Matrixport Focuses on US Market With New Appointment

Web3 & Enterprise·July 11, 2023, 12:07 AM

Matrixport, the Singapore-based cryptocurrency trading and lending platform, has announced a new appointment to lead its operations in the United States.

US institutional-focused business

That’s according to a recent report published by The Block. Mo Zhou, previously the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Matrixport in the US, will now take charge of the company’s institutional-focused business lines in the country. This move comes as Anthony DeMartino, the former US CEO, steps down from his role and assumes an advisory position within the company.

Anthony DeMartino, a seasoned trading veteran, joined Matrixport approximately a year ago from Coinbase, where he led Coinbase Risk Strategies. Prior to that, he held senior trading positions at prominent financial institutions such as UBS, Barclays, and HSBC, culminating in his role as the Head of LATAM Rates Trading at HSBC.

When DeMartino was hired, Matrixport highlighted its international growth plans in the US, expressing its commitment to expanding its presence despite regulatory challenges faced by crypto businesses in the country.

The recent announcement reaffirms that Matrixport’s plans for growth in the US remain intact. Ross Gan, Head of Public Relations and Brand for Matrixport, stated that Anthony DeMartino has transitioned to an advisory role while Mo Zhou, the newly appointed COO, will oversee the day-to-day operations in the United States.

Prominent Asian crypto business

Mo Zhou brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having worked in derivatives and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) for ten years. He is a Harvard-trained lawyer and is well-equipped to lead Matrixport’s institutional-focused business lines in the US.

As one of the larger cryptocurrency businesses in Asia, Matrixport boasts a global workforce of over 290 employees. The company’s impressive figures include more than $700 million in outstanding loans and a monthly trading volume of $5 billion, as stated on its website.

Bullish price prediction

Matrixport has garnered some attention for its Bitcoin price predictions over recent weeks. Last month, the company pointed out that its Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index had surged towards the greedier end of the spectrum. At the time, the Bitcoin price stood at $31,200. The firm predicted a cooling over the shorter term in that price action. At the time of publication, the Bitcoin unit price stands at $30,300, having dipped below the $30,000 mark on a number of occasions.

Last week, Matrixport’s Head of Research and Strategy, Markus Thielen, suggested that Bitcoin is heading towards a unit price of $125,000 by the end of 2024. Thielen maintained that Bitcoin recording a one year high unit price on June 22 signified the end of the bear market, and the start of a bull market. Thielen and Matrixport find themselves in good company as on Monday, international financial services firm Standard Chartered predicted a Bitcoin unit price of $50,000 by year end and a price of $120,000 by the end of 2024.

Matrixport’s appointment of Mo Zhou reflects its ongoing commitment to expanding its operations and solidifying its presence in the United States. With Zhou at the helm of the company’s US business, the company is positioning itself to navigate the evolving cryptocurrency landscape and continue its growth trajectory in this developing market.

