Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index (GFI)

The index, which tracks market sentiments, has skyrocketed from below 10% to a staggering 93%. Such a rapid increase indicates a prevailing sense of greed and excessive optimism among Bitcoin investors. As a result, industry experts are suggesting that a breather in the ongoing Bitcoin rally may be on the cards.

Markus Thielen, the Head of Research and Strategy at Matrixport, has advised short-term traders to consider capitalizing on their gains given the exuberant levels recorded by the Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index. Historical analysis reveals that readings above 90% have often signaled interim tops in Bitcoin’s price, while readings below 10% have preceded notable price rallies.

Upward movement favorable

Despite the current high reading, the 21-day simple moving average of the index remains below the critical 90% mark. This implies that the overall trajectory for Bitcoin still favors upward movement. Thielen points out that the rising 21-day moving average indicates the potential for further upside once the current phase of exuberance subsides, allowing for consolidation in the market.

Chart analysts share an optimistic view of Bitcoin’s future, with some predicting a potential rally towards the $35,000 mark and beyond. Josh Olszewicz, Head of Research at digital asset investment firm Valkyrie, highlights a falling wedge setup in Bitcoin’s recent price action.

The successful bounce off the support level, combined with the completion of the falling wedge pattern, has heightened expectations for a move towards the mid-$30,000 range. Olszewicz does caution that significant resistance may arise in that zone, likely leading to a subsequent period of re-consolidation before any further upward progress can be made.

In recent weeks, Bitcoin experienced a pullback from its mid-April high of $31,000, eventually finding support around the $25,200 level earlier this month. This pullback, often referred to as a “throwback,” historically acts as a catalyst for price rallies, as has been evident in the past few days.

Ether gain potential

While Bitcoin’s rally has been impressive, Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has seen a gain of 15.9% since last Thursday. However, Ether’s GFI index has yet to reach the 90% threshold, indicating potential room for further growth while Bitcoin takes a breather.

Matrixport’s Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index has surged to an astonishing 93%, signaling heightened levels of greed and optimism among Bitcoin investors. Traders are advised to consider securing their gains as the index reaches exuberant levels.

Nonetheless, the rising 21-day moving average suggests the potential for Bitcoin’s upward momentum to continue following a period of consolidation. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading around $31,200, based on CoinGecko data. Going into the weekend, that’s demonstrating continued growth. Meanwhile, Ether shows promising performance, with potential for further growth.

Kyber Network implements workforce reduction following exploit

In the aftermath of a substantial security breach in November that resulted in a confirmed loss of over $48 million, Kyber Network, the multi-chain decentralized exchange (DEX) aggregator, has taken decisive steps to restructure its operations.Photo by kate.sade on UnsplashWorking towards recoveryCEO and co-founder Victor Tran posted a lengthy message on the X social media platform on Christmas Eve to announce a 50% reduction in the firm’s workforce. The move marks a pivotal moment in the company’s efforts to recover and rebuild. As part of its strategy to ensure sustainability, Kyber temporarily suspended its liquidity protocol initiatives and KyberAI. Despite these challenging measures, the core aggregator and limit order functions remain fully operational. Tran emphasized the company’s commitment to persist and evolve, highlighting its determination to navigate through recent adversities. Despite these challenging measures, the core aggregator and limit order functions remain fully operational. Tran emphasized the company’s commitment to persist and evolve, highlighting its determination to navigate through recent adversities. Zap API additionIn an effort to enhance its services, Kyber Network disclosed plans to introduce the Zap API. This new offering aims to provide decentralized applications, crypto wallets and other DeFi projects with a seamless means to connect their users to liquidity protocols. Tran also revealed that in an effort to support its workforce during the transition, the firm has established a “voluntary database” to assist departing employees in finding new career opportunities. This initiative seeks to connect these individuals with peer projects in the industry. Exploit fall-outKyber Network took to social media on Nov. 22 to advise its KyberSwap Elastic user base of a security incident. With that notification, it advised users to withdraw their funds immediately. Over the next few days, it became clear that $48 million had been exploited on the platform by a hacker. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the hacker posted a message on the blockchain, stating: “Negotiations will start in a few hours when I am fully rested.” He/she progressed to issuing unusual demands, including gaining complete operational control of the company and temporary ownership of the KyberDAO governance mechanism. The nature of these demands sets this particular exploit apart from others. The Kyber team, however, chose to reject these demands. It chose to respond with a blockchain message of its own, outlining that it was cooperating with law enforcement in an effort to track the hacker. The company, which operates from offices in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore, also offered the hacker a carrot of a 10% bounty if the hacker agreed to return 90% of users’ funds. Instead, the firm pledged to compensate affected users through the KyberSwap Elastic Exploit Treasury Grant Program. On Dec. 20, the firm provided further details on that grant program, outlining how affected users would be refunded. Furthermore, Kyber Network is actively collaborating with authorities to identify the hacker and recover the stolen funds.Earlier this month, blockchain security firm CertiK issued an alert on social media, outlining that the hacker had moved BNB tokens to the value of $338,000 into decentralized crypto tumbler Tornado Cash.

