A financial breakdown

The Hong Kong-based Web3 firm published the interim financial report to its website. Breaking that down further, the company is holding $194 million in cash and stablecoin reserves. Additionally, $566 million is being held in liquid digital assets. This includes reserves of $SAND, the native token of the Ethereum-based Sandbox virtual metaverse.

Beyond this, Animoca holds $2.7 billion in a varied portfolio of digital asset reserves, linked to its majority owned Web3 subsidiaries and portfolio companies. The firm outlined that it intends to release additional financial updates in the near future. That will include an audited financial statement for 2020. Furthermore, a summary statement of business activity for 2022 will be released, together with similar business highlights pertaining to Q1, 2023.

Adjusting to changing market conditions

It’s likely that Animoca took the decision to release this data at this point to bolster confidence in the company, off the back of a number of announcements that may have led some in the industry to question the overall financial health of the company.

According to a report published in March by Reuters, Animoca Brands cut its target for its metaverse fund by 20% to $800 million. The scaling back was understood by many crypto sector commentators to be a reaction by the company due to changing market conditions within the crypto space. It was the second such adjustment the company made. In November 2022, the firm was working on the new fund, initially proposing a target of $2 billion. Once January came around, Animoca took the decision to scale that target back by half to $1 billion.

Subsequent to reports of the fund scale-back being published, Animoca Brands CEO Yat Siu reacted, telling one crypto media outlet that “the claim that the Animoca Capital fund target was ‘cut’ from $2 billion to $1 billion is not correct, because $1 billion has always been within the range declared.”

Playing down the news further, the company added: “There’s no doubt that the FTX and banking crises have had a serious impact on available venture capital, but fundraising for the Animoca Capital fund is in progress. When the raise is concluded, we will inform the market with the appropriate details, including the final size of this fund.”

Siu stated that as the source of that report was an unnamed source, it was difficult to figure out the agenda of that person in broadcasting that claim.

Animoca is perceived in the industry as a key player, particularly so when it comes to NFTs, blockchain-based gaming and the metaverse. The firm is classed as a Crypto Top 40 company by Forbes, while being a winner of Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 award. Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 program ranks fast growing companies based upon their percentage revenue growth over the course of three years.

Coti plans transition to Ethereum layer-2 network in 2024

Coti plans transition to Ethereum layer-2 network in 2024Israeli blockchain developer Coti plans to introduce a scalable, privacy-focused Ethereum layer-2 protocol in 2024. This strategic move aims to extend Coti’s privacy-centric features to a wider audience within the Ethereum ecosystem.Photo by Zoltan Tasi on UnsplashIncorporating ‘garbled circuits’Taking to the X social media platform on Wednesday, Coti unveiled its plan to transition from a standalone protocol to an Ethereum layer-2. The centerpiece of the project, which Coti has termed “Coti v2: a privacy-centric Ethereum L2,” is a cryptographic method known as “garbled circuits.”Garbled circuits are a cryptographic primitive that enables two or more parties to evaluate an arbitrary Boolean circuit securely, without revealing any information beyond the output, all while using a constant number of communication rounds. This innovative approach enables the processing of transactions without exposing sensitive information and data, aligning with the platform’s commitment to privacy.Having originated in the 1980s, garbling protocols have evolved into a crucial element of privacy-preserving technologies, excelling in scenarios where confidential data needs to be part of a computation without revealing the information itself.Focusing on privacyCoti CEO Shahaf Bar-Geffen emphasized the significance of this privacy-oriented protocol, stating:“Sensitive data transmitted as public information on a blockchain is a bug, not a feature.”Bar-Geffen highlighted the protocol’s ability to prevent sensitive data from being exposed to competitors, partners and clients engaged in transactions on Coti’s chain. The CEO elaborated on how garbling protocols differentiate Coti v2 by facilitating transactions and smart contract executions where details remain private between involved parties. The Coti CEO emphasized the critical role of such privacy features in decentralized finance applications, where transaction confidentiality is as essential as transaction integrity. Coti claims that other platforms focusing solely on anonymity for privacy may face regulatory challenges and might not provide a compliant foundation for the broader ecosystem.Targeting specific use casesCoti envisions its protocol catering specifically to use cases demanding advanced privacy provisions in finance and healthcare. Currently designed for enterprises, Coti’s existing protocol enables the management of blockchain-based products such as custom-branded tokens, wallets, website integrations and fiat on-and-off ramps. In a blog post on Medium, the blockchain startup outlined that in addition to privacy, v2 will enable smart contracts, EVM compatibility and Solidity programming, alongside the features currently offered by v1. Notwithstanding these new features on the v2 product, the company confirmed to The Block that in respect of Coti’s original Cardano-based product, “Coti’s work with Cardano continues. We have a project built there called Djed, and that will continue to remain on Cardano.” Djed is an ADA-backed stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. The anticipated release of Coti v2’s developer net in the second quarter of 2024 signals a move towards realizing the potential in advancing Ethereum’s privacy standards. As a layer-1 protocol, Coti presently contributes to Web3 applications by providing digital infrastructure, including tools for wallets, tokens and payment modules, with a total value locked of $31 million. The upcoming integration as a privacy-centric layer-2 positions Coti as a key player in enhancing Ethereum’s capabilities and fostering a more secure and confidential blockchain experience.

