eToro global expansion

In eToro’s case, the Financial Services Permission (FSP) license empowers it to operate as a broker in securities, derivatives and crypto assets within the UAE. The firm announced its regulatory success on Monday, the first day of Abu Dhabi Finance Week.

eToro’s foray into the UAE market is part of its broader global expansion plan. With an eye on the potential of the UAE’s investor base, eToro seeks to extend its business beyond just providing trading opportunities. The company is committed to fostering financial education and encouraging community engagement among its users in the region.

The latest issuance of a full license by the ADGM is the culmination of an initial in-principle authorization obtained over a year ago, showcasing a deliberate approach to regulatory compliance. eToro Founder and CEO Yoni Assia commented on the development in a press release, stating:

“The approval of our operating license by ADGM is a key milestone in our continued global expansion. Abu Dhabi is increasingly recognized as a growing fintech hub, and we are excited to become part of this flourishing ecosystem.”

M2 primed to onboard retail and institutional clients

Simultaneously, cryptocurrency exchange M2 has also been recognized by the ADGM, earning the status of a fully regulated Multilateral Trading Facility and custodian. M2 is now permitted by this license to serve both retail and institutional clients in the UAE, offering services such as crypto custody, UAE dirham-based Bitcoin and Ethereum trading and on/off-ramp services for the dirham (AED).

Stefan Kimmel, CEO of M2, considers the timing of this license as particularly advantageous, coinciding with a renewed positive sentiment among investors. M2’s range of services in the UAE market is designed for diverse client groups, addressing the needs of both retail and institutional investors.

Official platform launch

In rolling out its service offering in Abu Dhabi, the trading and custodial services platform has partnered with Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB). Commencing this week, both retail and institutional clients within the UAE can now register on the M2 platform.

The firm will offer custody and trading of digital assets while also extending yield-bearing products of up to 10.5% on BTC and ETH.

The strategic geographical location, business-friendly environment and forward-thinking regulatory approach make the UAE an attractive destination for international crypto players seeking operational licenses. Earlier this month, the ADGM’s registration authority introduced comprehensive regulations, particularly focusing on Web3 organizations. The regulatory framework has focused in particular on distributed ledger technology (DLT)-oriented foundations and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).

The successful acquisition of ADGM licenses by eToro and M2 marks a significant milestone for both entities. As these platforms introduce their innovative services to the region, the UAE is poised to play a central role in shaping the future of cryptocurrency.

Metaplanet targeting 21K Bitcoin by 2026

Earlier this month Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company, said that it was targeting 10,000 Bitcoin in 2025 but the company has raised the bar once again, planning on an acquisition of 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026. On Jan. 5, Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich set out a number of objectives for 2025. Among them was a goal for the company to acquire 10,000 Bitcoin in 2025. Gerovich explained that the firm intended to utilize “the most accretive capital market tools available” in order for Metaplanet to meet that target.Photo by André François McKenzie on Unsplash2025-2026 Bitcoin PlanAbout three weeks after the Metaplanet CEO announced that ambition, the company published a press release on Jan. 28 detailing its 2025-2026 Bitcoin Plan, which goes much further.  The plan outlines that 10,000 Bitcoin remains the target for 2025 but that the company has adopted the strategy to accumulate 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026. Gerovich stated that since Metaplanet embraced the Bitcoin Standard on April 8, 2024, the company has experienced exponential growth. Gerovich added: “The market has recognized Metaplanet as Tokyo’s preeminent Bitcoin company, and we are seizing this momentum to solidify our position as a global leader. Our vision is to lead the Bitcoin renaissance in Japan and emerge as one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders globally. This plan is our commitment to that future.” Adopting MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin playbookMetaplanet has adopted the Bitcoin playbook first pioneered by U.S. business intelligence company turned Bitcoin development firm MicroStrategy. In short, that playbook involves financing Bitcoin purchases with debt. In this way, the company can capitalize on Bitcoin’s historical trend of positive returns over time, using convertible notes and equity to facilitate that.  The practice also creates a feedback loop in so far as MicroStrategy buys Bitcoin, resulting in the Bitcoin unit price increases. The MicroStrategy stock price goes up. Demand for MicroStrategy’s stock and debt goes up, enabling the company to buy more Bitcoin. In its press release, Metaplanet looked back on what had been achieved in terms of its Bitcoin strategy in 2024. In Q4 2024, the company achieved a Bitcoin yield of 309.82%, following on from a 41.7% Bitcoin yield in Q3.  At the close of the year, the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company held 1,761 Bitcoin, purchased at an average Bitcoin unit price of 11.85 million yen ($76,411). Shareholder growth has seen the company surpass 50,000 shareholders. Meanwhile, share trading volume has increased 430x, year-on-year. Since the firm adopted the Bitcoin Standard in April 2024, the company’s market capitalization has grown by 7,000%. Last month, the company celebrated the milestone of having reached a $1 billion market cap. Asia’s largest equity capital raise for BitcoinThe company has dubbed its new plan “The 21 Million Plan.” It will comprise the issuance of 21 million shares by means of moving strike warrants. Gerovich confirmed on X that at $750 million, the plan will involve Asia’s largest-ever public equity capital raise to buy Bitcoin.

