Play-to-earn game

EF Defense, a play-to-earn game with stunning visual aesthetics similar to Endless Frontier, transports players to the Land of Abundance, where they must fend off a dark and menacing force threatening the continent of Akaros. Armed with 70 diverse heroes and an array of customization options, players will embark on an epic quest to protect their territory and claim rewards for their strategic prowess.

Immutable, a prominent Web3 games publisher headquartered in Australia, is partnering with Weracle to facilitate this transition. The move to the Ethereum scaling network brings the potential for even greater in-game experiences, enhanced security, and unique ownership opportunities through non-fungible tokens (NFTs). While EF Defense already offers hero characters as NFTs on the Ethereum scaling network Polygon, the specific utilization of NFTs and tokens on Immutable zkEVM remains undisclosed.

The gaming industry veterans behind MagmaByte have also caught the NFT wave with their upcoming release, Galaxy Commanders. This player-versus-player (PvP) space shooter, developed by former talents from major gaming companies like Electronic Arts (EA), NCSoft, and Nexon, will utilize the Immutable zkEVM network for its launch. Players can expect action-packed space battles and cooperative planetary conquests, utilizing various strategies to claim victory.

Based on Polygon

Immutable zkEVM is based on Polygon’s zkEVM technology, a layer-2 Ethereum scaling network specially designed for gaming. This integration promises faster and more cost-effective transactions compared to the Ethereum mainnet, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable gaming experience. To cater to gamers new to Web3, Immutable is also working on developing the Passport, a user-friendly wallet to facilitate easy interactions with blockchain-based games.

Weracle’s involvement with blockchain gaming through EF Defense is likely to be just a starting point. The studio has ambitious plans to launch more crypto games in the future, cementing its position in the evolving landscape of blockchain-based gaming. Additionally, a digital Weracle Wallet is in the works, intending to create a holistic ecosystem for players and collectors alike.

Andrew Sorokovsky, VP Of Global Business Development at Immutable, expressed enthusiasm for Weracle’s transition into Web3 gaming, acknowledging the team’s expertise in the traditional gaming space and predicting significant strides in the realm of blockchain-based entertainment.

As EF Defense prepares to enter the world of Immutable zkEVM, players can look forward to an enhanced gaming experience with the added benefits of blockchain technology.

The integration of NFTs and the prospect of play-to-earn mechanics has the potential to make a far bigger impact, provided the correct balance is struck between engaging gameplay and the play-to-earn model dynamic.

Huobi Co-Founder Acquires 10 Million CRV Tokens

Huobi Co-Founder Acquires 10 Million CRV TokensJun Du, Chinese Co-Founder of Seychelles-headquartered global crypto exchange Huobi, has recently completed the purchase of 10 million curve tokens (CRV) from Curve founder Michael Egorov.Photo by Growtika on UnsplashCurve protocol loan exposureThe transaction amounted to $4 million and is part of Egorov’s ongoing efforts to mitigate his at-risk loan exposure, a further consequence of last week’s $52 million hack of the Curve DeFi protocol.Initially, Du expressed his interest in acquiring 10 million CRV tokens at the prevailing rate of $0.40. This price aligned with multiple over-the-counter (OTC) agreements between Egorov and various cryptocurrency individuals. According to a report by The Block, Du later confirmed the purchase through a Twitter direct message, revealing that he had chosen to lock up the acquired tokens as veCRV. This lock-up mechanism grants voting rights within the Curve platform while requiring the tokens to remain locked for a specified duration.“I intend to uphold this lock-up for at least a year, with optimism for continuous improvements within the Curve ecosystem,” Du stated, highlighting his commitment to the project’s long-term growth. On his Twitter account, Du emphasized his unwavering support for Curve, drawing parallels to his past backing of BendDAO during a liquidity crisis. He clarified: “Challenges faced now are transient, and collective support will foster a stronger industry.”Alongside being a Co-Founder at Huobi, Du holds the positions of CEO at New Huo Tech, a digital asset service platform, and Co-Founder and General Partner (GP) at the Web3 fund ABCDE.Ongoing token sell-offIn actively managing liquidation risk, Egorov is persistently offloading CRV tokens to bolster his loan position, given his significant exposure. He has utilized multiple DeFi lending platforms to secure loans, predominantly employing CRV tokens as collateral to borrow stablecoins. His borrowing activity on platforms like Aave alone has involved $56 million in stablecoins against $149 million worth of CRV collateral.Egorov’s health ratings on these platforms have improved recently, hovering around 1.67 or higher. Nonetheless, there remains a lingering risk associated with potential liquidation of his positions if CRV’s price were to dip substantially. This could potentially lead to bad debt scenarios for the platforms, particularly due to the substantial proportion of CRV supply involved.Sales of 72 million CRVEgorov’s token sales have amounted to 72 million CRV, according to Nansen analyst Sandra Leow. Notable recipients of these tokens include Tron Founder Justin Sun, crypto trader “DCFGod,” and Andrew Kang, Co-Founder of Mechanism Capital.Aave Chan Initiative, an entity tied to the Aave protocol, has proposed that the Aave treasury allocate funds to purchase up to $2 million worth of CRV tokens. The intention is to lock up these tokens as veCRV for an extended period, potentially up to four years. This move is aimed at further reinforcing the stability of CRV’s market dynamics.