Japan’s SMFG expresses interest in stablecoin launch

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG), a leading Japanese multinational financial services corporation and holding company, has outlined plans to launch a stablecoin.Photo by JJ Ying on UnsplashIn a press release published on its website on April 2, the company outlined details of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) it has signed with a view towards initiating discussions on the commercial use of stablecoins. Among the parties that have signed the MOU is Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), Japan’s second-largest bank and a core unit of SMFG’s overall business. Other parties include local IT firm TIS, Inc., digital asset infrastructure firm Fireblocks and Ava Labs, the creator and developer behind the Avalanche layer-1 blockchain. Developing a framework for stablecoin issuanceThe agreement will see these stakeholders collaborate in an effort “to develop a framework for stablecoin issuance and circulation, including exploring key technical, regulatory, and market infrastructure requirements both in Japan and further afield.” The initiative will seek to examine a number of stablecoin use cases that SMFG believes can best leverage the characteristics of stablecoins. These include “a settlement method for tokenized financial and real-world assets (RWAs), such as government and corporate bonds, as well as real estate.” The company acknowledged that the tokenization of RWAs has been growing rapidly, with stablecoins emerging as an important settlement tool. It also acknowledged their growing use in the areas of international remittances, corporate payments and small-value, high-frequency transactions. SMBC sees potential in the use of stablecoins to reduce reliance on intermediaries where cross-border payments are concerned, improving upon traditional finance which relies on use of the SWIFT financial messaging network. It has identified savings that can be made in terms of the time taken to effect cross-border transactions and associated costs. According to a report published by Japanese financial news outlet Nikkei on April 1, Ava Labs is expected to use its know-how in order to construct the foundational basis for the stablecoin.  Meanwhile, Fireblocks will be responsible for the development of a management system for any stablecoin token that is subsequently issued as a consequence of the initiative. It will also get involved with the development of system security in relation to the project. The bank will work with TIS to support the developmental phase of the project. While the initiative is currently at the planning stage, trials are scheduled to begin during the second half of this year.If all goes to plan and work proceeds as per the schedule that has been established, a stablecoin could potentially be issued as a consequence sometime in 2026. It’s not the first time that SMBC has delved into consideration of stablecoins. Last September, it joined with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) and Mizuho to launch Project Pax, a cross-border stablecoin transfer platform. That initiative relies upon Progmat, a distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform founded by MUFG for the purpose of tokenization and the issuance of stablecoins. Japanese legislators have been working towards adding an amendment to the Payment Services Act, with some changes proposed relative to stablecoins. The changes would permit greater diversity in terms of stablecoin reserves.
