The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Thursday at SK-T Tower located in Euljiro, Seoul. SKT’s Web3 Chief Officer, Oh Se-hyeon, and Polygon Labs’ CEO, Marc Boiron, were in attendance.

Polygon Labs is the operator of the Polygon blockchain network, which is critically acclaimed for its superior blockchain performance, scalability, Ethereum compatibility, and more. The firm is also well-known for its engagement with various global enterprises and Web3 projects.

“Polygon Labs has developed optimal blockchain technology for the popularization of Web3, and we expect our collaboration with SKT to serve as a key opportunity to offer Web3 experiences and services to a wider audience,” said Polygon CEO Boiron.

Empowering NFT trade and connectivity

According to the agreement, SKT’s NFT marketplace “TopPort” and the company’s upcoming Web3 wallet will operate on Polygon’s blockchain network. On the other hand, Polygon Labs will aid in integrating SKT’s Web3 services into its global ecosystem.

This will enable NFT creators who use TopPort to trade their NFTs on the Polygon network. In addition, NFTs issued on TopPort will now be tradable on other NFT marketplaces within the Polygon network, enhancing global compatibility and scalability.

SKT and Polygon also plan to allow SKT’s Web3 wallet to be used across various decentralized applications (dApps) within the Polygon ecosystem. Furthermore, they are exploring the possibility of facilitating NFT trading on TopPort using Polygon’s native token, MATIC.

Promoting the advancement of Web3

This partnership aims to drive sustained growth within the Web3 ecosystem, particularly by finding and incubating promising Web3 enterprises. To do so, Polygon Labs is considering investments in Web3 startups endorsed by SKT through its investment arm Polygon Ventures.

SKT’s Web3 Chief Officer Oh expressed high hopes for the synergy between SKT’s blockchain service technology and expertise and Polygon Labs’ infrastructure technology and ecosystem, saying, “This collaboration could become a cornerstone for the future popularization of Web3.”

All of these efforts are geared towards paving the way for Web3’s mainstream adoption, as these two industry giants combine their strengths to spearhead the evolution of the Web3 ecosystem.

Backpack crypto wallet secures VASP license for crypto exchange in Dubai

Backpack crypto wallet secures VASP license for crypto exchange in DubaiThe Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) recently granted a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license to the Backpack crypto wallet project. This development has paved the way for the launch of Backpack Exchange, a crypto trading platform.Details of the licensing approval and exchange launch were provided via a press release published by Backpack on Tuesday. The VASP license obtained by the fledgling startup is specific to crypto exchange services within the Dubai jurisdiction. Although it restricts Backpack from offering other virtual asset products and services, the company is embracing the opportunity via the newly launched exchange.Photo by Wael Hneini on UnsplashBackpack ExchangeThe new exchange, Backpack Exchange, incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as zero-knowledge (ZK) proof-of-reserves, multi-party computation (MPC) for custody and low-latency order execution, among other features. These technologies are poised to enhance the security, privacy and efficiency of the exchange in an effort to set it apart in the competitive crypto market.By all accounts, this will not be the last licensing announcement from Backpack. Over the past five months, Backpack Exchange has been working to secure operational licenses across multiple jurisdictions worldwide. This global expansion showcases the company’s interest in taking its product offering in the form of a secure and transparent trading experience further afield.Fiat-to-dApp bridgeWhile the wallet currently operates without specific regulatory oversight, it serves as a bridge for users to transition seamlessly from fiat to on-chain applications. Armani Ferrante, CEO and Co-Founder of Backpack, expressed his ambition to bring greater transparency to the crypto exchange sphere. He emphasized the importance of trust and verification in a sector often shrouded in opacity.Ferrante believes that leveraging cryptographic techniques such as zk-proofs, MPC, and state machine replication can elevate industry standards. Backpack Exchange aims to set a precedent by providing users with the tools and knowledge to verify transactions, ultimately fostering trust and confidence within the crypto community.Dubai’s VARA regulator has been actively enhancing its crypto-friendly regulatory environment. In February 2023, the regulator issued guidelines for VASPs operating within the emirate, emphasizing the importance of adhering to marketing, advertising, and promotion regulations. Violators may face fines ranging from 20,000 UAE dirhams ($5,500) to 200,000 dirhams, with repeat offenders potentially incurring fines as high as 500,000 dirhams.Solana ecosystem projectBackpack is very much a Solana-centric project. As a lead developer of the layer one blockchain, Ferrante is bullish in terms of future development on the Solana blockchain. His Mad Lads NFT project is the top-rated collection by market cap within the Solana ecosystem. In a podcast earlier this year, he outlined that the prospects for the blockchain are bright going forward. Backpack was first established by crypto infrastructure firm Coral, the creator of Anchor, one of the most popular smart contract developer frameworks for Solana. For existing Backpack and Mad Lads users (Mad Lads is a collection of 9,966 NFTs created by Ferrante), exciting prospects are on the horizon via the new exchange. Initial access to Backpack Exchange will be granted starting in November, with full public availability anticipated in Q1 2024. During this interim period, Backpack plans to introduce various trading functionalities, including derivatives, margin trading and cross-collateralization.

Blade Entertainment partners with Cardo to venture into tokenized securities industry

South Korean entertainment production company Blade Entertainment has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Cardo, a firm specializing in custodial services for digital assets, to start a tokenized securities business, according to local news outlet Newspim on Wednesday. Blade Entertainment revealed plans to leverage its IP and content distribution rights to issue fractional investment-based tokenized securities based on underlying assets like waste landfills, electroceuticals and digital therapeutics.Photo by Verne Ho on UnsplashForging the future to tokenized securities"We will do our best to become a leader in tokenized securities by securing various underlying assets and building technology to facilitate valuation modeling for those assets," said Choi Young-in, head of the STO (security token offering) department at Blade Entertainment. "Through this agreement, we will cooperate in multiple ways with Cardo, who has expertise in blockchain and an understanding of financial products, to list our tokenized securities on the Korea Exchange’s (KRX) new securities market."  This market refers to an on-exchange market for new securities based on fractional investments that was recently designated by the South Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) as a service under the financial regulatory sandbox system, according to a press release on Dec. 13.  The regulatory sandbox is a system run by the Korean government that exempts or suspends existing regulations for a designated amount of time for companies releasing new products and services and regulates them post-mortem if there is a problem.  Strategic collaborationBlade Entertainment said that it sought out Cardo – whose investors include one of South Korea’s major banks Nonghyup Bank – as a business partner to carry out this endeavor due to its accumulated knowledge and expertise in the blockchain sector. Cardo has also previously demonstrated its capabilities in the security token business by providing fintech solutions to financial service firm Galaxia Moneytree. "Currently, due to issues with the valuation of token securities, it is not easy for businesses in this area to operate smoothly, but we plan to issue and distribute tokenized securities of various assets soon," said Sohn Kyung-hwan, CEO of Cardo. "Based on the know-how we’ve accumulated from the two contracts we signed this year agreeing to supply security tokens platforms, we will actively help Blade Entertainment with the planning, design and platform construction of their security token venture to help establish a successful service."
