Enhancing platform app features

This new feature empowers users to seamlessly swap their tokens and access DeFi services through the platform’s Web3 wallet, according to a press release the company published concerning the development earlier this week. Bitget outlined that the primary goal of the integration is to offer users diverse options for trading their crypto assets within the exchange ecosystem.

Bitget Managing Director Gracy Chen set out the significance of the recently ushered in changes. Chen stated:

“Integrating Web3 services into our CEX platform marks a significant milestone for Bitget. By offering users the freedom to access various DeFi services alongside the convenience and security of our CeFi platform, we are empowering them with a unique experience. Bitget aims to provide a comprehensive ecosystem that caters to the evolving needs of our users, all while maintaining the highest standards of security and reliability.”

Service offering expansion

Furthermore, the app is set to expand its services, gradually incorporating a non-custody wallet, an NFT marketplace and decentralized applications (dApps), Chen confirmed. Bitget users can now experience enhanced flexibility in their trading activities, as the exchange plans to make most listed currencies available in the Web3 wallet for DeFi trading. The swap feature, a core element of this integration, aggregates liquidity from 10 decentralized exchanges (DEXs), including popular platforms like Uniswap, PancakeSwap and Curve Finance. Chen confirmed further details to Cointelegraph, stating:

“At the core of the recent integration is our Web3 Wallet, which facilitates the secure storage, management, and control of their digital assets. Alongside the wallet, we’ve launched a Swap service, which is an advanced DeFi aggregator.”

The firm acquired the BitKeep crypto wallet earlier this year, with the product subsequently having been officially rebranded to the Bitget Wallet in August. The move has worked out well for the firm, with it confirming at the end of July that it had achieved 20 million users as a consequence. The more recent integration not only facilitates asset management services but also provides native storage solutions for users.

$100 million fund

This initiative aligns with Bitget’s ongoing efforts to establish a strong foothold in the crypto space. The exchange has consistently pursued expansion, launching multimillion-dollar funds to support the growth of the Web3 ecosystem. At an event in Singapore recently, Bitget introduced a $100 million fund dedicated to supporting venture firms and investing in the next generation of Web3 projects.

Earlier this week, the company committed a $10 million fund towards the objective of nurturing high-potential crypto startup projects in India.

Historic ruling sees Dubai court validate crypto as salary payment

The Dubai Court of First Instance in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has notched up another milestone relative to the continuing rollout of the use of and legal status of cryptocurrency by recognizing crypto as a legitimate means of payment where salaries are concerned. The groundbreaking decision, which was revealed in the court via case number 1739 of 2024, gives confirmed legal recognition to the validity of crypto as a means of payment for salaries, which may be stipulated in an employment contract.Photo by David Rodrigo on UnsplashRuling reflecting a progressive approach to cryptoThe outcome hit the radar of a number of crypto-centric UAE-based lawyers, with Web3 lawyer Irina Heaver, a partner at NeosLegal, pointing out that the decision marks a shift from previous relevant case law in the UAE in 2023 when a similar set of circumstances led to crypto not being recognized for the purposes of salary payment. Commenting on the ruling of that previous case, she stated: “This decision reflected a traditional viewpoint, emphasizing the need for concrete evidence when dealing with unconventional payment forms.” Ecowatt (EWT) tokensIn this latest case, the circumstances revolved around a dispute whereby an employee claimed for unpaid salary, termination compensation and further benefits. The employee’s contract of employment outlined a payment in both fiat currency, alongside 5,250 Ecowatt (EWT) tokens.  Ecowatt is a renewable energy blockchain project which claims to serve a purpose in reducing carbon impact on a global basis through the tokenization of green energy. It was the failure of the employer to pay out the tokenized portion of the employee’s salary that led to the dispute and the subsequent lawsuit. The court ultimately sided with the employee, agreeing that the employer must fulfill its contractual obligation and pay out the remainder of the employee’s salary and benefits in Ecowatt tokens. The judgement stated: “As the respondent did not provide evidence of payment in EcoWatt tokens, the court orders the respondent to pay the claimant the value of her wages in EcoWatt tokens.” In weighing up this latest adjudication, Heaver concludes that the move is congruent with the progressive approach that is being taken to digital assets within the UAE. “This decision reflects a broader acceptance of cryptocurrency in employment contracts and highlights the court’s recognition of the evolving nature of financial transactions within the Web3 economy,” she stated. Mahmoud Abuwasel, partner at Wasel & Wasel, an international firm with a presence in Abu Dhabi, also noted the relevance of the ruling, posting on the matter on legal update database, Lexology.  Greater legal clarityLittle by little, greater clarity is emerging in jurisdictions worldwide with regard to the status of cryptocurrency and digital assets within the context of international legal systems. In 2023, a Chinese court recognized virtual assets as legal property, affirming the legal status of virtual assets as protected property under Chinese law.Earlier in 2023, the courts in the Chinese autonomous territory of Hong Kong determined cryptocurrency to be property “capable of being held in trust.” Not all decisions have been positive however, with a Singaporean court determining in April 2023 that crypto is not money, albeit that the judge did acknowledge that the matter would require a more detailed examination of evidence in another court.

The development comes amid other significant shifts in Dream11’s leadership.Additionally, Rario is undergoing a broader restructuring effort that includes the elimination of various roles, according to sources who were cited by TechCrunch as being familiar with the matter. This recent upheaval coincides with reports of Dream11’s parent company, Dream Sports, taking measures to reduce operational costs. TechCrunch noted that Dream Sports is actively renegotiating several licensing agreements previously inked by Rario as part of cost-cutting measures.High profile investorsRario boasts a roster of high-profile investors, including global investment company Alpha Wave Global and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar. In April 2022, the cricket NFT platform made waves by securing $120 million in a Series A funding round, asserting its dominance in the cricket NFT rights arena with over 900 cricketers on board at that time. It’s not clear what valuation the firm had at the time of the Series A funding round but in a prior round, Rario had been valued at $250 million.Founded in 2021, Rario set out with a mission to create digital cricket collectibles and foster an online community for passionate fans. By April 2021, the company had successfully sold 50,000 NFTs to sports enthusiasts spanning 20 countries.Cricket world partnershipsCricket is the second largest sport in the world with in excess of 1.5 billion fans worldwide. Those changes saw Polygon Labs’ Indian Co-Founder Sandeep Naiwal transition to the role of Executive Chairman.Rario’s ongoing evolution reflects the dynamic nature of the NFT space, where startups must adapt to changing investor interests and market conditions. With its investors taking the reins, Rario faces a pivotal juncture in its journey to redefine how cricket fans engage with the sport through the exciting world of NFTs.
