HSBC and Ant Group advance blockchain-based tokenized deposit system

The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), the largest bank in Hong Kong, and Ant Group, China’s leading financial conglomerate, have successfully conducted tests in a sandbox environment facilitated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to explore the potential of tokenized deposits.

Issue, transfer and redemption of tokenized deposits

According to Cointelegraph, the primary objective of this collaborative effort was to assess a system for issuing, transferring and redeeming tokenized deposits. The trial aimed to gauge the capacity of tokenized deposits to provide for greater efficiency, allowing for real-time treasury fund transfers for corporate accounts within the HSBC network to transpire seamlessly at any hour, 24/7.

HSBC expressed its excitement regarding the results, stating that it will open avenues for future research on how blockchain technology and tokenization can drive efficiencies and innovations in corporate treasury management.

The test harnessed a blockchain platform developed by Ant Group, leveraging the support of Ant Group’s banking partners. These partners played a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency of treasury fund transfers by reducing turnaround times, increasing cost efficiency and improving overall visibility.

Vincent Lau, Global Head of Emerging Payments and Global Payments Solutions at HSBC, emphasized the bank’s keen interest in integrating tokenized deposits and other financial innovations into its future strategy. This approach is designed to streamline and optimize treasury management services for its clients.

 

Crypto and blockchain project involvement

HSBC has maintained a proactive stance in exploring the potential of blockchain technology. The bank has participated in numerous initiatives related to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), notably Project mBridge, a multi-CBDC platform developed by SWIFT. This initiative supports real-time, peer-to-peer, cross-border payments and foreign exchange transactions using CBDCs.

It emerged earlier this year that HSBC was collaborating with the HKMA on its e-HKD CBDC pilot program. Part of that project implicated the use of tokenization relative to real world assets (RWAs), an area that the real-time gross settlement platform Ripple was providing expertise on.

In June, HSBC took a significant step by launching local cryptocurrency services in Hong Kong, which included support for trading Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed on Hong Kong’s stock exchange. The supported products encompass the CSOP Bitcoin Futures ETF, CSOP Ethereum Futures ETF and Samsung Bitcoin Futures Active ETF.

In the same month, the HKMA encouraged HSBC alongside Standard Chartered to provide banking service support to fledgling crypto businesses in Hong Kong, having identified an issue with the extension of banking services to the sector within the Chinese autonomous territory. Meanwhile, Ant Group has been central to the progression of blockchain technology within China.

HSBC’s expansion into crypto-related services aligns with the growing interest in digital assets, occurring in the aftermath of the launch of retail crypto trading in Hong Kong on June 1.

DLD partners with regulator in Dubai to integrate tokenized property

The Dubai Land Department (DLD), a government agency responsible for the registration of real estate in Dubai and the promotion of real estate investments, has signed an agreement with the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), a local regulator, to better integrate tokenized real estate within existing systems. In a statement published on the DLD website on April 6, the government agency set out further details on the collaboration. The purpose of the agreement is to better accommodate fractional ownership of Dubai real estate through tokenization. Photo by Precondo CA on UnsplashLinking fractional ownership to DLD registryTo that end, a governance system will be put in place in order to link the DLD’s land and property registry with tokenized, fractional ownership of property. The parties believe that this approach will lead to greater operational efficiency for stakeholders such as property management firms. Furthermore, greater accommodation of tokenized ownership will lead to enhanced liquidity within the Dubai real estate market.  As a consequence of this improved liquidity and facilitating a more seamless approach in terms of operational efficiency for property management firms, it’s believed that a greater share of global investment in local real estate can be achieved. Broadening the investor baseFractional ownership via tokenized real estate opens the market up to a broader range of potential investors. On this basis, the collaboration can play a role in contributing towards the objectives of Dubai’s Real Estate Strategy 2033, which sets out to boost the local property sector’s contribution towards gross domestic product (GDP). That initiative targets a real estate market value of AED 1 trillion ($272 billion). The DLD said that the initiative also feeds into the broader objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), a ten-year plan that has been set out to double Dubai’s economy by 2033, through focusing on innovation, achieving competitiveness at a global level and sustainable growth. Helal Almari, the director general of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, commented on the partnership, stating that it reflects the future-focused innovation, which he claims Dubai has already become associated with. He added: “Real Estate and Virtual Assets are key pillars of the D33 Economic Agenda D33 and by joining forces DLD and VARA will be creating the blueprint for RE 2.0 in a Decentralised Future Economy.” Almari expressed the belief that putting legal safeguards in place to recognize fractional ownership rights where real estate is concerned will facilitate “more inclusive economic participation” in this market sector.  The DLD recently launched a real estate tokenization pilot project in collaboration with VARA and the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF). At that time, DLD Director General Marwan Ahmed Bin Ghalita recognized the potential that tokenization can bring to the real estate sector. He stated: “By converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology, tokenization simplifies and enhances buying, selling, and investment processes.”Last month, Scott Thiel, founder and CEO of Dubai-based real-world asset (RWA) token marketplace Tokinvest, outlined that RWA asset tokenization in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is gaining momentum. Commenting on this latest development, Thiel said that it’s a demonstration that “the future of real estate investment is onchain.”

The review determined that there was “no misconduct” within the company. However, both the investment team and senior management took “collective accountability” and experienced a reduction in their compensation.While acknowledging the inherent risks associated with any investment, Temasek emphasized the importance of continuing to invest in new sectors and emerging technologies to understand their potential impact on the business and financial models of existing portfolios. They recognized the need to adapt to an ever-changing world and explore avenues that could drive future value.It’s worth noting that the $275 million loss from the FTX investment constituted only 0.09% of Temasek’s portfolio value, which stood at over $293 billion at the time of the collapse.Temasek maintained that it conducted extensive due diligence before investing in FTX, emphasizing its commitment to a thorough review process. Chairman Lim Boon Heng stated in a May 29 interview with Bloomberg that there was fraudulent conduct intentionally hidden from investors, including Temasek. The negative outcome of the investment has been disappointing for the company and has had a significant impact on its reputation.Reputational damageSingapore Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the financial loss and reputational damage caused by the FTX collapse during a parliamentary meeting in November 2022.During the due diligence process, Temasek reviewed FTX’s financial statements, assessed regulatory risks related to financial service providers in the cryptocurrency market, and sought legal advice. The company also engaged with individuals who had firsthand knowledge of FTX, including employees, investors, and industry participants.In recent news, Temasek addressed and dismissed rumors about a $10 million investment in Array, a developer of algorithmic currency systems based on smart contracts and artificial intelligence. The company clarified that such reports were incorrect, refuting the circulating news articles and tweets.Temasek’s internal review process is certainly a move towards transparency and accountability. It indicates a willingness towards addressing the matter. That said, there are FTX creditor groups who fervently disagree with Temasek’s analysis.Class action lawsuitEarlier this year a number of FTX creditors filed a class action lawsuit against a number of venture capital (VC) firms, including Temasek. The FTX customers maintain that Temasek and others played a role in a conspiracy to defraud them. Venture capital firms have countered with the view that they themselves were victims as a consequence of the FTX collapse, suffering multi-million dollar losses.The fact remains that VCs get much further involved than merely handing over a check. They get involved with marketing, operations, and many other facets of the businesses of their portfolio companies. Meanwhile, other creditors suggest that Temasek has a responsibility to do right by the 1.4 million FTX creditors (a disproportionate number of them being Singapore-based) and to invest in a restructured FTX business, an option that represents the best opportunity for FTX customers to recover their funds.Temasek may have reached certain conclusions by way of their internal report on the matter but this is not likely to be the final analysis relative to its involvement in the fall of FTX.