Binance Expands Crypto Offering in Dubai with New License

Binance Expands Crypto Offering in Dubai with New LicenseDubai has welcomed one of the biggest players in the crypto sector, Binance, with the Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority (VARA) awarding the firm a new trading license.Photo by Petar Avramoski on UnsplashServing qualified investorsAccording to an announcement made by the company on Monday, Binance’s Dubai-based subsidiary, Binance FZE, has secured the operational Minimum Viable Product (MVP) license from VARA.Eligible investors in Dubai, deemed as “qualified retail clients,” will now have access to authorized services such as compliant crypto-to-fiat exchanges, adhering to the guidelines set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). To qualify, investors must meet specific criteria, including being at least 21 years old and possessing a minimum of 500,000 United Arab Emirates dirhams ($136,000) in net liquid assets, supported by relevant documentary proof like bank statements and proof of funds.Additionally, qualified investors are required to provide valid identification documents, including passports and visas, along with proof of a valid UAE address and contact details. This comprehensive verification process ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and enhances security measures for all parties involved.Expanded service offeringThe move is a significant development as it allows Binance to offer cryptocurrency exchange and virtual asset broker-dealer services to institutional and qualified retail investors in Dubai. With the new license, Binance’s Dubai entity can now offer crypto-to-fiat exchange, conversions, transfer and custody solutions, brokerage facilities, as well as virtual asset payments and remittance services. The development builds upon Binance’s previous progress, having received the provisional MVP license in March 2022, followed by the preparatory MVP license in September 2022.Licensing challengesIt’s worth noting that some crypto exchanges have faced challenges operating with preparatory MVP licenses due to limited capabilities, only serving a restricted set of accredited investors. Bybit CEO Ben Zhou had previously highlighted this concern. That said, Zhou still came to the conclusion recently that the regulatory approach in the UAE is superior by comparison with many other jurisdictions. The news of Binance’s successful licensing comes shortly after VARA suspended the operational license of another crypto exchange, BitOasis, for not meeting required conditions within the set timeframes. BitOasis assured its commitment to fulfilling the remaining conditions in collaboration with VARA.In April 2023, VARA sought additional information from Binance, aiming to tighten regulatory standards in the emirate. Binance promptly provided all requested information and looked forward to further collaboration with VARA as it prepared for the next phase of licensing.Compliance with VARA’s framework includes adherence to compulsory rulebooks related to general operations, compliance, and market conduct requirements. The regulator has published key highlights of the regulations in 2023, underscoring its efforts to create a robust and well-regulated crypto market in Dubai.Regulatory headwindsBinance’s latest regulatory achievement indicates the exchange’s dedication to expanding its services and offerings in the region. It could potentially lead to something even more significant for the company in the Middle East as Binance has suggested that it would be more likely to expand in places such as Dubai, given an adverse regulatory approach elsewhere.Over the course of the past three months, the company has been forced out of key markets such as Germany, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Cyprus, due to regulatory pushback.
