Blockchain Meat Marketplace MOOxMOO Achieves $30m in Distribution Volume

MOOxMOO, the blockchain-based meat marketplace platform operated by South Korea’s Life In Commerce, has surpassed a cumulative distribution volume of KRW 40 billion (approximately $30 million) since its launch in February of last year.

Revolutionizing the meat industry

Life In Commerce attributed this significant achievement to the use of blockchain technology on the platform. By leveraging smart contract and soulbound token (SBT) technology, MOOxMOO provides a supply and transactional platform that streamlines business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions among participants of local meat supply chains, volume retailers, and retail customers.

The platform essentially embeds wholesale and retail transaction information into smart contracts, which are impossible to tamper with once minted into immutable and non-transferrable SBTs.

This makes MOOxMOO a transparent and decentralized distribution platform that offers various benefits like increased liquidity, faster transaction settlement times, and boosted security. It also addresses the issue of price deviations caused by market practices.

In addition, MOOxMOO has its own utility token, MOOX, that can be used for deposits and transactions.

The platform’s application of blockchain technology has revolutionized the meat distribution industry by breaking away from common problems such as unfair pricing. As a result, it has not only enhanced price competitiveness but also built a reputation for trustworthiness among consumers.

 

Future plans

Life In Commerce has ambitious plans to enhance the platform further. They are currently developing a new B2B platform that will utilize the weight of transaction credits using SBT in the trade of raw materials required for meat processing and distribution. This will offer additional benefits to suppliers and buyers.

South Korea sanctions North Korean tech workers for cybercrimes and crypto theft

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on Dec. 26 through an official website press release that it has imposed sanctions on 15 North Korean individuals and one institution for their involvement in illegal cyber activities, including cryptocurrency theft, to fund the country's nuclear and missile programs.Photo by Micha Brändli on UnsplashAccording to the MOFA, the sanctioned individuals have been stationed overseas as part of the 313 General Bureau of the North Korean Munitions Industry Department (MID), which is already subject to UN Security Council sanctions. The bureau is allegedly responsible for deploying North Korean tech personnel abroad and using the foreign currency earned to finance the development of nuclear weapons and missiles. The sanctions, which will come into effect at 15:00 UTC on Dec. 29, will prohibit financial and foreign exchange transactions with the designated entities unless approved in advance by South Korean authorities. Violations of these sanctions may result in legal consequences under South Korean law. North Korea behind 61% of 2024’s stolen cryptoThe MOFA cited a recent report by blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, which showed that North Korean crypto hackers took roughly $1.34 billion in 47 separate incidents in 2024. These thefts account for 61% of the year's total stolen crypto funds and 20% of all incidents. In 2023, they had stolen approximately $660.5 million over 20 incidents. It's believed these funds help finance North Korea's weapons of mass destruction programs. The ministry further stated that North Korean tech personnel are often dispatched to countries such as China, Russia and nations in Southeast Asia and Africa, where they disguise their identities and secure work from global tech companies. Some of these individuals are also suspected of engaging in information theft and cyber attacks. Emphasizing the threat these activities pose to cybersecurity and international peace, South Korea has vowed to continue its efforts to thwart North Korea's illicit cyber activities in cooperation with the international community.

