Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index (GFI)

The index, which tracks market sentiments, has skyrocketed from below 10% to a staggering 93%. Such a rapid increase indicates a prevailing sense of greed and excessive optimism among Bitcoin investors. As a result, industry experts are suggesting that a breather in the ongoing Bitcoin rally may be on the cards.

Markus Thielen, the Head of Research and Strategy at Matrixport, has advised short-term traders to consider capitalizing on their gains given the exuberant levels recorded by the Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index. Historical analysis reveals that readings above 90% have often signaled interim tops in Bitcoin’s price, while readings below 10% have preceded notable price rallies.

Upward movement favorable

Despite the current high reading, the 21-day simple moving average of the index remains below the critical 90% mark. This implies that the overall trajectory for Bitcoin still favors upward movement. Thielen points out that the rising 21-day moving average indicates the potential for further upside once the current phase of exuberance subsides, allowing for consolidation in the market.

Chart analysts share an optimistic view of Bitcoin’s future, with some predicting a potential rally towards the $35,000 mark and beyond. Josh Olszewicz, Head of Research at digital asset investment firm Valkyrie, highlights a falling wedge setup in Bitcoin’s recent price action.

The successful bounce off the support level, combined with the completion of the falling wedge pattern, has heightened expectations for a move towards the mid-$30,000 range. Olszewicz does caution that significant resistance may arise in that zone, likely leading to a subsequent period of re-consolidation before any further upward progress can be made.

In recent weeks, Bitcoin experienced a pullback from its mid-April high of $31,000, eventually finding support around the $25,200 level earlier this month. This pullback, often referred to as a “throwback,” historically acts as a catalyst for price rallies, as has been evident in the past few days.

Ether gain potential

While Bitcoin’s rally has been impressive, Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has seen a gain of 15.9% since last Thursday. However, Ether’s GFI index has yet to reach the 90% threshold, indicating potential room for further growth while Bitcoin takes a breather.

Matrixport’s Bitcoin Greed & Fear Index has surged to an astonishing 93%, signaling heightened levels of greed and optimism among Bitcoin investors. Traders are advised to consider securing their gains as the index reaches exuberant levels.

Nonetheless, the rising 21-day moving average suggests the potential for Bitcoin’s upward momentum to continue following a period of consolidation. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading around $31,200, based on CoinGecko data. Going into the weekend, that’s demonstrating continued growth. Meanwhile, Ether shows promising performance, with potential for further growth.

Bitget invests in Morph layer 2 network

Bitget invests in Morph layer 2 networkBitget, the Seychelles-incorporated crypto derivatives exchange, has injected a multi-million dollar investment into Morph, a Layer 2 blockchain that puts consumer experience at the forefront.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashCombining zero knowledge and optimistic rollupsThe collaboration, unveiled on Monday, signals a significant stride toward cultivating a novel, value-driven decentralized application (dApp) ecosystem. Morph, formerly known as Morphism, has garnered attention for its unique use of roll-up technology. By seamlessly blending optimistic and zero-knowledge (ZK) roll-ups, Morph aims to revolutionize scalability, reduce cost barriers, expedite dispute resolutions and ensure secure and adaptable transactions. The project’s modular framework allows individual components of the ecosystem to evolve independently, staying abreast of rapid innovations in consumer applications.Combating MEVA distinctive feature of Morph’s design is the Decentralized Sequencer Network, a mechanism that ensures swift and cost-effective Layer 2 transactions. This challenges the dominance of maximal extractable value (MEV) and eradicates central points of control. MEV involves the maximum amount of value that can be extracted from a block on a blockchain network. It may be manipulated through the ordering and sequencing of transactions on the chain.Technological innovation is not the sole objective of the Morph development team. Their ambition extends to creating a space where dApps seamlessly integrate into users’ daily lives, delivering tangible value. This consumer-centric approach prioritizes user experience through easy onboarding processes and intuitive interfaces. The network is attractive to developers due to lower cost barriers and accelerated dispute resolution.Gracy Chen, Managing Director of Bitget, underscored the significance of the collaboration, praising Morph’s exceptional team, multicultural approach and strategic capabilities. Chen notes that Morph’s emphasis on a decentralized and consumer-centric approach aligns seamlessly with Bitget’s vision. This partnership, she believes, has the potential to transform the blockchain space, making the technology more accessible for everyday use and unlocking widespread consumer adoption.Cecilia Hsueh, Co-Founder and CEO of Morph, expressed gratitude for Bitget’s support, emphasizing that the recent capital infusion underscores confidence in Morph’s unique value proposition, setting the stage for an upcoming seed funding round. The strategic alliance with Bitget provides Morph with a robust platform for growth, tapping into Bitget’s expansive user base of 20 million exchange users and 12 million Bitget Wallet users. Notably, Morph had previously entered into a strategic alliance with Foresight Ventures, a crypto fund based in Singapore.Looking ahead, Morph is gearing up for significant milestones as it develops further. The project plans to intensify the refinement of its technical framework and broader ecosystem in the coming months. Notably, Morph is slated to launch its public testnet in January 2024, followed by the beta mainnet of its Optimistic zkEVM, which is scheduled for Q2 2024.As Bitget continues to forge ties with up-and-coming Web3 entities, this collaboration with Morph has the potential to propel the project towards its strategic goals but also sets the stage for a transformative shift in the landscape of Layer 2 solutions.