Over Half of Leading Korean Conglomerates Are Venturing Into Web3 and Blockchain

Over Half of Leading Korean Conglomerates Are Venturing Into Web3 and BlockchainMore than half of South Korea’s conglomerates are ushering in the emerging era of Web3 in an attempt to seize new business opportunities presented by a decentralized internet that permits open access and sharing of resources as well as ownership of personal data.Photo by Abbe Sublett on UnsplashSurging interest among Korea’s biggest enterprisesAccording to a survey conducted by local news outlet E Today, 46 of Korea’s top 82 corporations as designated by the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) are pursuing ventures in Web3 and blockchain this year, including those related to non-fungible tokens (NFTs), security tokens, and logistics chains. The survey examined whether the corporations had issued coins, tokens, or NFTs; whether they had corporate divisions or subsidiaries dedicated to blockchain-related projects; and whether they had made investments in blockchain or digital asset-related companies as well as coin and token issuance projects. It was conducted remotely using publicly disclosed information and press releases.Of the 82 total companies, 48 are under the mutual investment restriction system, which prohibits independent corporations from investing their capital in the form of an exchange. Commercial law prohibits mutual stock holdings between parent companies and their subsidiaries in order to prevent a processive increase in company assets through mutual investments. Of those 48, the survey revealed that 32 are engaged in blockchain and Web3-related projects.Nearly 60.42% of the mutual investment restriction group and 48.78% of the total survey group were found to have become involved in the field by signing business deals with blockchain and digital asset-related companies or utilizing blockchain technology themselves. On the other hand, only seven corporations, or 8.54%, had directly issued digital assets or invested in related companies. On the other hand, 26 firms, or 31.71%, invested in NFT-related businesses.Navigating the path to Web3 adoptionHowever, although Web3 is gaining traction as the next generation of future innovation, it has not yet become the dominant trend as Web3 platforms have yet to attract a significant user base. This hindrance can be attributed to the ongoing crypto winter and strict financial regulations.Woo Jong-soo, Director of the Pohang University of Science and Technology’s (POSTECH) Blockchain Research Center and a professor at POSTECH’s Graduate School of Information and Communication, also pointed out that in order for blockchain to exert its influence as an innovative technology, it should be open to the public like Bitcoin. There will be limitations in implementing centralized private blockchains into corporate businesses, he said. But despite these challenges, major leading companies are still pushing their own Web3 and blockchain projects. “The current situation is not an ideal time for diving into Web3 and blockchain businesses, but everyone is quietly preparing while waiting for regulatory uncertainties to be resolved,” said an anonymous developer working at a major corporation.Notably, Park Hye-jin, a professor at the Seoul School of Integrated Sciences and Technologies, revealed that she had received separate Web3 business consultation requests from several teams under the same division of a particular corporation and that these teams were essentially unaware of each others’ ventures into the field. The corporation, which ostensibly announced that it had closed its business, also continues to request consultations, she claimed, highlighting the corporate world’s acknowledgment of Web3’s potential.“Individuals can now monetize and have control over their data, which big tech companies like Facebook and Instagram used to own,” Park explained. “The essence of Web3 is that it is ushering in an era where users have the ability to take initiative.”

Ondo Finance announces APAC expansion

U.S.-based crypto startup Ondo Finance, a financial infrastructure firm that concerns itself with the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs), has officially revealed its intention to expand into the Asia Pacific (APAC) area, with the inauguration of its first office in the region. In a press release published by the company on Sunday, Ondo clarified that the expansion is a direct response to the escalating interest in digital assets throughout Asia. That interest the company attributes to factors such as a flourishing crypto community, shifting regulatory environments and a growing appetite for exposure to U.S. assets.Photo by Florian Wehde on Unsplash40% market shareAt present, Ondo Finance holds a 40% share of the global market where tokenized RWAs are concerned. That market share has been driven by its three main tokenized product offerings: OUSG, designed for exposure to U.S. Treasuries; OMMF, facilitating exposure to U.S. money market funds; and USDY, positioned as a yield-bearing alternative to traditional stablecoins. These products serve as a conduit for global investors to access U.S.-based asset classes in tokenized form, aligning with the rising trend of digital asset adoption. To spearhead its APAC expansion initiative, Ondo Finance has appointed Ashwin Khosa as the vice president of business development in the region. Khosa brings nearly a decade of experience in Hong Kong-based institutional business development, having worked with multinational financial services company Citi, alongside key crypto firms such as Tether and its sister company, Bitfinex. His expertise encompasses both on-chain finance and a profound understanding of the APAC market. Khosa stated: “The team is top-notch and the mission of bringing real world assets onchain is extremely important. I look forward to working closely with partners in the region to help investors gain access to this next generation of high-quality assets.” Founded in 2021 with roots tied to the Goldman Sachs Digital Assets team and supported by leading venture capitalists including Founders Fund, Pantera Capital and Coinbase Ventures, Ondo Finance is looking to solidify its position as a dominant force in this newly emerging market on the back of nearly 40% of the global market share in tokenized securities. Nathan Allman, the founder and CEO of Ondo, expressed his excitement about the expansion, stating:“We’re very excited about our expansion into APAC. There is an active and rapidly growing crypto community and an appreciation for the type of high-quality exposure to US assets that our tokens provide.” Suspected token dumpIn a related development on Monday, on-chain sleuths have presented data that may indicate a sell-off of $11 million worth of ONDO tokens, the project’s native token. 20 million tokens were sold, with the suggestion that the token unit price fell in tandem with that market activity. Earlier on Monday, the token traded at $0.3062. At the time of writing, it's trading at $0.25. This expansion into the APAC region follows a string of pivotal developments for Ondo, including the revelation of its strategic roadmap and partnerships within the Ondo ecosystem. Additionally, the Ondo Foundation has introduced a points program and a proposed unlocking of its ONDO token, marking an integral part of the company's ongoing growth and development.