This year, the total value locked in the liquid staking derivatives market has surged past the $22 billion mark. Correspondingly, the market capitalization of LSD projects has skyrocketed to $18 billion, indicating a substantial influx of interest and investment.However, the growth that these protocols are witnessing also presents a dual-edged conundrum for the Ethereum ecosystem. HashKey Capital’s report underscores that despite the advantages these protocols might offer their respective communities and token-holders, they could potentially destabilize the Ethereum ecosystem in multifaceted ways.Centralization riskAs evident in HashKey Capital’s overview, several LSD protocols heavily rely on a limited number of node operators, effectively centralizing a significant portion of validator nodes. This centralization trend, as highlighted by the report, is a cause for concern. The concentration of node operators raises red flags, as it contradicts the fundamental tenets of decentralization that underpin blockchain technology.The report articulates the adverse effects of centralization in the realm of liquid staking. It points to the dangers of reduced competition and a heightened risk of censorship.The report raises an important caution: “There is a heightened possibility of censorship with centralized staking players, as they may be subject to incentives or regulatory pressure to censor transactions. This can potentially result in a disruption of the trust within the network.”Security threatsCentralization also ushers in security threats. The dominance of major staking players makes the Ethereum ecosystem more susceptible to 51% attacks. Furthermore, the potential for collusion among centralized stakers looms large, leading to actions that counteract the very essence of decentralization, such as front running and malicious maximal extractable value (MEV) susceptibility.However, amidst these centralization risks, HashKey Capital acknowledges that most protocols are in their nascent stages. Many of them have devised strategies to incorporate distributed validator technology into their protocols, a proactive step towards fostering greater decentralization and resilience.HashKey Exchange awarded retail services licenseIn an unrelated development, HashKey Exchange received approval on Wednesday to upgrade type 1 and type 7 licenses, allowing it to cater to retail investors in Hong Kong. This accomplishment comes a mere two months after the city introduced its Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) licensing framework on June 1.In this evolving landscape, HashKey Capital and OSL were among the pioneer licensed exchanges under the city’s earlier voluntary program. Further Trials Required Before Determination of eHKD Launch DateThe Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) is taking a cautious approach to the launch of its retail central bank digital currency (CBDC), the e-HKD, stating that it will only go live once key stakeholders have gained sufficient experience to compete effectively in the payment sector.Photo by Jimmy Chan on PexelsAwaiting greater clarityIn an interview with the South China Morning Post (SCMP) earlier this week, Eddie Yue, CEO of the HKMA, revealed that initial experiments with e-HKD have shown promise, but the central bank is still waiting for greater clarity on technological, legal, and societal aspects. The CBDC trial began in May, involving 16 commercial banks, payment providers, and gross settlement platform Ripple, with a focus on exploring various use cases.Yue emphasized that they are still in the early stages of the trial process. The central question remains finding a use case that outperforms current retail payment methods in terms of safety, speed, or convenience.Programmable paymentsAmong the use cases explored in the pilot, programmable payments have stood out. This functionality allows consumer funds to be restricted for specific purposes. Bank of China (Hong Kong) has been at the forefront of this study, allowing select users to make payments using the test CBDC.The potential applications of the CBDC extend to tokenized deposits and tokenized assets, the aspect of the project which Ripple has involved itself with. The HKMA has shown interest in tokenization, especially after the successful completion of Project Evergreen, a blockchain-based bond issuance project.While the domestic use of the CBDC faces challenges, the HKMA is actively considering its role in cross-border payments. The HKMA has been involved in the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) mBridge pilot, which is expected to release a minimum viable product (MVP) by 2024. It’s working alongside the Bank of Thailand and the central bank of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on that project. Hong Kong and the UAE have been working towards strengthening financial cooperation in respect of crypto regulation.Following the achievements of the initial pilot, the HKMA is open to bringing in new participants. Rumors suggest that up to 20 central banks are closely monitoring the project’s developments.Collaboration with mainland ChinaRecent weeks have seen Hong Kong and China working on improving cross-border transactions. In July, it was announced that Chinese tourists visiting Hong Kong would be able to use their digital yuan wallets to pay for goods and services at select locations.Conversely, Hong Kong tourists visiting mainland China could use the digital yuan for retail transactions. A new upgrade will enable tourists to top up their digital yuan wallets using Hong Kong’s Faster Payment System (FPS) or major payment providers like Mastercard and Visa.While the exact launch date for e-HKD remains uncertain, the focus on practical use cases and technological advancements is expected to yield a robust and innovative CBDC for Hong Kong’s future. On the international front, the mBridge project is set to play a pivotal role in the broader adoption of CBDCs across borders, potentially revolutionizing global payment systems.
