Korbit Joins Hands with Shinhan Card and Good Neighbors for NFT Campaign

Web3 & Enterprise·September 21, 2023, 9:35 AM

Korean crypto exchange Korbit said Thursday that it is participating in the Cambodia Youth Independent Tuk-tuk Transportation IG Group organized by the Good Neighbors Global Impact Foundation to help create jobs and support economic stability for youths in Kampot, southern Cambodia. To do so, the exchange has launched a campaign with Korean credit card company Shinhan Card and the Good Neighbors Global Impact Foundation to issue environmental, social, and governance (ESG) donation certificates minted as non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Tuk-tuks, or auto rickshaws, are the main mode of transportation in Cambodia, offering a larger job market for youths who are looking to become financially independent. Yoo Tae-hyun, Head of the Platform Business Group at Shinhan Card, expressed his hopes that the campaign will empower the youths and help them become more independent.

Campaign participation

Shinhan cardholders who wish to participate in the campaign can select “Tuk Tuk Donation Certificate NFT Campaign” found under the Areumin section in Shinhan’s app service Shinhan pLay. They can then make a donation with their card or card points and apply for an NFT. Korbit said that it would airdrop all NFTs to donors at the end of the campaign in December, which can be verified on Korbit’s NFT marketplace and Shinhan pLay app’s MyNFT service. The images minted on the donation NFTs, which depict Cambodian youths on tuk tuks, are a contribution from Park Hye-geun, an artist who has worked on children’s books, educational materials, and more.

Notably, during a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony last Monday, the three entities opted for an NFT certificate confirming their partnership instead of directly signing a document as a means to further implement NFTs into their collaboration.

Boosting ESG efforts

“We are pleased to contribute to creating a trend of making donations through NFTs and will continue to uphold our ESG management to have a positive impact on society,” said Oh Se-jin, CEO of Korbit. Meanwhile, Hyun Jin-young, CEO of the Good Neighbors Global Impact Foundation, applauded Korbit’s efforts to promote a culture of donation and address global social issues through the use of NFTs. He also stated that he looks forward to various technological collaborations with Korbit in the future.

Korbit has previously worked with Shinhan Card on various cultural and artistic ESG activities, such as hosting an art fair in April in Seoul, where some 200 artists showcased their artworks.

EU bans Ruble-backed stablecoin A7A5 in latest round of Russia sanctions

The European Council has banned all transactions within the European Union (EU) involving the Russian Ruble-backed stablecoin A7A5, according to a press release published Oct. 23. The prohibition targets the stablecoin itself, its developer, its Kyrgyzstan-based issuer, and the operator of a platform that facilitates major A7A5 trades. The package also takes aim at Russian crypto exchanges.Photo by Christian Lue on UnsplashAdditional banking restrictionsThis measure is part of a broader set of economic sanctions against sectors the EU stated assist the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including energy, finance, and defense industries. As part of this financial clampdown, the EU will also impose a ban on five additional Russian lenders starting Nov. 12. One of those lenders, Alfa-Bank, recently began offering Bitcoin buying and selling services, according to an X post by journalist Pete Rizzo. The European body said the new crypto measures address Russia’s increasing use of digital assets to circumvent existing sanctions. Russian banks were cut off from the SWIFT international payment system in early 2022, following the onset of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Reports of Russia using cryptocurrency to finance malign activities have surfaced previously. Earlier this month, Sławomir Cenckiewicz, the head of the Polish National Security Bureau (BBN), told the Financial Times that Russia has employed crypto to finance attacks on EU countries. Cenckiewicz said that a network of agents recruited by Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency and uncovered in Poland in 2023 had been substantially funded with cryptocurrency. Reflecting this concern, lawmakers in Poland’s lower house approved a bill in September to strengthen national crypto oversight, a move also expected to help curb Russian funding channels. Cenckiewicz noted that Polish intelligence agencies are closely monitoring the legislation to prevent loopholes that allow foreign actors to support agents using digital assets. Russia’s evolving crypto policyThe EU’s action comes as Russia itself is attempting to refine its own cryptocurrency rules. According to the Moscow Times, Russia's central bank wants to limit cryptocurrency use strictly to cross-border payments within an experimental legal regime (ELR). The institution continues to reject recognition of cryptocurrency as a legal means of payment and has advocated banning its use for domestic payments and retail investment, while permitting trading only for high-net-worth individuals through licensed platforms. Russia’s finance ministry has expressed a more flexible view, pointing to the scale of crypto adoption among the public. Earlier this year, the central bank estimated that domestic crypto transactions exceeded 1 trillion rubles (about $12.4 billion) per month, and that as of March, wallets linked to Russian users held roughly 827 billion rubles (about $10.2 billion). The finance ministry and the central bank have agreed to tighten supervision of the crypto market, with officials expecting to finalize the new framework before the end of the year.