Shanghai officials potentially signaling openness to stablecoins

The Shanghai office of a Chinese regulatory body which oversees assets belonging to state-owned enterprises (SOEs) is reported to have held a session dedicated to the topic of digital assets and in particular, stablecoins, fueling speculation of a positive shift in outlook on crypto in China.Photo by Hanny Naibaho on UnsplashOn July 11, Reuters reported that the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) held the meeting in Shanghai on July 10, with the publication suggesting that the event represented “a marked shift in tone” in the consideration of digital assets in China, bearing in mind that crypto trading and mining are banned within the country. Following the “development trend and response strategies” study session, He Qing, director of the organization, said that there was a need for "greater sensitivity to emerging technologies and enhanced research into digital currencies." The regulator called on Chinese state-backed agencies to consider the adoption of blockchain technology for use cases like real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, supply chain finance and cross-border trade. A policy expert from Shanghai-headquartered securities firm, Guotai Haitong Securities, attended the meeting, outlining details on the history, characteristics and categories of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, while also discussing global regulatory frameworks. Last month, a subsidiary company of Guotai Haitong Securities, Guotai Junan International (GTJAI), became the first company from the Chinese mainland to be given approval by the Hong Kong securities regulator to offer digital asset trading services. Adapting to the stablecoin trendIn June, state-owned financial newspaper, Securities Times, called on Beijing to adapt “to the trend of stablecoins.” The publication claimed that industry insiders “generally believe that, as an emerging payment tool, the unique advantages and potential risks of stablecoins cannot be ignored, and that the development of [yuan-backed] stablecoins should be sooner rather than later”. The same month, Pan Gongsheng, governor of the People’s Bank of China, acknowledged that stablecoins are playing a role in disrupting global payments infrastructure.  It also emerged recently that JD.com, a Chinese e-commerce giant, and Ant Group, an affiliate company of the Alibaba Group, have been lobbying the Chinese authorities for the authorization of yuan-based stablecoins. On X, Shanghai Macro Strategist, a China strategist, claimed that the recent surge in the Bitcoin unit price had come about as a consequence of this stablecoin-focused SASAC meeting in Shanghai. At the time of writing, BTC has appreciated 9.3% over the course of the past seven days. The strategist suggests that the event is fueling speculation that “the Chinese government may be in the early stages of reassessing its official stance on the crypto industry.” In their monthly report for May, the strategist pointed out that “Beijing’s outright rejection of [Bitcoin] as a legitimate asset” was holding the leading asset back on its path to “reserve status.” The strategist added: “Over the longer term, a shift in China’s stance could prove to be the single most powerful bullish catalyst—elevating Bitcoin from a fringe asset to a globally recognized store of value.”