South Korea to mandate disclosure of crypto funds in home purchases

South Korean authorities will require homebuyers to disclose funds originating from cryptocurrency sales, a move aimed at increasing transparency in the nation's tight real estate market. The new rule is part of a wider government effort to address housing affordability, which is particularly pronounced in Seoul, and to integrate digital assets into its regulatory framework. The change, announced on Sept. 7 as part of new housing supply measures, will alter the mandatory funding plan submitted during property transactions. Proceeds from digital assets will be listed as a distinct category, similar to funds from stocks or bonds. Officials are also expanding loan disclosure requirements to include business loans and overseas borrowing, closing potential financing loopholes.Photo by Traxer on UnsplashImpact of asset volatility on property valuesThe policy follows growing evidence that volatility in assets like cryptocurrency can spill over into the property market. A 2024 study cited by Maeil Business Newspaper highlighted that both the COVID-era stock rally and Bitcoin's 2023 price surge had a discernible impact on housing values. According to Yu Jung-suk, a professor at Dankook University, apartments in Seoul's affluent Gangnam district are particularly sensitive to fluctuations in Bitcoin and the KOSDAQ index. He noted that high-profile property acquisitions by young crypto investors, even if few in number, can significantly sway market sentiment. Professor Yu suggested that regulators may need more comprehensive tools to manage the risks connecting different asset classes. The government's new measures also seek to cool the capital's housing market, where prices have continued to rise despite a slowdown in growth. In contrast, prices in areas outside Seoul have been declining since 2022. To address the supply-demand imbalance, officials plan to begin construction of 1.35 million new homes in the Seoul metropolitan area between 2026 and 2030. Stablecoin regulation and CBDC trials advanceBeyond real estate, officials are developing a formal regulatory structure for stablecoins. The Presidential Commission on Policy Planning is reportedly considering a model where a consortium of banks and fintech firms would be granted rights to issue a won-pegged stablecoin. Supervision for this new system would fall to a proposed Financial Stability Council, a body intended to serve as a central coordinator for financial policy, comprising the finance ministry, the Bank of Korea, and other regulators. The initiative aims to combine the stability of the traditional banking sector with the innovation of non-bank financial companies. The evolving regulatory environment is attracting attention from global industry leaders. Executives from Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, met with Shinhan Financial Group CEO Jin Ok-dong in Seoul on Sept. 8. While Tether representatives stated they were monitoring the regulatory climate, they confirmed no specific business plans were discussed. Separately, the Bank of Korea is moving forward with digital currency experiments. In partnership with government agencies and six major commercial banks, the central bank will launch a pilot program to test the use of a digital currency for distributing state subsidies and vouchers.

Korean Crypto Exchange Operator Airdrops NFTs to Raise Biodiversity Awareness

Korean Crypto Exchange Operator Airdrops NFTs to Raise Biodiversity AwarenessDunamu, the operator of Upbit, one of South Korea’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges, made an announcement on Thursday regarding its initiative to raise awareness about biodiversity threatened by climate change. In collaboration with four organizations affiliated with the Ministry of Environment, Dunamu plans to transform Climate-Sensitive Biological Indicator Species (CBIS) into non-fungible tokens (NFTs), as reported by news media Daily Hankook.Photo by Alin Andersen on UnsplashAffected biological speciesCBIS encompasses biological species that have experienced significant changes in their seasonal activities, distribution areas, and population sizes due to climate change. These species require ongoing research and management by the government. The National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR) of the Ministry of Environment compiled a list of 100 such species in July 2010. This list was created to facilitate the efficient monitoring of climate change’s impact on the distribution and vulnerability of biological species on the Korean Peninsula. The initiative is part of the Resource Circulation Climate Action Campaign organized by Dunamu with four environment agencies, namely the NIBR, the Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources (NNIBR), the Honam National Institute of Biological Resources (HNIBR), and the National Institute of Ecology (NIE). Its key objective is to protect the habitats of plants and animals while raising awareness about biodiversity conservation.Species vanishing every 15 minutesWith climate change causing the extinction of one species every 15 minutes, the project aims to raise awareness about this distressing trend. In pursuit of this goal, 15 NFT editions will be distributed through four separate events over the course of a year, commencing on May 19. The participating artists include Jjawook, an artist with developmental disabilities; Jin Kwan-woo, an artist renowned for depicting endangered species using the Korean alphabet Hangul; and members of the Botanical Artists Society of Korea.NFT release planThe initial set of NFTs to be airdropped includes three species: the warbling white-eye, the common camellia, and the house holly-fern. These species have historically inhabited coastal regions of islands. However, as a result of climate change, their distribution and habitat have been shifting towards inland or northern areas. To obtain CBIS NFTs, individuals can visit Dunamu’s metaverse platform 2ndblock. Once there, they will have the opportunity to engage in a resource collection mission. Upon successfully completing the mission, users will receive an NFT gift code. To claim their NFTs, they need to register the provided NFT gift code on the Upbit NFT marketplace.Dunamu CEO Lee Sirgoo expressed his hope that the project would have a positive impact on raising awareness about biodiversity conservation on the Korean Peninsula, which is under threat from climate change. He stated that Dunamu intends to continue utilizing its technology and expertise in diverse ways to contribute to a sustainable future and environment.HNIBR Director Ryu Tae-chul believes that the campaign will encourage recycling in communities to reduce carbon emissions and serve as an inspiration for individuals to actively engage in initiatives that promote a sustainable and biologically diverse planet.