Profitability eludes Canaan despite further growth

Beijing-headquartered crypto mining equipment manufacturer Canaan recently revealed its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2023, demonstrating that it continues to struggle with profitability despite positive numbers relative to revenues and growth.Photo by Sasun Bughdaryan on UnsplashIncreased revenues and salesAccording to the company’s filing, during the last quarter of 2023 Canaan reported a surge of 45.7% in total computing power sold compared to the preceding quarter, reaching 5.5 million Thash/s. This ascent, which reflects a 191.9% increase from the same period in 2022, signifies not just a recovery but a robust resurgence in demand and operational ability. The company's dispatch of 19.6 million Thash/s throughout the year, marking a 29.6% leap from 2022, aligns with the rebound in bitcoin prices observed in Q4 2023, a pivotal factor shaping Canaan's operational revitalization. 47% growth on previous quarterA closer examination of the financials reveals not only surpassing total revenues but also a notable 47.3% quarter-over-quarter growth. Canaan's foray into international markets, bolstered by securing substantial orders from esteemed public company clients, underscores a buoyant sales performance and a positive outlook for the computing sector. Despite the buoyant sales and revenue figures particularly in the mining machine market, the sector has faced ongoing regulatory uncertainties and market fluctuations. Nonetheless, the company's strategic initiatives, alongside the positive market effects of the approval and listing of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), have been positive. Moreover, Canaan's investments in wafer supply capabilities and strategic financial maneuvers garnered approximately US$136 million through at-the-market (ATM) programs and preferred shares. Recording a lossYet, the company’s journey in 2023 was not without its hurdles. Q4 2023 witnessed a significant increase in product revenues from the previous quarter but a decline from Q4 2022, attributed to dwindling sales prices as the halving event loomed, underscoring the volatility inherent in the cryptocurrency market. Results published last year are indicative of the company’s difficulty. In Q2 2023, revenues were strong, yet the company wasn’t turning a profit. With Q4 results, it’s now clear that the firm lost $421 million in 2023. In Q4, Canaan recorded a net loss of $139 million. That compares with a loss of $91 million in Q4, 2022. The company also expects tough market conditions in 2024. In its forward-looking outlook, it stated:”For the first quarter of 2024, and the second quarter of 2024, the Company expects total revenues to be approximately US$33 million and US$70 million, respectively, considering the challenging market conditions across the industry. This forecast reflects the Company’s current and preliminary views on the market and operational conditions, which are subject to change.” The crypto mining sector remains a very challenging market. With the upcoming Bitcoin halving event set to occur in April, it’s expected that as much as 20% of mining capacity could be forced offline, as some equipment would simply fail to mine on a profitable basis. Indicative of the challenges within the sector, crypto miner Core Scientific was forced into bankruptcy due to market difficulties in December 2022. It has only recently exited that bankruptcy process and now expects to generate revenues of $600 million in 2024. Another Bitcoin miner, Riot Platforms, has warned that profitability may be difficult to achieve in 2024 due to chip shortages.

New Kazakh Platform Underscores Binance’s Push Eastwards

New Kazakh Platform Underscores Binance’s Push EastwardsGlobal cryptocurrency exchange Binance is making a significant move towards the East in response to mounting regulatory challenges in Western markets. The exchange has recently launched a regulated digital asset platform in Kazakhstan, marking a milestone in its expansion strategy. The announcement was made during a press conference held on June 20, attended by distinguished guests including representatives from Kazakhstan’s banking sector and Binance Kazakhstan’s leadership. The company followed up with a blog post detailing the development, published to its website on Wednesday. This milestone achievement follows Binance’s preliminary approval for operations in Kazakhstan received last August. By October, the Astana Financial Services Authority (AIFC) granted the exchange a permanent license to establish a digital asset platform and provide custodial services at the Astana International Financial Center.Photo by Engin Akyurt on PexelsBespoke platformThe newly established Binance platform in Kazakhstan aims to cater specifically to the needs of Kazakhstani users. It offers a comprehensive suite of services encompassing cryptocurrency exchange, conversion, fiat currency deposits and withdrawals, as well as custody of crypto assets. These financial services will be facilitated through a partnership with Freedom Finance Bank, Kazakhstan’s banking partner for Binance. Users of the platform will be able to transfer fiat funds to their accounts, with deposits and withdrawals currently supported through bank transfers or bank cards via Freedom Finance Bank.Adverse Western market conditionsBinance’s expansion into Kazakhstan comes at a time when the exchange is grappling with legal challenges in the United States and several European countries. In the US, Binance is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).Last month, Binance announced its withdrawal from the Canadian market, citing regulatory changes which the company described as “untenable.” Meanwhile, in Europe, the company has faced regulatory pushback, including an investigation into alleged “aggravated money laundering” in France and its exit from the Dutch market due to the absence of a virtual asset service provider license.Binance’s withdrawal from European markets has been attributed to its efforts to comply with the European Union’s approved Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulations, although there are reports indicating collaboration between European regulators and the SEC in their investigations into Binance.Eastern expansionWhile Binance has been facing ongoing setbacks in Western markets, it continues to expand eastwards. Late last month, the firm announced plans to establish a dedicated platform in Japan. Around the same time, it secured a trading license through its Thai joint venture company.Binance is not the only major crypto firm making a strategic shift towards Asia. Other global cryptocurrency exchanges such as Gemini and Coinbase, have also expressed their intention to strengthen their presence in the Asia Pacific region. This trend highlights a broader pattern of the crypto exchange landscape gradually shifting towards the East, reflecting a reconfiguration of the global market. As Binance expands its regulated operations in Kazakhstan, it aims to navigate the complex regulatory environment and continue providing secure and compliant services to users in a key market. The move not only positions Binance strategically but also underscores the evolving dynamics that may well be playing into a regional shift in leadership where the development of digital assets is concerned.
