that depending on the success of these recovery efforts, the repayment figure could potentially surge to 29.35 cents per dollar.Creditor dissatisfactionHowever, not all major creditors are on board with Zipmex’s proposed plan. Expressing reservations, they are pushing for an independent review to scrutinize recent changes in the company’s assets and liabilities, as outlined in an Oct. 4 court document. This external examination is deemed crucial to ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the restructuring process. In response to these developments, Marcus Lim, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Zipmex, refrained from providing detailed comments due to the confidentiality of the ongoing arrangement. While acknowledging inaccuracies in information sourced from external outlets, he chose not to elaborate on them further.Investor deal failureA previous attempt to sell Zipmex to V Ventures, a subsidiary of Thoresen Thai Agencies, fell through. To add to the struggling company’s woes, it emerged earlier this week that Thailand’s securities regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently instructed Zipmex to halt operations in the country due to insufficient net capital. The company had been fined 11 million baht ($315,000) by the SEC earlier this year. The SEC cited the co-mingling of corporate and customer funds as one regulatory breach. Furthermore, the Thai regulator claimed that between May and July 2022, Zipmex “did not have in place a system to effectively prevent conflicts of interest in such matters and the business operation does not have an adequate risk control system.”In response to this recent regulatory directive, Zipmex Limited issued a statement to its customers, expressing its commitment to ensuring proper and compliant business operations in line with the criteria set by the Thai SEC. Consequently, the temporary suspension of digital asset trading and deposit of all types was deemed necessary. The intricacies of Zipmex’s financial restructuring will be closely watched by market observers, especially considering the volatility in the crypto market and the regulatory challenges faced by the company in multiple jurisdictions. The success of the proposed repayment plan, contingent upon asset recovery, remains uncertain, leaving creditors and industry stakeholders on edge.As Zipmex grapples with these multifaceted challenges, its future trajectory hinges on navigating both the demands of the bankruptcy process alongside regulatory requirements.