Singapore regulator adds imToken crypto wallet to Investor Alert List

Singapore's Monetary Authority (MAS) has recently added the non-custodial crypto wallet, imToken, to its Investor Alert List, prompting a response from the Singapore-based company.Photo by Zhu Hongzhi on UnsplashIdentifying unregulated entitiesAccording to the official MAS website, imToken found its place on the alert list on Dec. 5. This regulatory move demonstrates that MAS is monitoring the evolving crypto landscape with a view towards safeguarding investors from potential risks. The list serves as a repository of unregulated entities that might be mistakenly perceived as licensed or regulated by MAS. The regulatory body had also flagged BKEX digital asset exchange in December. BKEX had suspended withdrawals earlier in the year, having gotten caught up in an investigation surrounding money laundering activity on the platform. More recently, the company has ceased operations. Company responseIn response to being added to MAS's alert list, imToken took to the X social media platform (formerly Twitter) to address user concerns on Tuesday. The non-custodial wallet clarified that it had not applied for a financial business license in Singapore, the primary reason for its listing. Notwithstanding that, ImToken reassured its users that their assets remain unaffected due to the platform's decentralized nature. The company outlined that it is actively engaging with MAS to clarify its business model and aims to have imToken removed from the Investor Alert List. This development highlights the ongoing dialogue between crypto platforms and regulatory bodies, emphasizing the need for clear communication and compliance within the evolving crypto regulatory landscape. As MAS continues to take decisive actions, the industry remains under scrutiny, necessitating collaboration between regulators and crypto entities for a well-balanced and secure financial ecosystem. Unintended consequencesMAS has taken a proactive approach to regulation in the crypto space. That has been evidenced in previous actions such as blacklisting Binance in 2021, leading to Binance relocating its operations to Dubai. That blacklisting turned out to provide a classic example of the law of unintended consequences. With Binance having removed itself from the local market following the blacklisting, many Singaporeans chose to use FTX instead. FTX subsequently failed in November 2022, leaving a disproportionate number of Singaporean customers out of pocket. The inclusion of imToken on the alert list is particularly noteworthy amid the growing popularity of non-custodial wallets. Statista data from 2022 indicates that 81 million users have adopted non-custodial wallets, providing them with greater control over private keys and crypto assets. However, this surge in usage has also brought about increased regulatory attention due to associated risks. Founded in 2016, imToken was initially launched in Hangzhou, China, prior to relocating its headquarters to Singapore. At various stages, the firm has been funded by companies such as IDG Capital, Qiming Venture Partners and HashKey. HashKey has also collaborated with the company by extending trading services to imToken wallet users, including direct bank transfers. In 2021 imToken partnered with U.S. blockchain infrastructure provider Infinity Stones in order to enable an in-wallet ETH2.0 staking service.

WazirX Founder’s Blockchain Startup Raises $5.4M

WazirX Founder’s Blockchain Startup Raises $5.4MShardeum, a highly-scalable layer-1 blockchain utilizing dynamic state sharding, has successfully closed a strategic raise of $5.4 million. The project was co-founded by Nischal Shetty, who also founded leading Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashWorking towards mainnet launchThe funding round saw participation from prominent investors including Galxe, J17 Capital, JSquare, and TRGC, among others. Singapore’s Amber Group, a digital assets trading, products, and infrastructure firm, also participated. The additional capital will be used to facilitate the expansion of Shardeum’s ecosystem, leading up to the highly anticipated mainnet launch later this year. As part of that launch, it will also introduce $SHM, its native token. 5% of $SHM tokens are being allocated to ecosystem development and to community airdrops. What is Shardeum?Shardeum is a highly-scalable EVM-based layer-1 blockchain that utilizes dynamic state sharding. By employing dynamic state sharding, Shardeum ensures low gas fees and high transactions per second as the network expands. The platform achieves consensus at the transaction level, reducing the computational power required for validator nodes. This composition means that it’s engineered for linear scalability. This consensus mechanism enables broad accessibility and increased decentralization by allowing anyone to run a node. Through the power of dynamic state sharding, Shardeum offers a scalable and secure solution that addresses the blockchain trilemma while ensuring decentralization for all participants.Dynamic state shardingSince its establishment in 2022, Shardeum has been focused on delivering a highly-scalable EVM-based layer-1 blockchain with dynamic state sharding capabilities. As of Friday, the Shardeum testnet has already witnessed over 7.4 million transactions, with over 820,000 accounts and more than 230,000 contracts deployed.Kelsey McGuire, the Chief Growth Officer at Shardeum, expressed enthusiasm about the completion of the strategic raise, emphasizing the company’s commitment to cultivating a global and diverse community. McGuire highlighted Shardeum’s consensus design and the accessibility of validator participation, regardless of users’ computing resources. The additional funding will further support Shardeum’s dedication to decentralization by fostering worldwide community growth through educational initiatives and other key programs.Initial $18.2M seed roundIn addition to the aforementioned investors, the strategic raise attracted notable participants such as Bware Labs, Tané Labs, Hyperithm Group, and Luganodes, among others. This round follows Shardeum’s successful seed round in October 2022, which raised $18.2 million and involved backers such as Jane Street, Big Brain Holdings, Struck Crypto, The Spartan Group, Ghaf Capital, DFG, CoinGecko Ventures, and Foresight Ventures. Funding from that initial seed round went towards hiring more employees, expanding the Shardeum network, and growing its community.A Shardeum project team member told The Block that the raise now places a valuation on the overall company of around $248 million. Shetty recently told Forbes that he believes Shardeum can be a direct competitor to Ethereum. The WazirX Founder outlined that the blockchain was envisioned on the basis of low fees and scalability regardless of the extent of the network growth that transpires.
